Syndergaard vs Zimmermann - same match-up as 11 days ago which wound up a 4-3 Nats win NS that day = 5 IP, 1 run, 5 hits but also 5 BBs and, like deGrom last night, a high pitch count forced him out early JZ = 7 IP, 3 Runs on 7 hits. A 2-out/2-RBI 2B from Nieuwenhuis followed by a Plawecki single in the 4th got the runs in This was the one where Parnell later gave up 3 in the 8th after 2 were out, then we K'd 3 times vs Storen Take away that loss plus the one vs SD the other day and we'd be in 1st right now - but those games count too so we're not.

The New York Mets have a chance to move into a tie for first place in the National League East on Sunday night when they host the division-leading Washington Nationals in the finale of a three-game series. The Mets have recorded a pair of one-run victories and can post their first three-game sweep of Washington since May 25-27, 2009. Lucas Duda overshadowed the New York debut of newly acquired Yoenis Cespedes (0-for-3) by continuing his power surge with a pair of solo homers and a tiebreaking RBI double following an intentional walk to Cespedes. Duda has eight blasts over his past seven games and took over the major-league lead with a fifth multi-homer game. Shortstop Ian Desmond, who was 5-for-9 in a three-game series against the Mets last month, had a two-run single as the Nationals failed to score more than a pair of runs for the fifth time in six games. Washington right-hander Jordan Zimmermann attempts to prevent a sweep as he opposes New York rookie Noah Syndergaard. TV: 8:08 p.m. ET, ESPN PITCHING MATCHUP: Nationals RH Jordan Zimmermann (8-6, 3.36 ERA) vs. Mets RH Noah Syndergaard (5-5, 2.70) Zimmermann did not factor in the decision after giving up three runs in seven innings versus the Mets on July 22 and was saddled with a loss six days later after he was reached for three runs over six innings at Miami. Zimmermann won his last three starts heading into the All-Star break but is winless over his last three turns. He beat the Mets with six innings of one-run ball in his season debut to improve to 8-5 against them. Syndergaard was perfect through six innings in his last start and wound up tossing eight scoreless innings of three-hit ball in a 4-0 victory over San Diego. He did not factor in the decision in his previous turn versus Zimmermann and the Nationals despite giving up one run over five innings, a start marred by a season-high five walks. Syndergaard has been superb at home with a 5-1 record and 1.46 ERA in seven starts at Citi Field. WALK-OFFS: 1. Cespedes won the 2013 Home Run Derby at Citi Field, beating Washington's Bryce Harper in the final. 2. Nationals CF Denard Span (back) swung a bat and threw in the outfield for the first time since going on the 15-day disabled list July 10. 3. The Mets sent rookie OF Michael Conforto to Triple-A Las Vegas to clear a roster spot for Cespedes.

I still very much enjoy attending Sunday night games. I like the spectacle. I like the fact that lots of people are watching when the Mets are doing well. I like that you can get everything else done on your Sunday and still go to the game. I also like avoiding idiotic ESPN announcers, from Morgan to Schilling. There's no way that I would miss attending the biggest game in Citi Field history. Let's Go Mets!

Fantastic game. No, Citi Field doesn't shake, and probably never will. It does get loud though, and it was revelation to see this kind of crowd at an August game in this park. Fans had lots of fun taunting Harper as the game went on. I also enjoyed the "you are out" chant while Lobaton stood around at first base waiting for the umpires to finish the video review. Mets now selling a great merchandise item: a foam Hammer, with 34 on one side and the Mets logo on the other. I was also encouraged to see people walking around with Cespedes 52 shirts already.

Matt Williams' performance in the weekend series has him in everybody's crosshairs. It's unforgivable to go into a series this big and lose two one run games where the Mets scored the winning run in their final at bat without your top two relievers getting on the field at some point!

A less strident/more analytical look on the same story here Couple observations: 1) I'm surprised anyone (besides us) noticed because I figured that once training camps opened that all Washington Post sports reporters were transferred over the the Redskins beat 2) The biggest off-season move that Rizzo made (aside from signing Scherzer) was dealing Clip-Art away for Yunel Escobar and allowing Rafael Soriano to walk. Both were good moves on the whole but they also knew it came at the expense of bullpen depth which getting Casey Janssen alone wasn't going to fix. 3) But then once you go out and get Papelbon there's no excuse not to use him and/or Storen at some point in those games - although Williams is hardly the only manager who makes a habit of 'saving' his back-end guys for the lead protecting inning that never comes.
