IGT 07/23 - Fred's Team at Mets

LA Dodgers at NY Mets
When: 7:10 PM ET, Thursday, July 23, 2015
Where: Citi Field, New York City, New York
SportsDirect Inc.

The New York Mets look to dust themselves off following a demoralizing defeat when they begin a 10-game homestand on Thursday with the opener of a four-game series versus the Los Angeles Dodgers. New York found itself four outs shy of moving within one game of National League East-leading Washington, only to see the bottom fall out with their fourth setback in six outings in a 4-3 loss to the Nationals on Wednesday afternoon.

The news doesn't get much better for the light-hitting Mets, who face three-time NL Cy Young Award winner and 2014 NL MVP Clayton Kershaw in the series opener. Ruben Tejada has collected five RBIs and five runs scored during his 10-game hitting streak and is 5-for-10 in his career against Kershaw. NL West-leading Los Angeles prevented its first three-game skid in over a month with a 3-1 triumph over Atlanta on Wednesday afternoon. The Dodgers are 3-3 on their 10-game road trip heading into their set at Citi Field.

TV: 7:10 p.m. ET, SNLA (Los Angeles), SNY (New York)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Dodgers LH Clayton Kershaw (7-6, 2.68 ERA) vs. Mets RH Bartolo Colon (9-8, 4.86)

Kershaw was simply masterful in his last outing, striking out 14 and scattering three singles over eight scoreless innings in a 4-2 victory over Washington. The 27-year-old has allowed just two earned runs and struck out 43 in his last four outings (31 innings) to move above .500 on the season. Kershaw owns a brilliant 5-0 mark with a 1.58 ERA in eight career starts versus New York, but settled for a no-decision despite yielding just one run on five hits in seven innings on July 3.

Colon suffered his fourth straight losing decision on Saturday after getting blitzed for seven runs on eight hits in 4 1/3 innings of a 12-2 setback to St. Louis. The 42-year-old Dominican certainly has cooled off after a hot start to the season, permitting 21 runs on 37 hits in the four losses (20 2/3 frames). Colon allowed two runs in six innings to win his last meeting with Los Angeles, but owns just a 2-4 mark with a 6.03 ERA against the Dodgers while allowing them to bat .313 against him.

WALK-OFFS:
1. Los Angeles' Brett Anderson irritated his left Achilles tendon in Tuesday's contest, prompting manager Don Mattingly to note that he is uncertain if the right-hander will make Sunday's start versus New York.
2. Mets OF Curtis Granderson is 10-for-31 with five runs scored during his seven-game hitting streak after going 1-for-16 in his previous five.
3. Dodgers SS Jimmy Rollins had an RBI double on Wednesday, but is still 1-for-19 in his last five contests.

Re: IGT 07/23 - Fred's Team at Mets

Bartolo had 8 wins at the end of May...it's strange to look up at his total now and only see 9.

The SNY booth was mentioning yesterday that he needs a good start today and that maybe having Recker back to catch will make the difference.

His 2015 splits with Recker catching (8 G, 52 IP, 3.63 ERA, 39 K, 5 BB) are much better than with everyone else (10 G, 57.1 IP, 5.97 ERA, 49K, 9 BB).

Colon gets an awful lot of credit for a guy with a 76 ERA+.

I didn't realize his ERA+ was that bad, but yeah, he hasn't been good this year. I figured he was getting a pass early on because of the wins, but now?

it's because, much like last year, he has more good starts than bad but the bad ones are quite the clunkers.

bad timing on the last one, because he's gotta be the obvious trade guy. Colon for Aramis Ramirez, Mets pay both salaries. Salary dump!

Re: IGT 07/23 - Fred's Team at Mets

This isn't a Colon problem specifically, but the fact that you can set your watch to his giving up 3 runs in 6 innings every time out there isn't a winning recipe for a team that isn't scoring a whole lot.

Kershaw v Colon is a mismatch.

Well, yeah, one's tall and slim and young, and the other ain't.

Team LeiterWagner will be attending (well, Dad and kid, anyhow), attired and warmed up for full-throat urging on behalf of Team ViejoGordito.

Re: IGT 07/23 - Fred's Team at Mets

Colon 2015 is a lot like Colon 2014, even if we can't agree on what he is. He's remarkable, if not remarkably good.

That walkless streak was the death of him. It's like he started getting tighter and tighter to sustain it, and then BAM! they turned on him.

Hey, look at that crazysocks lineup sharpie just posted. I wonder what our real lineup is going to look like.

Re: IGT 07/23 - Fred's Team at Mets

One thing we have learned is that Wilmer Flores can bat anywhere from 2nd to 8th and that Lucas Duda can bat anywhere from 3rd to 6th but Curtis Granderson may not be moved out of the leadoff spot as it will irreversibly mess up his game.

Holy crow. Is TC doing this to spite Sandy?

I read in today's NY Daily News (Harper) that the Mets front office does not want TC using Familia for any more than a 3 out save. Is there any truth to this or is Harper blowing smoke out his ass?

Duda with some brain freeze.
Best part of game so far was when Keith was talking about the
infield conditions being so good in this era and declared that heck
he might not even wear a cup nowadays (paraphrasing) and there
was like 12-15 seconds of dead air...

Any chance we had at coming back in the 9th is about to go out the window.
Gilmartin didn't exactly get smacked around but they all found holes like it was payback time for all those GiDPs earlier.

I'm working on my anger management, but I'd really like to
slap Mattingly in the head so hard that his glasses fly ten feet.

Wonder what Fred and Sandy (Koufax) had for dinner tonight.

Re: IGT 07/23 - Fred's Team at Mets

Not that it mattered, but when was the last time we had a half-swing call go our way?
That strike 3 on Grandy was pretty questionable.

And if you want to smack Mattingly do the same to the umps who overturned that HBP call. It may well have hit him but there's no way that the video evidence showed it.
As Ronnie said, that's not even remotely the type of call that peeps had in mind when they concocted the replay rule. But as I said, once you go down that path it's not so easy to keep those kinds of calls from being micromanaged.

Well at least we're not going to get Greinke tomorrow.

Re: IGT 07/23 - Fred's Team at Mets

Tonight's starting lineup had four players (ok, one was a pitcher) batting under .200.
I've seen better lineups on Law and Order.

I don't think I've ever intentionally listened to a Ramones song. I might have heard one playing , but didn't know it was them.

Its funny. I like listening to music of all kinds, and have 9 music stations pre-set on my car radio. (I rarely listen to music when home) The stations range from Oldies (1960's) to contemporary. But I don't recall them identifying the Ramones as the artist on the song I just heard or was about to hear.
(I'll let the age joke slide. :) )

Re: IGT 07/23 - Fred's Team at Mets

The problem is that the Ramones were never much of a radio band. That they weren't was more the fault of the radio industry than the band's, but that's a separate topic entirely.
Point being that unless you were one to actively seek out music beyond that which was a staple of mainstream programming and therefore your car pre-sets then it's entirely likely that you didn't hear a lot of Ramones over the years.

Re: IGT 07/23 - Fred's Team at Mets

The crowd was weirdly quiet for a 3/4-full house, especially once the boos subsided following the Rollins home run. YoungerPooper was moody and restive-- "I don't love you," she said at one point, "Because you're not cheering, and the Mets are losing, and you're not the way you normally are, and I don't like it." So was I, honestly. I think at some point, I actually found myself rooting for the no-hitter. 'Cause, y'know, with the lineup out there, and the at-bats these guys were taking, scoring a run was not going to happen.
