What’s not fair? Being the only team in a 6 team division with a record under .500
What’s even less fair? Being 8-20 and playing in said division.
What’s the least fair? With that record, having to face a 17-9 team in their home park
What just plain blows? Facing Pedro Martinez and the Officially Rejuvenated Tom Glavine, and then moving on. “Let’s stop by New York and take a good, hard beating on our way from Chicago to Washington.”

Who’s hot? Ummmm…nobody really.
Over the last week, Chris Duffy (OF) is .313 but his OPS is only .764. Freddy Sanchez (3B) is .364 with an OPS of .819, but that’s only an 11 at-bat sample size in the same timeframe.

The Wilsons, Craig (36) and Jack, have been two of the top three hitters for the Pirates this year, with OPS's of .982 and .901. (Not pictured - Jason Bay: .437(!) OBP, .904 OPS)

Who’s not?
The rest of the team over the last week:
Jack Wilson (SS) - .238/.333/.429//.762
Jeromy Burnitz (OF) - .222/.263/.556//.819
Craig Wilson (1B) - .200/.304/.450//.754
Joe Randa (3B) - .222/.263/.222//.485 (yuk)
Jason Bay (OF) - .235/.458/.353//.811
Ronny Paulino (who?) (C) - .200/.294/.200//.494 – The paulino is the name of the little ball in bocce.

Who looks familiar?
Jeromy Burnitz and Jason Bay (sigh), of course.
Roberto Hernandez (0-1, 3.18, 11.1 innings, 12 H, 1 HR, 8 BB, 7K) is still going strong at age 41.
Correct me if I’m wrong, but it doesn’t look like anyone from the infamous Benson-Wigginton deal will participate in this series.

Zach Duke pitched Pittsburgh to an 8-0 win over the Cubs in their last game

Who’s pitching?
Ian Snell (1-2, 5.79) vs. Pedro Bear - 5/3/06, 7:10 pm – Ian has 11 career starts, 5 this year. After three awful starts, he’s calmed down somewhat. He went 6 innings against Houston on April 22nd and allowed 2 earned runs on 6 hits and 2 walks. His best start this year was his most recent: 7 innnings, 5 hits, 1 walk, 7 strikeouts, 1 earned run against the Phillies to get his first win of the year on April 28th.

Paul Maholm (1-3, 5.86) vs. Tom Glavine - 5/4/06, 7:10 pm – Maholm was the Pirates Minor League Pitcher of the Year in 2005. His best start of the year was also his most recent: 7 innnings, 6 hits, 2 walks, 4 strikeouts, 1 earned run against the Phillies. Other than that and a decent outing (6 IP, 2 ER, L) against St. Louis he’s had a pretty awful year, allowing 5 earned runs in each of his other three starts.

What’s the bottom line? A two game series...at home...our two best pitchers...two youngsters starting for the other team........and the other team stinks. Gotta take 'em both. Beat the bad teams.

BE THE REDS!
South Korea looks to make another run.

Ahn Jung-Hwan, national hero and the ruin of Italian soccer. He also has great hair.
Jimmy Connors didn't make it out of the second round in 1992. Villanova didn't make a dent in 1986. In 2006, South Korea will try to escape the fate of previous Cinderallas and prove that their run to the World Cup semifinals was no fluke.

History: Quite frankly, prior to 2002, there wasn’t much. South Korea made its first appearance in World Cup play in 1954. Winless in fourteen matches, South Korea had only four ties to show for their troubles. They are, however, responsible for producing the player widely regarded as the best Asian player of the 20th Century. Cha Bum-Kum spent over a decade in the German Bundesliga scoring 98 goals. The mark was a record for a foreign-born player.

World Cup 2002: As co-host with Japan, South Korea made its first mark in World Cup play in 2002 when it reached the semifinals before bowing out to Germany. South Korea’s improbable run included victories over heavily favored Italy and Spain. Ironically, the game-winner against Italy came from Ahn Jung-Hwan, who had spent the prior season playing in Italy. For his efforts, Ahn was dismissed by Italian Perugia owner Luciano Gaucci. Said Gaucci, “I am not going to pay the salary of a guy who has been the ruin of Italian soccer.”

Who’s who: Since his game-winner against Italy, Ahn has become a household name in South Korea, as much for his looks as his play. He is married to a former Miss Korea, and his face can be seen in an array of advertisements. Some critics have questioned Ahn's dedication, accusing the star of being more concerned with modeling than scoring goals. On the field, after his dismissal from the Italian team, he has played in Japan and in Germany.

South Korea’s best player is Park Ji-Sung, who plays with the Manchester United. Lee Young-Pyo, who plays with Tottenham, could also be an impact player. Korea will be missing Lee Dong-Gook, out with a torn cruciate ligament, meaning more pressure falls upon Park Chu-Young, the rising star of Korean soccer. Park has blazing speed, but at 20, may still be too young to handle the pressure the World Cup stage will provide.

Outlook: South Korea will be hard pressed to replicate the success they had in 2002 without the throngs of support they had from their home crowd. Still, without a powerhouse in Group G, the Koreans have a chance to advance from the group stage and into the tourney. How they fare there may depend on the matchup. But they are certainly dangerous enough to make their presence felt in this tournament.

