He is now a Pirate AGAIN, ESPN says today is 12 years to the day since they sent him to Chicago (along with Kenny Lofton) for Matt Bruback, Jose Hernandez, and Bobby Hill.

Pirates got ripped off then i think?

I didn't necessarily mind his name linked with us, as he's been hitting quite a bit better over the last month or so; I think it was more the idea of giving up something-- anything-- of value to get him that bugged me.

That said, a couple of key hits this week notwithstanding, watching Campbell at-bats makes me feel like I should be tallying them with penknife cuts in a wall, or my arm.

Ramirez has been swinging the bat quite a bit better lately, and he was obtained for a relief prospect who currently has a 4.60 ERA and 1.72 WHIP in AAA. I would have upped the bid on that.

Padres reportedly seeking one "high end" prospect in return for Justin Upton and "possibly two", a price which reportedly has the Mets backing off. [sez: MLB.com]
Upton, hitting .248 w/15 HRs, has the pro-rated portion of his $14.5mil contract remaining for this season at which point he can be a FA. Any team acquiring him this year can NOT extend a qualifying offer to him for the purposes of recouping a pick in next year's amateur draft.

Three LHPs was the price for Cueto: Brandon Finnegan (who pitched part of last year and this w/KC), plus minor leaguers John Lamb (a 24 y/o who was 9-1, 2.67 at AAA Omaha) and Cody Reed (22 y/o, recently promoted to AA).

Sounds like SN stands for 'Speculation Nation' to me.
Actually 'Sports Nation' is an umbrella grouping for all kinds of sites so that "info" can be anything from sourced rumors to fan-boi blabbering.

Regardless of which, dealing Wheeler now would be all kinds of problematic. He won't pitch in the big leagues for nearly another year still so it's both tough to figure teams giving up too much to get him and it would be an ultimate 'sell low' situation for the Mets. He may ultimately be traded, I just don't think it's going to be now.

Yeah...I consider Wheeler part of the Mets plan going forward.

If Wheeler can fully recover from TJ, I salivate thinking of being able to start a young flamethrower that can hit 94 MPH or more in every single game (barring injury, regression, YYYBBB). Add Familia to the back end (along with Parnell and Mejia if they continue to improve and be effective) and HOLY MOLY it would be like hitting the gas on every opposing team and very rarely taking the foot off.

I've been playing OOTP16; in June 2015, I traded Daniel Murphy to the Royals for Finnegan straight up. Murphy played out the string in KC, then signed a two-year deal in LA, followed by a one-year deal in MIN. He went 8-for-41 as a Twin, got hurt, and retired.

It's 2021; Finnegan has been an ace lefty out of my pen, even finishing third in the 2020 Cy Young race as a middle reliever. I just signed him to a three-year, $26M extension.

2 minor league pitchers apparently including former 1st round pick (34th overall 2013) Sean Manaea (LHP). Manaea was in the back half in several of the top 100 prospects lists done over this past winter, not unlike say Brandon Nimmo. He hasn't pitched much this season (just 7 starts) or all that well for that matter so there may be some problem going on.

In the transaction, the Nats agreed to pick up Papelbon's 2016 option (though at a reduced rate and with deferred money) so we best get used to seeing him there for a while.
The Phils also pay part of this year's freight and it doesn't sound like the minor leaguer they got back for him is much to crow about. So the main attraction for the Phils seems to be that they got a malcontent out of their clubhouse and got out from under the option which would have kicked in automatically with a certain number of games closed -- but that's what tends to happen when closers get signed to long-term deals.

Re: Deadline Dealios!!!! (!!!) (?)

Just to clarify, the reports on this deal say it would be: Morse + Latos + One 'competitive balance'* pick going from Miami to Los Angeles in exchange for three (yet to be named) minor league pitchers heading to south Florida

Given that neither Morse or Latos are having a particularly good year, it seems like a bit of a tame trade for the Dodgers now that the Giants are hot on their heels.

* 'CB' picks, though I don't claim to understand exactly what the criteria are for handing them out, are given to smaller market teams so there's no way the Dodgers would ever have one of their own

Something to do with market share and blah blah blah. varies slightly each year. Could probably look it up, but it's not super important. Think it's pick like ..35? practically a first rounder. Somewhere around where Wright got picked originally. (They called them sandwich picks back then, but now that 'is a hot dog a sandwich' debate has gotten heated, they did away with that terminology)

most people framing this is pretty bad from the Marlins standpoint. think I agree.

Yeah I know in general what CB picks are but I've just never delved into exactly how they're awarded -- it's like half on merit (if one determines that a small market size is "merit" - StL gets one almost every year) and half via lottery (which is an even stranger concept if you ask me) and they're the only picks which are allowed to be traded.

most people framing this is pretty bad from the Marlins standpoint. think I agree.

