Frayed Knot and John Cougar Lunchbucket

JCL and Frayed Knot, for those of you latecomers (yeah, right), are brothers. JCL posted this message this morning at Facebook.

My mom Barbara died early this morning. She was diagnosed late last year with a form of leukemia but was doing quite well until being hospitalized this past week. Mom was very funny and took great care of everyone she knew, especially her grandkids when my sister was ill. She was an elementary school teacher by trade who became a self-taught community theater and high school drama club legend, loved her 5 kids, each of her 3 collies, bourbon, Harry Belafonte's 'Calypso' record, Ina Garten and (some) other Food Network stars, and the central coast of Maine where she spent several years in retirement before returning as as a widowed septugenarian to cart 3 young kids around suburban Virginia when Jen was stricken with ALS. We are planning a funeral here early next week I get details up asap. In lieu of flowers please consider a donation to the Robert Packard Center for ALS Research at Johns Hopkins (alscenter.org) or your local chapter of the ALS Association (alsa.org).

Gentlemen, I'm sure I speak for everybody in saying: please know the condolences and best thoughts of your online family are with you, and we are at your service.

As JCL has often remarked when reflecting on the accomplishments of our forebears, "Our parents kick our asses."

Re: Frayed Knot and John Cougar Lunchbucket

Thanks gang.
Things could have been worse. She had various conditions over the last few years which were being managed ... right up until they weren't.
But at that age when things start going wrong they pretty much start to snowball and so she went from OK to out of it within a few days and basically all the decisions by then were obvious and uncontroversial. All the (remaining) kids were able to get there in time as did her sister (from Honolulu) so things were as good as can be expected.

We need to recruit those other 2 siblings to the CPF.

Think of the great insight we have missed over the years.

A couple of hits with runners on once in a while would be a help.

Not sure sister B knows whether a baseball is pumped up with air or stuffed with feathers so I'm afraid her contributions would be limited and/or bizarre. Jen, though hardly an expert, was the better sports fan of the sisters (Mets plus Duke basketball) and did come here on occasion just to read as I used to send her links to some of our music threads.
Brother C knows about this place and does test positive for the NYM gene but has never chosen to participate. In all he'd probably be more given to mid-game rants -- "CUDDYER STINKS, GET RID OF HIM NOW!!!!" -- than partake in extended banter. Something about a wife, a job, and two young girls takes up his time he claims. Besides, stalking the Mets through the internet would just rob him of the time he spends stalking RUSH through the internet (and in person).

Re: Frayed Knot and John Cougar Lunchbucket

I was reminded tonight of mom's tangential NYM fandom which should have been mentioned at some point in this thread.
Oh yeah she was a fan even if mostly by association from her husband and three sons and certainly more removed as compared to us geeks here. But she was there with dad on a bitterly cold first game ever at Shea and the rash she showed coming off that game turned out to be caused not by the cold as first thought but by German measles at a time when GM was an unchecked cause of birth defects and she was four months pregnant with my sister Jennifer* some nine years prior to Roe v Wade (though things turned out all right on that front). Five years later she allowed me to watch the '69 clinching even before finishing my homework and she was watching on a TV in a western NY motel during my brother's college parents weekend when the ball dribbled through Buckner's legs.

Her fandom varied at times as it's tough to follow baseball when you have five kids under the age of 11 as she did at one point, but her first favorite was Koosman as she was turned off by Seaver's air of arrogance and so chose the other guy in the days even when Tom Terrific was clearly the chosen one. And what got me thinking about all this tonight was that Bartolo was her last favorite. I think it was just the way he seemed so unfazed by it all, blowing bubbles and flipping the ball to himself whether it was following a strike out or a gut-wrenching homer, something about his demeanor appealed to her and there's no doubt she would have gotten a kick out of his CG replete with a behind the back flip tonight. Prior to that her favorite was Dickey and before that it was Ike. Not sure what it was about either but she had latched on to R.A. even before it became fashionable during his CY season and there was always something about Ike that made her root for him during both his good season and in his later struggles to duplicate it. She understood the reasons why each had to go but was sorry to see it happen anyway.

* btw, happy 51st Jen - or as we call it: fourth year out of that fucking chair
