]The band plans to start working on new songs after returning from an upcoming tour in South America, he said.

And watch out Rolling Stones: U2 won't stop touring any time soon.

"We grew up on the road ... It's such an integral part of what we are. I don't think we could give up touring. I don't think we could do what the Beatles did, just pack it in."

Good news for us U2 fans. I look forward to taking my kids to see them play someday soon. Almost took my 8 year-old this time around.

Which brings up a question for the U2 fans in the 'Pool - How many times have you seen the boys live?

I've seen them 5 times

Wembley - Joshua Tree Tour
Madison Square Garden - Achtung Baby tour I think?
Yankee Stadium - Zoo TV
Giants Stadium - PopMart
Madison Square Garden - All That You Can't Leave Behind Tour

Who can beat me?

Joshua Tree at Giants Stadium, 1987.

Do you remember who opened?

Look who I'm asking - of course YOU remember.

Who opened?

When I saw them in '87 it was Lou Reed and The Pogues

I think I've seen them eight times.

First on the Unforgettable Fire tour in 85 at the Meadowlands. Lone Justice was the opening act.

I saw them twice on the Joshua Tree tour. May 1987 in Hartford, again Lone Justice opened. U2 started that show with Stand By Me. Good Times. Then again in Sept. 87 I saw them at the Garden. (note: it was at this point that I started ignoring opening acts) Interesting show b/c they played I Still Haven't FOund What I'm Looking For twice, one time with a gospel choir ( I believe that was for the tour video.)

Saw them twice on the Achtung Baby/Zoo TV tour. Once in Nassau Coliseum, once at Giants Stadium.

Once on the PopMart tour Memorial Day 1997 at Giants Stadium. Edge Sang Sweet Caroline during that one. Even more Good Times.

Once at the Garden for the Elevation tour.

Then last May, back at the Meadowlands, 20 years after I saw them first. Loved the rocking opening three songs: City of Blinding Lights, Vertigo, Elevation.

My favorite U2 songs done live in no particular order:
I Will Follow, New Year's Day, Sometimes You Can't Make it On Your Own, Where the Streets Have No Name, Elevation, Sunday Bloody Sunday.

Oh, and the 87 Hartford show? The first time I met my future wife. Really Good Times.

Litttle Steven opened. The shows leading up to the Giants Stadium show featured a curiosity called Steve Earle. He was attempting to straddle country and rock and couldn't catch a break with radio programmers from either genre. But he was climbing the college charts largely by virtue of the publicity he got by opening for U2. But curious fans were disappointed because he was plugging an album called Guitar Town and they were expecting him to be a virtuoso guitar hero or something. I was still curious and was disappointed he wasn't on the bill, but I was committed to enjoying Little Steven because I was a fan of the one-album band he put together before leaving the E Street Band: Men Without Women. But crowd on field at the Meadowlands --- despite being in Bruce Country --- weren't buying his Springsteen histrionics, anti-imperialist agenda, and bandana-and-trenchcoat-and-distorted-face style borrowed from Joe Walsh. Many spent most of the set heckling him loudly and holding up both arms with the finger.

Two crazy things happened to me that day. The first was a steroid-pumped meathead, who was ahead of me on the line getting in, and was looking to fight just about anybody who crossed his path. The juice must've also had his pheromones pumping because some chick he had met just that day was hanging all over him sucking face and making a nasty public display between threats to fight.

He naturally ended up close to me on the floor. His act continued into the show but most people backed off the muscular nutbag. Finally, well into U2's set, he found a taker and went at it, pummelling his opponent. As other concertgoers looked around to flag security, Bono's eyes locked onto mine from 40 feet away and he cried, "If I could, you know I would. If I could, I would..."

Before he said "...let it go," he let out one of those big Bonorific "Ehhhh" exhales, and that was all I needed. I could. Indeed, I could. I jumped on the gorilla's back with all my 159 pounds, headlocked him with my right arm, half-nelsoned him with my left, and took... him... down. He squirmed to turn on me, but I knew if I lessened my grip, it was curtains for Edgy, so for a long 30-80 seconds, Edgy held Magilla, squirming, twisting, and Bono provided the soundtrack...

This desperation!
Dislocation!
Separation!
Condemnation!
You'd think with the golem floored by a middleweight, the concert-goers would help a brother out by grabbing my detainees legs or arms to keep him from squirming ourt of his hold or pulling up the bloodied victim or something, but no, it was just me and him... and Bono.

Revelation!
In temptation!
ISOLATION!
DESOLATION!
Let it GO!!!!
Dude, Bono, I'm down with the whole "Surrender" thing, but no way was I letting up on Jose Canseco's massive neck until my limbs gave way. (He was going to have to break them off, and was trying to do just that.) Finally the dream police arrrived, and naturally, they tried to haul me off. Of course, my first order of business is to not let him go until there's enough of them to control him, so that makes me look more seriously the aggressor. But the "Bad" Samaritans standing by finally stepped in to point out that I was the innoncent, and the pummelled victim also took my part. (BONO WAS NO HELP AT ALL HERE.) And I was released.

I got down on one knee to catch my breath, and allow my firing pulse to retard. I was wide awake. Truly, I was not sleeping. But Bono was mocking me. After playing the angel who called out my better nature, and got me in a Danny Heep o' trouble, he was now singing a snippet of "Sympathy for the Devil."

"Pleased to MEETCHOO! Hope you guess my NAME!" he sang as the band still played "Bad." Jerkface. Bono and his stupid spiritual dichotomy.

I'll tell you the other thing that happened later. Thanks to the miracle of the internet, I just found the setlist for that night. They even describe his "Sympathy for the Devil" snippet as a "snippet."

Once when they were part of that Amnesty International Tour at Giants Stadium. They did "Maggie's Farm." Opening acts included the Police, Miles Davis with Carlos Santana, Yoko Ono, Lou Reed, Joan Baez. Tried to get tix to their last shows since my son is a fan but they sold out on me and I didn't go through alla the gyrations you need to go through to get tix. Mebbe next time.

Great story Edge.

The only thing I've got is that when I saw them in '87 at Wembley it was at Wembley and Bono had a broken arm and wore a cast for the show. English crowds are tough. We were on the floor in front of the stage and full glass bottles of beer were being tossed up and around from all over and cracking on people's noggins.

Then, whatever year it was that I first saw them at the Garden, I had my walkman on on the way home and while listening to 'Bad' I stepped on dead rat in front of Madison Square Park.