Like their countryman, South Korea will look to steal one in Germany

Red Sox David Ortiz involved in sweets scandal.
FEDS RAID HOME OF SOX' ORTIZ

Discover stash of Hostess, Entenmann’s

By Centerfield
CPF SPORTS

Federal agents raided the home of Boston Red Sox slugger David Ortiz yesterday, seeking evidence that could identify him as a distributor and abuser of sweets and dessert cakes. Commercially manufactured desserts, which are undetectable in urine tests, have recently been added to the list of barred substances pursuant to the latest collective bargaining agreement.

Baseball officials refused to comment last night, it is believed that the agents discovered a large stash of Twinkies, Ho-Ho’s and Frosted Mini-Donuts. It is unclear whether the desserts were intended for Ortiz’ personal consumption, or for distribution to other players.

One agent, speaking on the condition of anonymity, said that the raid was the culmination of an ongoing investigation. “The federal government is not going to stand idly by and allow public figures such as Ortiz to corrupt our children. If baseball isn’t going to crack down and self-police, the government will make sure someone does.” The agent said that the sports world has made it far too acceptable to abuse dessert cakes and cookies. “The message that it sends is that it’s ok...and we can’t allow that to continue. Many of these athletes eat these desserts right out in the open, and oftentimes before dinner. The sugar in these products can be so damaging to a players’ teeth...and I don’t even want to think about they way these can spoil your appetite.”

It is unknown at this time, whether Ortiz dealt directly with manufacturers, or whether he was dealing with food distributors such as Sysco, or IFDA. “We will take down the entire network,” the agent promised. “It doesn’t end here.”

The raid concludes the investigation into Ortiz, but the fallout will probably be felt for months. It is believed that when Ortiz was first confronted by agents in April, according to documents, he named names. Though those names have not been released, names linked to these investigations include the Dodgers’ Olmedo Saenz, as well as Ortiz’s teammate David Wells.

Ortiz, who had been hitting .265 with 18 home runs, finished second in the American League MVP voting in 2005.

Monday, July 3 Purchase Tickets Shea Stadium | 7:10 PM ET
PIT Paul Maholm, LHP (2-7, 4.97)
Pirates (28-54) @ NYM Pedro Martinez, RHP (7-4, 3.45)
Mets (48-32)

Scouting Report:
Maholm took a three-hit shutout into the seventh inning against the Chicago White Sox last Wednesday before being touched up for four runs in a 4-3 Pirates loss. The rookie southpaw is winless in eight starts since defeating the Cincinnati Reds at PNC Park on May 16. Maholm allowed one run in six innings during his only previous career start against the Mets.

Martinez goes from pitching against the Red Sox to facing the Pirates. Emotions ought not be a problem Monday at Shea as they were at Fenway on Wednesday. Then again, he may have other issues. Martinez has won twice and the Mets have won four times in his last 11 starts. The team has won merely 26 of his 47 starts over two years.

Tuesday, July 4 Purchase Tickets Shea Stadium | 1:10 PM ET
PIT Zach Duke, LHP (5-7, 4.92)
Pirates (28-54) @ NYM Tom Glavine, LHP (11-2, 3.34)
Mets (48-32)

Scouting Report:
Duke allowed four runs in the first two innings against the Chicago White Sox on Thursday, but settled down to blank the defending world champs over his final four frames. The left-hander was in line for his first win since June 14 before the Bucs' bullpen blew a 6-4 lead in the eighth inning. Duke threw seven scoreless innings at Shea Stadium last season in his only career appearance against the Mets.

Glavine's streak -? the Mets had won his last 11 starts -? ended in Boston on Thursday. But it wasn't his doing. He pitched "Glavinely," but for only five innings. The pitch count beat him more than the Red Sox did. He still hasn't lost in 12 starts. And with Pedro Martinez not winning, Glavine once again is emerging as the No. 1 starter on a staff.

Wednesday, July 5 Purchase Tickets Shea Stadium | 7:10 PM ET
PIT Kip Wells, RHP (0-3, 15.19)
Pirates (28-54) @ NYM Orlando Hernandez, RHP (4-8, 5.55)
Mets (48-32)

Scouting Report:
Wells has been hit hard in each of his three starts this season since returning from surgery to alleviate a blood clot. The right-hander was charged with seven runs in 2 1/3 innings Friday night against the Detroit Tigers, and he's allowed 18 earned runs in just 10 2/3 innings this season. Wells is 2-2 with a 3.70 ERA in four career starts against the Mets.

El Duque has been remarkably inconsistent since joining the Mets, but there is no indication the Mets have any intent to replace him. But if they do recall Mike Pelfrey, Hernandez seemingly would be the starter displaced. He threw well enough the beat the Yankees on Friday night, but he was hammered by the Blue Jays in his previous start. Hernandez has lost three straight starts and is winless in his last four.

Thursday, July 6 Purchase Tickets Shea Stadium | 7:10 PM ET
PIT To be announced
Pirates (28-54) @ NYM To be announced
Mets (48-32)
