Conforto Clock

Heyman is reporting the Mets have not ruled out promoting Conforto, and while I'm certainly willing to wait until his promotion is self-justifying — rather than justified by the state of the team — I imagine it would be a big wet blanket on team morale, to say nothing of fan morale, if Cuddyer hit the DL followed by news that Darrell Ceciliani was en route. Sorry, No-Gloves-Guy, you know it's true. (Doesn't mean it won't happen.) But Heyman's report sort of changes the conversation from an if to a when, suggesting a callup is inevitable, and perhaps likely before the roster expansion. So, just as with Matz, give me a when — the date of the Conforto MLB World Premier. An honest-to-goodness date, man, not a window. The kid had no trouble with big league pitching in Spring Training. Can't wait to see what his first taste of the Major Leagues is like.

Can't wait to read the cynical articles from moron writers about how the Mets should have traded for Troy Tulowitzki, Joey Votto, & Babe Ruth but without giving up any of their prospects and how instead of doing so they are trying to hide their failures from the fans by bringing up Conforto.

If the Mets hadn't used him in a sub role a few nights ago, they could have post- dated Cuddyer's DL stint and called up Conforto almost two weeks ago. I guess what I'm saying is if the Mets had wanted to bring up Conforto, they could have done it by now. Later

The bruise isn't going to heal in that time anyway. Pretending Cuddyer is going to play might be a bluff from Alderson to not seem as desperate for an outfielder too.

Regardless, I think everyone knows the Mets are desperate for some offense... outfield or wherever. Kind of a fucked up situation.

Klapisch seems certain that Cuddyer will eventually be DL'd and that Conforto will replace him when that happens. Does he quote anyone or is he just rambling again? Also either he can help the team or he can't. helping the team means having to play against guys like Kershaw. If you need to ease him in against rookies and weak starters, there's a place for that, and it's called AAA.

I got a notion last night that if the Mets are going to do this, maybe they should call up Tajeiron as well, and start them off as a platoon, taking some of the pressure off of any one of them.

If he doesn't hit, but the end of the Nats series. If he does hit, the criticism will be they should've done it earlier. If he doesn't hit, it's because of Kevin Long. if he doesn't hit, it's on Sandy for not having drafted better options. if he hits sorta 'meh'ish, it'll be on Collins for not playing him more. if he hits sorta 'meh'ish, it'll be on the Mets for throwing him into the fire and expecting him to be a savior. Some of the complaints probably hinge on what else happens this week.

Tonight's pitcher Ian Thomas is left handed, so I'm guessing Conforto could be used as a pinch hitter later in the game. Hard to see him debuting in the starting lineup against a lefty. OE: His small sample size against lefties at AA are not bad at all, though.

Scouting report from BA: At a strong 6-foot-1 and 211 pounds, Conforto’s power-and-patience approach is what drew the Mets to make him the 10th overall pick out of Oregon State. He has a powerful lefthanded stroke and above average bat speed that allows him to drive balls all over the field with authority. Conforto has an advanced and patient approach with a career .382 OBP in the minors that fits the philosophy that general manager Sandy Alderson and his staff covet. He’s shown the ability to be selective at the plate, rare for someone his age and with his brief amount of pro experience—just 133 minor league games. Conforto’s swing can get long, leaving him vulnerable to plus velocity inside, but he worked extensively with hitting coach Benny Distefano in Brooklyn last season to improve on this area of his game, focusing mainly on his hand position and weight transfer to help him attack balls on the inner half. Defensively, Conforto has earned some praise for the strides he has made in the outfield this season. He is still solely a left fielder, with average range and arm strength, although he’s shown an ability to gun down runners as he did in the Futures Game earlier this month in Cincinnati. As he’s shown in his brief minor league career, it’s Conforto’s bat that will do the talking when he makes his big league debut, presumably tonight at Citi Field against the Dodgers. He projects to be a middle-of-the-order force and run producer with the ability to swat 20-25 homers a year while getting on base at a high clip. WHAT TO EXPECT: Conforto was drafted six picks following another advanced college bat that shot through the minor leagues, Cubs catcher Kyle Schwarber, and the Mets can only hope for the same kind of success from their young lefty swinger that the Hoosiers product has enjoyed. With just 520 professional at bats and a sparse offense around him, Conforto is being thrust in to a situation most front offices don’t prefer placing an elite prospect in, but as Conforto has shown, he will give a professional at bat and he isn’t afraid to work counts and wait for his pitch to drive. The power, paired with the new (well, newer) dimensions at Citi Field, will play well at the big league level and expect quite a few doubles with a few of them leaving the yard. The question is, will anyone else from that lineup be on base for him to drive in?

Same fans are just as prone to saying that he was clearly brought up too late if he performs. Hindsight is the superpower of all mook fans.

Early impression: The first thing that strikes me is that I haven't seen him swing at a bad pitch yet. Took hacks at some borderline offerings w/2 strikes but those were protection type swings which he fought off nicely and has yet to go fishing for garbage (and isn't THAT a nice change?). The plate discipline and controlled swing are what the scouting reports have said about him and, small sample warning so far, he's been exactly that.
