Eponymous Games
Centerfield Jul 07 2015 07:49 AM |
I joked last night that we had just watched "The Johnny Monell Game". Of course it won't end up being that. And it's likely that a few months from now few of us will remember last night's game clearly at all. Eponymous Games are interesting. Sometimes they are obscure players, sometimes they are superstars. Sometimes they are post-season thrillers, sometimes they are otherwise insignificant games in non-memorable seasons. I don't think there is any one particular criteria, but like the Supreme Court once said about porn, we know it when we see it.

How about "The (Hyphenated-Pair-of-Last-Names) (First-Name-Because-We-in-America-Can't-Get-with-Korean-Conventions-of-Family-Names-First) Game"? For I nominate "The Dae-Sung Koo Game."
|
Centerfield Jul 07 2015 07:59 AM Re: Eponymous Games |
Sure. We cannot leave off Mr. Koo.

RealityChuck Jul 07 2015 08:39 AM Re: Eponymous Games |
Do you mean Mets games named for an opposing player? Because that gives you the Rick Ankiel Game.
|
Edgy MD Jul 07 2015 08:49 AM Re: Eponymous Games |
There are plenty of games where Dave Kingman did something remarkable, but I tend to think of the one where he made Tommy LaSorda go nuts as "The Kingman Game."
|
Gwreck Jul 07 2015 08:56 AM Re: Eponymous Games |
The ground rules (above) limited this to games named after Mets, not opposing players or Hall-of-Fame Rock acts.

Little known fact: After John Buck's big power surge in April 2013 fizzled out, he was replaced by his brother Peter for the rest of the season.

For this one, I am hoping that very soon we will be able to say "Which one? There are so many?"

I'm too lazy to look this up right now, but was Kingman with the Mets or the Cubs for that one?
|
Edgy MD Jul 07 2015 11:34 AM Re: Eponymous Games |
You got me, that was 1978. Kingman's best year.
|
d'Kong76 Jul 07 2015 11:35 AM Re: Eponymous Games |
I don't know if he went nuts twice, but here's the most googly... so, Cubs...
|
Centerfield Jul 07 2015 12:15 PM Re: Eponymous Games |
Game 6 of the '99 NLCS might have been an Eponymous Game if not for an interesting twist. If Todd Pratt had kept running it might have been The Robin Ventura Game. Instead it's called the Grand Slam Single.

The Johan Santana game was game 161 of 2008.

Edgy MD Jul 07 2015 12:24 PM Re: Eponymous Games |
The Akeel Morris Game. Not much dispute about which one that is.
|
Gwreck Jul 07 2015 02:00 PM Re: Eponymous Games |

Until the no-hitter happened. At that point, there was no longer one "Johan Santana Game." Hence he wouldn't be eligible for the list.

The Esix Snead game. Pretty much his entire career right there.

MFS62 Jul 07 2015 03:26 PM Re: Eponymous Games |
If its the same game mentioned before, I remember the Victor Diaz game as the Craig Brazell game. He hit his only major league homer in the same game, and it was the game winner in extra innings.

Wait... the Mets only used one pitcher? In a nine-inning game???
|
John Cougar Lunchbucket Jul 16 2015 11:59 AM Re: Eponymous Games |
35 batters faced, 8 K's, 3 walks, 7 hits. 150 pitches easily, right?
|
Benjamin Grimm Jul 16 2015 12:20 PM Re: Eponymous Games |
Matlack led off the bottom of the 8th in a tie game. Wasn't removed for a pinch-hitter.

The Wilmer Flores game.

Fman99 Jul 29 2015 08:54 PM Re: Eponymous Games |

I was there. It was Fboy's very first Mets game attended in person and his only trip to Shea. Unlike every other Mets game I attended, none of which will ever be named after anyone. The possible exception being 'The Victor Zambrano game,' his last ever MLB appearance in which he ran off of the mound after an inning or two with an arm/elbow injury, never to return.
|
Fman99 Jul 31 2015 09:18 PM Re: Eponymous Games |
Ahem was this The Wilmer Flores game?
|
Edgy MD Jul 31 2015 09:23 PM Re: Eponymous Games |

If so, it deletes the Wilmer Game of two days ago.
|
Valadius Jul 31 2015 09:25 PM Re: Eponymous Games |
I look at it as Part I and Part II.
|
Zvon Jul 31 2015 09:32 PM Re: Eponymous Games |
Lets be generous and go with The Wilmer Week. We can count the next two wins as part of it.

Mets – Willets Point Aug 02 2015 09:36 PM Re: Eponymous Games |
Is that the one in Tokyo, or the one in the NLDS against the Giants? Or the one where he gave a ball to a fan with two outs? I was at the latter one.