Without knowing who the minor leaguers are it's impossible to say (and it may take several years after that to know for sure) but it seems like a strange deal for the Dodgers too. They already have too many OFs and A Gonzalez is a top-notch everyday 1B so that reduces Morse to a RH pinch-hitter who's not really hitting these days (like an older & worse-fielding version of Scott Van Slyke). And I shouldn't think the Giants are quaking in their boots saying; 'Oh shit, the Dodgers just added Mat Freakin Latos to their roster!!'

I hope not. When I heard of this deal, II thought that if they couldn't trade Morse to the AL (or the Tibetan League for that matter. He looks like a Yeti.) I was glad he at least got traded to a team that won't play the Mets too many times each year. If he gets released, he still could come back to the NL East.

From MLB.com: If the trade is completed, the Dodgers will reportedly receive Latos and Morse as well as Atlanta starting pitcher Alex Wood, closer Jim Johnson, reliever Luis Avilan and infielder Jose Peraza, while sending to Atlanta recent Cuban signing Hector Olivera, injured reliever Paco Rodriguez and Minor League pitcher Zach Bird, according to Major League sources. Trade deadline winners and losers

Loser: New York Mets' fans angst. The Gomez trade ... Flores' tears ... fears that the Wilpons were too cheap to pick up a bat ... that brutal loss to the Padres on Thursday ... it was worse than taking the subway in 100-degree temperatues. And then ...

Winner: New York Mets fans. In the end, they get Yoenis Cespedes ... and didn't have to give up Zack Wheeler, like they would have in the Gomez deal from a couple of days ago. Cespedes is just a rental, but holding on to Wheeler is a good thing. Cespedes was hot in July -- .291, eight home runs -- and his current .323 OBP is higher than 2013 and 2014, but he's a streaky hitter and probably should remain in left field even though he played a little center his first year with the A's.

All that is known right now is that the Dodgers took on and/or paid out a helluva lotta money in this transaction. Guess a $200+ mil payroll just doesn't buy as complete a team as it used to.

Braves to Dodgers:
Jose Peraza (AAA pitcher - Top 100 prospect in pre-season 2015)
Bronson Arroyo (hasn't played all year - essentially a salary dump of approx $8 mil, split between teams undisclosed)
Luis Avilan (ML LH reliever)
Jim Johnson (ML reliever - twice a 50-save man w/Balt)
Alex Wood (LH starter)

Marlins to Dodgers:
Mat Latos (we all know him - big, blond ape with all the silly tats. Signed thru this year only)
Mike Morse (a salary dump who was promptly released by LA. Already picked up by Pitt, Dodgers will pay ~$10.5 mil for the remainder of this season plus 2016)

Dodgers to Braves:
Paco Rodriguez (ML LH reliever)
Zachary Bird (A-ball pitcher)
Hector Olivera (currently in AAA OK City - Cuban emigre signed to a six year/$62.5 mil deal in May '15. Dodgers will pay entire $28 mil signing bonus.)

Dodgers to Marlins:
Victor Araujo (A-ball reliever)
Jeff Brigham (A-ball pitcher)
Kevin Guzman (A-ball pitcher)

Marlins to Braves:
2016 competitive balance round A pick to the Braves (probably an upper-30s/lower-40s pick next year)

Re: Deadline Dealios!!!! (!!!) (?)

And as noted at the bottom of the previous page, the Dodgers ended up DFA-ing five different dudes (but not Carl Crawford) in the flurry.

Heck, they just benched a guy (cf Joc Pederson) two weeks after he was in the All Star Game.

Here’s an on-air, show-ending quote from an expert among experts on Wednesday. Guess who said it:

Other inside, all-knowing claims made by Mike Francesa included that neither the Rockies’ Troy Tulowitzki nor the Brewers’ Carlos Gomez would be traded

There's nothing Mushnick loves more than catching Francesa (or Fran-Say-So as he often calls him) in loud pronouncements seemingly born of insider authority that turn out to be unfounded.

Re: Deadline Dealios!!!! (!!!) (?)

I think this may get lost in a lot of the Flores love that is going on, but this was pretty cool, too. I've never heard of anyone else doing it.

Marc Carig of Newsday wrote:
"I told him I know it's a business and he has a job to do, but I'd really like to be here because of what's about to happen," Wheeler told Newsday on Sunday. "I've been here a couple of years and want to see it through."

He spoke about why he made the call. "I know that doesn't happen every day and I was nervous about doing it," said Wheeler, still a Met. "But I figured it was the best way to get it across that I wanted to stay and be a part of this team's winning future."

As a fan, I'm glad Wheeler wants to stay because I've always wanted him around and would have been disappointed if he'd been traded.

That's what I think they understand. This year may or may not play out gloriously, but there's an extended golden era we're just now on the threshold of.
