Re: Gomez to Astros

Gomez + Mike Fiers (aka the guy who hit Giancarlo in the face last year) to Houston for four prospects: LHP Josh Hader, RHP Adrian Houser, OFs Brett Phillips and Domingo Santana.
Phillips seems to be the highest rated of that bunch.

George Springer is on the DL right now but at some point the Astros are going to have an OF of Colby Rasmus, Springer, Gomez, and Jake Marisnick.

Former KC closer Joachim Soria to the Pirates for a prospect.

Re: Gomez to Astros

I suppose with a DH slot available the 'Stros are less concerned about Gomez's achy hip.

Re: Gomez to Astros

Let's just accept the Mets-leaked cover story, and say that he has an adductor/hip issue that could be problematic down the road.

They would have been taking on his below-market contract for a season and, like, a third... not signing him to a five-year, market-value deal. You think he's got a potentially-creaky hip? Ride out his contract, then QO the guy at year's end.

Re: Gomez to Astros

I'm sure they were willing to do that. Just not at the price.

Re: Gomez to Astros

The only reason the "money" thing doesn't ring 100% true with me is because its relatively so little to begin with, you'd think why?

And if it is a money thing, we have to ask how much below market can they expect to go and still be competitive with the market when its time to spend, and with competitors for whom money isn't nearly the object it is here?

I am not quite sure why but this is infuriating.

Re: Gomez to Astros

The other possibility is that the Astros made the Brewers a bigger offer than the Mets were willing to match.

Which is fine. We're talking about a guy with a .751 OPS in a hitters' park. That's a bit pricey for a the level of upgrade.

if he breaks a hip he's going on DL for like, all the season, and accepting any QO.

But you don't give up Wheeler for that.

Re: Gomez to Astros

Today's loss bothers me.

Not getting Carlos Gomez, not so much.

He's still young. He could heal and still have some good play ahead of him. But I get a mere eight months to find out? And I'm giving up Flores and Wheeler to find out? And take on all the financial risk? He's barely outplayed Flores on his own this season as it is.

Could still heal? He's actually BEEN playing, and playing well, having posted a .258/.388/.470 line over the last month.

And he appears to have outplayed Flores by quite a bit, Captain BigAssertion (1.8 fWAR vs. 1.0fWAR, 1.6 BWAR vs. 0.2 bWAR), even allowing for a lost first month-and-a-half and reduced baserunning adventuring. He's a VERY good player, even in an off-year. A rarer player than you seem to think, at a deal that's paying him less than Colon? He's likely worth Flores and Wheeler and then some.

Re: Gomez to Astros

I ain't allowing covetousness due me in. I view him with suspicion. Suspicion!

And Flores may suddenly have gone from our starting shortstop to the dark half of a platoon second baseman, but he's still at the top of the depth chart on opening day 2016 when Johnson and Uribe and Murphy are all presumably gone.

First Kasmir, now Gomez.
The 'Stros are still pissed at the Mets about 1986.

The only ones that can know for certain are the Cardinals.

Suck on Wilmer's fWAR.

I examined Carlos Gomez and he looked fine! The hips are the part between the arms and neck, right?

0 for 5.

No teammates greeted him at home plate to end the game. It's early, but right now, it's Flores 1, Gomez 0.

I mean, ultimately Gomez will win that since he's a much better player (until the hip breaks), but I'd take the Mets route to the playoffs over the Astros right now. Tough division.

I'm willing to bet 69 Cranebucks that Flores and Wheeler give their teams more fWAR/$ going forward through the end of their teams' current terms of control than Gomez gives his team.

Re: Gomez to Astros

Just checking in here-

Gomez since the trade to Houston is .188/.233/.261 (74 PA)

Flores in that time .294/.333/.490 (54 PA)

Cespedes at a Met .274/.303/.425 (76 PA)

The Mets could still ultimately look bad if Fullmer turns into a stud ace AND Wheeler doesnt AND Flores doesnt give them much the rest of this year and the rest of the period he is under control. but it looks like the Mets are pretty likely to be the winners here

Re: Gomez to Astros

And the "throw in" on that deal has been the better player Houston received.
Mike Fiers stunk it up in his first Astros start but has allowed a combined one earned run in three starts since, most notably Friday night when he allowed no hits in a complete game vs LAD.

Second straight no-hitter where the no-no has been on that pitcher's first ever complete game.

Iwakuma: no-hitter on Aug 12th was his 88th ML start
Fiers: last night was his 59th game started
