Re: Going to the game...

Best game I've ever been to at CitiField. In fact, other than the No-Hitter I can't think of another game I would have rather seen.

We could tell things would be different the minute we arrived. We have never had to park so far away and wait so long to get into the stadium. (the delay meant we had no time to eat at the club before the game). The crowd was buzzing right from the get go. We were all dying to give Cespedes a nice welcome and reward Wilmer Flores. deGrom was, obviously, shaky in the first. You could tell right away that he didn't have his slider. It also felt like he was getting squeezed by the home plate ump (especially on the 3-2 pitch to Werth), but it's was hard to really tell from our seats. The Desmond hit was softly hit. We were all shocked to see it find it's way through. Falling behind early was a bit deflating, but there was still a lot of energy in the bottom of the inning. Cespedes got a huge ovation. I feel like he may have been trying too hard to do something special in his first at bat.

There was a "holy shit" moment when Flores hit the deep fly ball. I felt like it didn't have enough off the bat, but it kept on carrying. Too bad. It would have been incredible.

The energy started to drain as the game wore on. deGrom was not finding his slider, the Mets were not hitting. It seemed like everyone wanted to cheer but there was nothing to root for. The Duda home run got everyone going. deGrom didn't find his slider but seemed to get his change up working. Things were looking better.

The second Duda home run was the loudest I have ever heard CitiField. Everyone was jumping and screaming. It was funny, I felt like the place should have been shaking. Here is my suggestion for next year, weaken the CitiField infrastructure.

Matt Williams makes some curious decisions. I thought he might walk Cespedes, but I thought he even he would not be so dumb considering Duda is raking. Thanks Matt. The go-ahead double was even louder than before. Good chance for Wilmer to get a cheap RBI and let us cheer him. It was not his night.

Familia = awesome. We were all on our feet.

Fireworks were nice.

Great game overall.

Re: Going to the game...

Funny thing about walking Cespedes to get to Duda is their splits this year
Cespedes vs LHPs: .183/.244/.329
Duda vs LHPs: .305/.359/.558

Now their career numbers aren't nearly so lopsided (although Cespedes has always been slightly better vs RHPs during his ML time) but add that to the Lucas hotness factor (we here at CPF labs are still working out the numbers on that) and it makes the decision even more shaky. And, as I mentioned in the IGT, he's doing all high leverage inning stuff, plus all of Friday's late & extra innings, without touching either of his top two relievers.
Williams is a definite "by the book" kind of guy with his bullpen and he's been burned by it several times in his first 1-1/2 as manager, including last October.

Best thing about this, though, is that the Mets finally have a lineup that might cause a manager to have the occasional dilemma.

Now it's sounding like there will be a call up for a start next week, pushing Colon/Niese to the Saturday/Sunday starts. In that case we will be there for the Sunday matinee to see Niese, sad to not catch one of the kids over the course of those two games.

Going to my first game in about three years. Friday night. I have a question. I bought my ticket through StubHub. My confirmation email says

It's easy to get into the event with your phone
Just open the StubHub app and go to 'Current orders' in My Account. Tap your order and then 'View tickets'. Show your ticket at the venue and you're in.

My printable ticket says

DO NOT SCAN FROM PHONE AT GATES - MUST BE PRINTED

Well, obviously I'm going to print it. Not taking any chances. But which is it? And can't these guys get their stories straight?

yeah. I mean, technically as long as it's a barcode you can scan it at the gate, as you've been able to do for years and years, (turn the brightness down on the screen helps I think) but I can be flighty and they don't really guarantee it I don't think unless you're using the iPhone iPassport app or whatever that's called.

I selected the smartphone tickets for the game I went to in April because it would be "faster." Instead, the ticket taker had to scan my phone, print out a ticket, and then scan that ticket. And repeat four times, because there were five of us. It was ridonculous. So much for technology.

as usual, this is at least partly a 'PEBKAC' (Problem Exists Between Keyboard And Chair) error. You CAN scan the phone but likely due to the refraction through the glass screen the margin for error is small and most people (you scan yourself at many of the turnstiles) give up before adjusting the phone/angle/distance correctly.

sounds funny, but it's actually not redundant.

'possibility' not everyone wins the lottery.

'opportunity' you don't have to buy.

'subject to availability' they're probably only selling like 17 tickets, so even if you win they might be sold out.

'potential' Lottery is for all games any non-eliminated NL team has a chance of playing, whether or not they do.

Re: Going to the game...

I see you can get guaranteed 2015 postseason tickets if you put down a $500 deposit on a 2016 season ticket plan.

If you don't want a 2016 plan, you could put down the deposit anyway and look at it as a $500 surcharge for 2015 playoff tickets.

The Mets will play between one and ten home games during the postseason. (One if the Dodgers get home field in the NLDS and sweep the Mets, ten if the Mets home field in the NLDS and NLCS and both series go seven games, and the Mets advance to the World Series and that series goes at least five games.)

