Re: IGT #87 7/10 Snakes? Why'd it have to be snakes?

Arizona at NY Mets
When: 7:10 PM ET, Friday, July 10, 2015
Where: Citi Field, New York City, New York
SportsDirect Inc.

After winning consecutive road series for the first time this season, the New York Mets look to head into the All-Star break on a high note when they open a three-game set against the visiting Arizona Diamondbacks on Friday. Strong pitching has paved the way for New York, which has allowed just four runs en route to winning three of its last four games.

While the recent surge has the Mets (44-42) within three games of first-place Washington in the National League East, the Diamondbacks (42-42) have won five of six to reach .500 for first time since April 24. "I think our expectations of ourselves are very high, and it's well above .500," said A.J. Pollock, who belted a three-run homer to highlight Arizona's 7-4 win over Texas on Wednesday. Pollock is doing his part, going 13-for-33 with eight RBIs and seven runs scored during his seven-game hitting streak. New York certainly could use more out of Lucas Duda, who is 2-for-29 in his last eight contests and batting .167 in 14 career games versus Diamondbacks' pitching.

TV: 7:10 p.m. ET, FSN Arizona, SNY (New York)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Diamondbacks RH Chase Anderson (4-2, 3.71 ERA) vs. Mets RH Noah Syndergaard (3-4, 3.38)

After allowing a lead-off homer to Charlie Blackmon, Anderson settled for a no-decision despite permitting just three runs on as many hits in six innings against Colorado on Friday. The 27-year-old pitched well in his lone career outing versus the Mets on June 6, yielding one run on eight hits in 5 2/3 frames to receive a no-decision. Anderson has struggled keeping the ball in the park of late, surrendering seven homers in his last three starts after allowing just three in his previous 13 turns this season.

Syndergaard saw his pitch count elevate and settled for a no-decision on Friday despite permitting just one run on two hits in six innings against the Los Angeles Dodgers. The 22-year-old will look to rebound at Citi Field, where he owns a 3-1 mark with a 1.89 ERA and 0.90 WHIP while allowing the opposition to bat .215 against him. Syndergaard has yielded one earned run or less in six of his 10 starts in his first major-league season.

WALK-OFFS:
1. New York 3B Eric Campbell went deep in the ninth inning in Wednesday’s victory at San Francisco, ending his team's homerless drought at nine games.
2. Arizona C Welington Castillo also went deep on Wednesday and improved to 6-for-16 during his four-game hitting streak.
3. Mired in a 4-for-40 slump, Mets OF Michael Cuddyer has missed two straight games and six of the team's last eight with a balky left knee.

Re: IGT #87 7/10 Snakes? Why'd it have to be snakes?

We faced Chase Anderson in the middle of the three game series out in the desert in early June. It was one of those games where we got one or more runners on in every inning (10 hits + 2 BBs + catcher's interference) but scored nothing save for a 2nd inning Juan Lagares HR; it, of course, was a solo. The Snakes then scored twice after 2-out/none-on in the 7th and we lost 2-1.
It takes a lot of talent to NOT score with all those dudes on base but 8 LOB-sters [u:u6xw2yvz]plus Four[/u:u6xw2yvz] GiDPs (including ones to end both the 8th & 9th innings) is a great help.
Larger point being, I don't think Mr. Anderson can pull off that kind of sleight-of-hand shit again so I think we owe him an ass-kicking.

Re: IGT #87 7/10 Snakes? Why'd it have to be snakes?

I went back and checked on those double plays.

GIDP: D Muno (1); J Mayberry (1); J Lagares (6); L Duda (6).

So, somehow that magic occurred without contributions from Campbell or Cuddyer, whom my eyeballs insist are our two greatest GiDP offenders. They in fact took a day off from their struggles that day, garnering two hits a piece.

So it wasn't a total ass-kicking, but it was at least a one-inning ass-kicking with a solid calf-whoopin' thrown in for good measure.

Re: IGT #87 7/10 Snakes? Why'd it have to be snakes?

Thoughts on the game:

I'm not sure, but Jeurys, though he seems athletic, may be the worst fielding Met pitcher I've ever seen. He's bad on grounders, he's bad throwing to bases, he doesn't cover well, and he's not great at holding runners on. Now he's whiffing on a popup.

We've nonethless seen a lot of defensive hustling the last week, and sharper defensive execution (Jeurys aside). It's nice to see that ninth inning and see a team out-brainfarting us.

Whitey Herzog once paid Lonnie Smith one of the strangest compliments — that he'd fallen down and muffed so many balls hit to him, that he became really good at keeping his head and recovering. I'm starting to feel that way about Daniel Murphy. He can even make the recovery for other people's errors. "I got this, Jeurys. I've BEEN there."

It's nice to go from the "Harvey's gotta save us" culture at the start of the year to Harvey suddenly being the third-best pitcher in the rotation — mostly in a good way.

I readily admit I don't know what to do with the offense. The Mets may have a yawn at every position, but the league is full of yawns right now and the Goldschmidts are hard to come by. Grinding our way through this until we discover a Goldschmidt of our own is painful going, but if that's what we have to do, that may be what we have to do. Great to see Duda and Cuddy grinding tonight.

Cubbies and Natties both lose and the Mets pull within two in both the division race and the Wild Card.

Re: IGT #87 7/10 Snakes? Why'd it have to be snakes?

Syndergaard now has 72 strikeouts in his first 11 career games...That total is fourth-highest in team history through 11 games

behind Dwight Gooden (87), Nolan Ryan (81) and Matt Harvey (80)...The 72 strikeouts through his first 11 games are also tied for the

17th-most strikeouts by any pitcher in the last 100 years...

PITCHING IN: New York pitching has allowed 21 earned runs in its last 133.0 IP (1.42 ERA)...Since Sunday, the Mets pitching staff has

allowed five earned runs in 44.0 IP (1.02 ERA) with eight walks and 48 strikeouts...The Mets entered today with the third-best ERA in

the majors behind St. Louis and Pittsburgh.

THE BULLPEN: The Mets’ pen has allowed seven earned runs in its last 15 games (36.0 innings) for an ERA of 1.75...Entering play

today, New York’s bullpen ranked fifth in the majors.

And who'd have thunk -- especially after our pitching staff's record-setting ineptness from a couple years back when they started the season, what was it?, like 0-fer-60-ish -- that Harvey would wind up as maybe the 4th best hitter on the staff? He's certainly behind deGrom and Syndergaard, no better than Niese, and likely just sample size away from being passed by Matz. Then toss on the fact that, for this season anyway, he's beneath Colon (which is not a good thing to be no matter how you wind up parsing that statement).
Back in his 2012 rookie season Harvey's hitting was a revelation to the point of being a novelty for this team. Since that first year however he's a sub-.100 hitter with a 45% K-rate who can't bunt on a staff full of guys who actually look like they know what they're doing even when they don't get hits.
