"One" vs. "American Girl" - One of my favorite Petty songs vs. one of my favorite songs period: U2

"New Year’s Day " vs. “A Thing About You,” - A Thing About You is catchy, but this is a bad matchup: U2

"I Will Follow" vs. "Listen to Her Heart" - Sorry Tom: U2

"Where the Streets Have No Name" vs. "Don't Come Around Here No More" - Please. U2

"Vertigo" vs. "Here Comes My Girl" - Hopefully Vertigo gets the youth vote. But not here. Petty

"The Unforgettable Fire" vs. ""The Waiting" - Underrated U2 against possibly overplayed Petty. Let's call it a push. Tie

"Walk On" vs. “You Got Lucky” - Petty does not get lucky in this matchup: U2

"The Fly" vs. "Don't Do Me Like That" - A vastly underappreciated U2 song featuring some of The Edge's finest guitar work. I never really liked this Petty song: U2

"Bad" vs. "Breakdown (Live)" - I'm not as big a fan of Bad as others. This one goes to Petty. Petty

"Sunday Bloody Sunday" vs. "Refugee" The anthems for both bands. I give the edge (no pun intended) to the passion that prims from U2. But it is close. U2

Final tally: U2 7.5 - Tom Petty 2.5

"The Fly" vs. "The Nightwatchman" would have made a good matchup here...

...or in PiazzaFan's wrestling thread.

"A Thing About You" and "You Got Lucky" were clamouring to come off the bench for me, but they're not taking advantage of their opportunity.

"One" vs. "American Girl"
“One” looks destined for, at worst, a top 3 finish in the greatest “one songs” of all time tournament also going on here presently, and perhaps, the prestigious overall championship. That said, I’d rather have experienced American Girl and not One than the other way around. Opening-round goes to TP&H.

"New Year’s Day" vs. “A Thing About You”
I lobbied and lobbied for “Thing” in prior matchups, I just love it and think it’s a great example of Edgy’s insistence that this is a band competition … only to have it draw the song that prolly turned U2 into a phenomenon. Tough one, pitting the serious against the whimsical. Ah, hell. Another narrow victory for TP&H.

"I Will Follow" vs. "Listen to Her Heart"
Maybe IWF turned U2 into a phenomenon. I dunno anymore. I’'ll give it to U2. 2-1

"Where the Streets Have No Name" vs. "Don't Come Around Here No More"
“Don’t come around here where the streets have no name.” You’ll get lost. I’m scoring this one in the TP category due to a more creative video and less overexposure. 3-1.

"Vertigo" vs. "Here Comes My Girl"
I’m not all fruity for U2 like a lot of folks here, but Vertigo is the first U2 single in a long while that made me stand up and take notice of them. Great stuff: Powerful & exciting like it useta be. HCMG is OK, not sure I like the spoken-word verses. 3-2.

"The Unforgettable Fire" vs. ""The Waiting"
Unforgettable? Uh… had to listen a sample just to remember it. The Waiting’s not my favorite Petty selection on this list, but it’s taking him toward a stunning upset. It’s 4-2

"Walk On" vs. “You Got Lucky”
I penalized TP for speaking the verse earlier, same should apply here. Holy crap, TP has clinched a tie. 5-2

"The Fly" vs. "Don't Do Me Like That"
I think it’s OK that U2 tried to reinvent itself but the whole mid-late 90s thing was just aight for me, dog. Fans here are wondering why U2’s manager went for the electronic vote over the soul vote (Soul vote!). Game over, man! 6-2

"Bad" vs. "Breakdown (Live)"

"Sunday Bloody Sunday" vs. "Refugee"
U2 takes the final 2 in this matchup, but your final is 6-4 in favor in favor of the winner, and upset champion, Tom Petty & his Heartbreakers.

"You Got Lucky" isn't spoken on the verses so much as "Here Comes My Girl" and "Refugee," but it's nice to win on one judge's card.

Yes. The comment referred to "Walk On"'s spoken verse, like "Here Comes My Girl" not 'You Got Lucky.'

TP deserved this win.

Round 1
"One" vs. "American Girl"

Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers. So damn romantic. "One" doesn't... I don't know. There's just something more I'm looking for from that one.
Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers. 1, =red]U2 0

Round 2
"New Year’s Day " vs. “A Thing About You”
=red]U2.
Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers. 1, =red]U2 1

Round 3
"I Will Follow" vs. "Listen to Her Heart"
=red]U2. It's the glass sounds, among other things. Go Steve Lillywhite, go!.
Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers. 1, =red]U2 2

Round 4
"Where the Streets Have No Name" vs. "Don't Come Around Here No More"
=red]U2/ You'll find me leaning toward uptempo tracks.
Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers. 1, =red]U2 3
Round 5

"Vertigo" vs. "Here Comes My Girl"
Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers.
Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers. 2, =red]U2 3
Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers. "Vertigo" is wonderful thing to hear coming out of your radio. Ms. Edgy once heard it on a road trip and asked if we could pull over and buy the album. But it also hits me as really contrived to be a wonderful thing to hear coming out of your radio, where "Here Comes My Girl" is pure (although my girl never liked it so much, none of them did). Close.

Round 6
"The Unforgettable Fire" vs. ""The Waiting"
Too close to call "Fire is the soundtrack of my heart opening to love being stronger than death. "The Waiting" is the soundtrack to a great first kiss I had.
Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers. 2 1/2 =red]U2 3 1/2

Round 7
"Walk On" vs. “You Got Lucky”
I like the guitar sound of "Walk On" (duh, like what U2 songs does that not apply to) but the melody seems to sound like the Pixies. Neither of these songs seems to arrive where they're going, and roll more than rock.=red]U2
Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers. 2 1/2 =red]U2 4 1/2

Round 8
"The Fly" vs. "Don't Do Me Like That"
Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers. It's all about Benmont's organ.
Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers. 3 1/2 =red]U2 4 1/2

Round 9
"Bad" vs. "Breakdown (Live)"
=red]U2. Bad inspired me to take out an ogre.
Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers. 3 1/2 =red]U2 5 1/2

Round 10
"Sunday Bloody Sunday" vs. "Refugee"
Tie. I can't hear "Sunday" anymore. "Refugee" still moves me, but the initial impact of "Sunday" shouldn't be forgotten.
Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers. 4 =red]U2 6

I guess her vote doesn't count, but Ms. Edgy went this way:

	U2	TP&tH
1 1
2 1
3 1
4 .5 .5
5 1
6 1
7 1
8 1
9 1
10 1

5 1/2 - 4 1/2

She didn't like Hahn's lineup either. Where, she asked, is the respect for the soul vote?

Yet [u:adb1fc26af]another[/u:adb1fc26af] Angel of Harlem reference?

I have a deep bench already, but maybe it's time to call Angel up from the minors.

I'm really thinking of switching my vote on round two to "A Thing About You" and turning in a deadlocked ballot.