So it would be quite a gamble. The $500 might be okay if you're going to go to ten games but if it's just one game, that's a different story. But I wonder if anyone is pondering this strategy?

Not in the day and age of StubHub.

But..

if you're really ambitious, the pricing on tickets for plan holders is good because it includes a 10% discount and less fees than you get on single game seats unless you buy at the stadium. It wouldn't be that hard to resell them. (which is going to happen, scalpers WILL be doing this. means more volume for us on the secondary market next year)

you're better off going $250 deposit for 20 games though, unless you actually plan to live at Citi next year. You don't get all the postseason games, but you'll get there, and $250 could cover all, or most, of your plan and it's much less work to try to resell those.

Re: Going to the game...

I mulled a trip to both NYC and LA and the purchase of scalped tix and see one of the games. My biggest problem is not knowing yet who is going to have home field advantage in that series and being able to take time off and book travel on the right dates ahead of time. The longer it remains up in the air, the less likely I will go.

I am 50/50 on a trip to Chicago or St. Louis if an NLCS opportunity comes up.

Re: Going to the game...

If the Mets are at Citi Field on Saturday for Game 2, I'm sure I'll check the StubHub prices (if any tickets are available) but I suspect I'll find that they'll cost much more than I'd want to spend.

In 1985, as things were coming down to the wire, I was thinking that I'd move mountains to get tickets to a Mets postseason game. Figuring that moving mountains isn't all that easy, I got a partial season ticket plan for 1986 and it paid off big time. (I was at three World Series games at Shea, including Game Six.) Now I think I'd be quite satisfied to watch from home. I think I'd be willing to pay the cover price for tickets (although I haven't seen the numbers yet) but I really doubt that I'd pay a significant markup.

I can't afford the 3x markup that's currently floating around for NLDS tickets. Maybe if they pop out a second chance drawing. Or if we both win to the NLCS.

I remember paying $45 or something for '99 Game 1 NLDS tix (Fonzie grand slam game) and it was like a markup from like $18 bucks and they were decent.

LA stubhub tix start at $47 to get in top corner of the upper tank. My friends are willing to go to $150. hashtag sports. Jeez.

They're selling tickets before they know which games the Dodgers will be hosting?

How does that work? If you buy tickets for Game 1, would they translate to Game 3?

And I guess if you buy Game 5 in L.A. and it's played in New York instead, you'd get a refund.

I'm pretty sure that's exactly how it works. You're getting tickets for the third game in that stadium, if and when it happens.

I believe I paid $50 for the NLCS in '99.

2006 NLDS game 2, Loge Reserved, section 4, row J were $55 each.
2006 LCS HOME GAME 4 UR section 4 row Q 5-8 were $75 each.
in 2008 MR 33 Row 'P' were $57 after fees.

you purchase tickets for HOME GAME 1, or HOME GAME 3.

I just checked StubHub for "Home Game 2" at Citi Field. Standing Room Only tickets are selling in the $130 range. Promenade outfield seats start around $150 each. Field level box seats are around $400 each.

I'm a little bit tempted on those $150 seats, but only if it's played on Saturday. I doubt that I'll pull the trigger and buy tickets, though. I assume that the NLCS, if the Mets should advance, would only be more expensive, right?

technically. Though there would probably be 4 games versus maybe only 2-3, so spreads it out more.

The base ticket will be a little higher, but those are already at least 3x marked up so you might not actually get that much higher for NLCS (at least in advance, coming home for game 6 and 7 is murkier)

It sounds like you're assuming that the Wild Card team will advance. If the Cardinals win the NLDS then the Mets would only have games 3, 4, and 5 of the NLCS at home.

I am assuming that yes. Screw the Cardinals.

Right now the Mets are still only guaranteed one home playoff game. Though probably 2. with the LCS you'd get at least 2, probably 3, but you're guaranteed none (you can actually purchase those tickets, but the supply is super low cause they're not on sale yet, these are just season ticket/plan people) They go on sale before the end of the first series though, and people are going to be less likely to buy for a series that might now happen. The draw of 'this is going to be game 6, at home, against the Cubs with a chance to clinch' is a much bigger thing.

'Letterbox'. Perfect way to describe the view from those seats. Great view of the field but once the ball rose above the player's heads, forget it. No idea where it was unless you watched the fielders moving towards it.

As to postseason attendance, my first game was Game 5, 1981 WS in L.A. The game where Gossage beaned Cey.

I think I've been to at least one game of every Mets postseason series since except '86. Didn't get a chance to get to any of those.

On my first-ever visit to Shea, in 1971 when I was eight years old, we had seats deep under the overhang in the Mezzanine. We couldn't see the sky or the scoreboard. My mother raised a stink (she could be good at that!) and got us moved to better seats, I think in the Upper Deck behind home plate, but not too far back.

I learned my lesson from that and never sat in those towards-the-back rows in Loge or Mezzanine again. (And I suspect I never will...)
