IGT 07/29 - Padres at Mets - Even it Up!

Jul 29 2015 06:00 AM

San Diego at NY Mets
When: 7:10 PM ET, Wednesday, July 29, 2015
Where: Citi Field, New York City, New York
SportsDirect Inc.

The New York Mets go for their fourth consecutive victory when they host the San Diego Padres on Wednesday in the second of a three-game series. New York continued its stellar play at home, improving to 35-16 at Citi Field with Tuesday's 4-0 victory and drawing within one game of the first-place Washington Nationals in the National League East.

The Mets bolstered their bullpen on Monday with the acquisition of Tyler Clippard, who converted 17 of 21 saves with Oakland prior to the trade. The deal loomed especially large when reliever Jenrry Mejia was handed a 162-game suspension by Major League Baseball on Tuesday for his second violation of the league's drug policy this season. The Padres didn't have a runner reach base until the seventh inning in the opener of a 10-game road trip en route to their 15th shutout loss of the year. San Diego sends right-hander Tyson Ross to the mound Tuesday to oppose New York's Bartolo Colon.

TV: 7:10 p.m. ET, FSN San Diego, SNY (New York)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Padres RH Tyson Ross (6-8, 3.45 ERA) vs. Mets RH Bartolo Colon (9-9, 4.60)

Ross' six start unbeaten streak came to a halt in his last outing when he was reached for four runs (three earned) over 5 2/3 innings in a 4-0 defeat versus Miami. He was 3-0 with five quality starts and one rain-shortened outing over his previous six turns while permitting a total of nine earned runs. He has allowed one run over 14 innings in two career starts versus the Mets, including seven scoreless frames last year.

Colon dropped to 0-5 over his last six starts despite a superb effort last time out, limiting the Los Angeles Dodgers to one run and five hits over a season-high eight innings. New York's offense has been abysmal during Colon's six-game skid, managing a combined four runs while failing to score in three of his starts. Colon is 2-2 with a 2.67 ERA versus the Padres but has struggled against Melvin Upton Jr., who is 10-for-33 against him.

WALK-OFFS:
1. Mets RF Curtis Granderson has his safely in three straight and 11 of 12 games.
2. Padres 2B Jedd Gyorko is 2-for-22 over the last seven games.
3. Mets 1B Lucas Duda has homered three times in the past three games.

I'm guessing we will see Recker get the start.

Should be interesting to see how the Plawecki/Recker thing plays out once d'Arnaud gets back. I'm almost in the camp of keeping Recker to start every five days when Bart is pitching only because Colon's splits are so polarizing when others catch him. Plawecki would then get every day reps in Las Vegas until September.

Re: IGT 07/29 - Padres at Mets - Even it Up!

I'm guessing the plan will be the same as last time — keep Plawecki around until d'Arnaud demonstrates that he's ready to catch a starter's workload (80% or so) and then swap in Recker as the backup until September (or until they get sick of him).

Re: IGT 07/29 - Padres at Mets - Even it Up!

I wonder if Plawecki's ascent to non-suckiness has made him more chippable in that giant trade we're making later this week. You'd have to figure if d'Arnaud never got hurt he'd be among the best things we have to offer.

that ascent may have just been him standing on tiptoes.

he's not hitting well over the last week or two.

Re: IGT 07/29 - Padres at Mets - Even it Up!

I'd still argue he's more tradeable today that he was 3 or 4 weeks ago, no?

Edgy MD
Jul 29 2015 12:25 PM
Re: IGT 07/29 - Padres at Mets - Even it Up!

I'd agree with that, yes, but I'm not sure the Mets can necessarily endure his loss more than they could have three-four weeks ago. I think they're gonna want that starting catcher redundancy for the rest of the season. And if d'Arnaud is going to walk himself safely across the finish line, then they possibly look to deal his partner in the offseason.

If a super-trade goes down (not sure it will, but...), I don't think he'll be part of the package.

I'm thinking Herrera and Flores seem kind of redundant right now, so maybe one of them is more expendable.

well, marginally. I don't think anyone's super changed in opinion on him over that small a time frame. But it's certainly lower than it was in April before he didn't really hit much in the majors.

I think he's always been a high candidate for trade though, the week or two of decent production probably re-ignited a few things though, sure.

This is a steal, isn't it? Nobody knows what's to happen with an injured guy, and Flores though I think he can be a good hitter isn't getting it done often enough to help the team.

Plus this reverses the mistake of the Santana trade.

I like it.

I don't like parting with Wheeler but I'm gonna have to. If he was going to be ready by next spring I think I'd feel differently. But he won't. We need this now. We have a good core arm wise, Fulmer & others behind Wheeler. This is affordable.

Whether they were strikes or not is pretty much irrelevant (not to the AB but to the larger question). Point is that back-door breaking stuff that nips (or doesn't) the outside corner are virtually impossible to hit so it's not like he's looking overmatched by ML hurlers. An extra inch or two outside and it's Ball 4. An inch or two closer to him and I think he'd be all over it.

But social media doesn't really enter into this as far as I'm concerned.
There's nothing to be gained by Flores staying in the game for another 2-3 innings and there's a whole lot to be lost by a simple pitch getting away from a Padre reliever or a simple turned ankle.
Even if Wilmer and the entire stadium didn't already know it as would have been the case in the pre-wifi days, Sandy certainly knows it and you assume Terry and the coaches too.

This might be the new norm in such things.

Never been a fan of the new norm since it became new.

I'm not objecting to him staying in the game because of his emotional state. I'm against it from a logistical standpoint of what it could do to the trade.
Yes, they don't HAVE to take him out until the deal is official, but it's simply smart business to do so. The only role social media plays here is that more people know about it quicker than they would have otherwise.

I agree. I'm old school like that too. I'd be more concerned about trying to not allow this to be a public thing. In the old days the manager just wouldn't tell the player til the game was over and the fans wouldn;t know until it wwas written up by someone--it has been portrayed as a dun deal for hours now, and that's on the media. Oh, social media does effect things.

He's probably not a millionaire, and being a wealthy man of any degree shouldn't mean losing at 16 your right to professional self-determination.

Just because trading without consent is the norm we've grown up with doesn't make it good. It certainly brings out the worst in fans, and I'm glad we get to see the real effect up close.

Someone needs to console and comfort Wilmer.
He needs a hug.
