Re: Dave Dombrowski Fired

Seems strange to let him go less than a week after allowing him to move three of your best players.

Re: Dave Dombrowski Fired

I get the feeling that he was not coming back after the season any way. What I read at the Free Press seemed to give Dombrowski good marks for his trades, especially in light of his contract position at the time.

sorta the exact right point isn't it? Give a new guy time to get his feet wet in arguably the slowest part of the season?

Not the way I see it, but sure.

Re: Dave Dombrowski Fired

It's not exactly a new guy. Al Avila is taking over; he's been Dombrowski's #2 for quite a while.

He'll be fine. I hope his son can handle it.

Dombrowski:"Come on son, you can't play out there anymore."
Dombrowski Jr: "Waaaa Waaaaa. Why daddy, why! Waaaaa!!"

Re: Dave Dombrowski Fired

It made sense that DD and the Tigers both needed to move on. Doing it now allows Avila to get established for a couple of months, but more importantly IMO, it allows DD to talk to other teams without any tampering issues.

He got them through the trade deadline (having Avila in charge during that period would have brought the sharks in,) and now the Tigers are positioned to face the future with a new guy.

Hired by Red Sox. Cherington stepping down as GM

Wow, gosh, and golly. Who'd've guessed the model of the forward-thinking front office would become a model of instability?

Re: Dave Dombrowski Fired

I know Henry and Dombrowski have a history together (with Florida). But doesn't this represent something of a return to clubby-old-skool-GM-fella-dom for these guys?

Hm... Cherrington got the Sox out of some bad long-term contracts, rebuilt the farm system, and won a World Series while doing it. Even though the Sox aren't doing well now, he seemed to have a long view plan to make them routine contenders again. I'm surprised he's gone, but I guess that's business.

Re: Dave Dombrowski Fired

From what I've heard Dombrowski offered to keep Cherrington around but he chose to leave, something that's probably not all that unusual a move.

BoSox have certainly had an odd ride the last couple of years
2012 - 69 wins, last place
2013 - 97 and a WS
2014 - 71, last place
2015 - on pace for 72 and last place

I dunno. Full marks for that tear down he did, but seemed to me he only built himself another future tear down this winter.

Not to pat Brian Cashman on the back, but while the Sox were emptying the bank on Sandoval he got Headley for about half the price.

Anyway it's believed Dombrowski will hire Frank Wren as GM

Re: Dave Dombrowski Fired

The Sandoval/Ramirez thing struck me as more of a move to bring in some entertaining players who may help the team contend in the short term until all the young talent they've been stockpiling come of age. Of course they failed to do that, but I don't think they were ever part of the long-term plan.

A month later, Wren becomes the VP of Baseball Ops. Good for him for falling upstairs. I don't get how the Braves tore down his castle so quickly.
