Re: I.G.T 8/14/15 Pitt & Mets Colon v Happ

Pittsburgh at NY Mets
When: 7:10 PM ET, Friday, August 14, 2015
Where: Citi Field, New York City, New York
SportsDirect Inc.

The New York Mets find themselves 11 games over .500 for the first time in five years, and their scintillating play at Citi Field certainly has played a significant role in their winning ways. The National League East-leading Mets vie for their eighth consecutive home victory on Friday when they open a three-game series against the Pittsburgh Pirates.

New York improved to 42-18 in Queens this season by recording its 11th win in 13 contests overall with a convincing 12-3 triumph over Colorado on Thursday afternoon. The Mets collected 15 extra-base hits and outscored the Rockies by a 23-5 margin during the four-game sweep, but they were manhandled to the tune of 21-4 en route to getting brushed aside at Pittsburgh on May 22-24. Winners of five of their last seven, the Pirates posted a 10-5 victory over St. Louis to salvage the finale of their three-game series on Thursday. Pedro Alvarez, who is 7-for-14 with two homers and three RBIs in his last four games, went deep to highlight a seven-run first inning on Thursday.

TV: 7:10 p.m. ET, ROOT (Pittsburgh), SNY (New York)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Pirates LH J.A. Happ (4-7, 4.78 ERA) vs. Mets RH Bartolo Colon (10-11, 4.76)

After having his last start skipped in the rotation, Happ will make take the mound on nine days' rest. The 32-year-old yielded four runs on eight hits in 4 1/3 innings in a loss to the Chicago Cubs in his Pittsburgh debut on Aug. 4. Yoenis Cespedes recorded three hits and had two RBIs and two runs scored in his last three games overall, but is just 3-for-19 with five strikeouts in his career versus Happ.

Colon suffered his seventh loss in eight decisions on Sunday after allowing four runs on nine hits in 6 2/3 innings of a 4-3 setback to Tampa Bay. The 42-year-old Dominican dominated Pittsburgh in his career, posting a 4-2 mark with a slim 1.97 ERA while limiting the club to a .217 batting average. Colon, however, was blasted in his last meeting with the Pirates, permitting five runs in six innings to take the loss.

WALK-OFFS:
1. New York OF Curtis Granderson belted a two-run shot on Thursday to reach the 20-homer plateau for the eighth time in his career.
2. Pittsburgh CF Andrew McCutchen, who had an RBI double to ignite a seven-run first inning on Thursday, is 12-for-28 with three homers, 11 RBIs and 19 runs scored in his last eight contests.
3. Should Mets 1B Lucas Duda (stiff back) miss his fourth straight game on Friday, manager Terry Collins admitted the team would have to consider sending the slugger to the disabled list.

Re: I.G.T 8/14/15 Pitt & Mets Colon v Happ

I think that Lags should have scored on Grandy's double earlier. If he didn't stop to watch the line drive I feel he could have. And that weird mis-play by the catcher when he spiked the ball. I can't fault Lags for head first sliding back to third though, so I don't consider that a missed opportunity. But one thing this team cannot afford to do is miss opportunities.

2 walks for Colon. Strange to see only 2 walks for a pitcher and consider that a possible red flag. But Bart has had such magnificent control this year.

Break out the bats guys! I don't want to be breaking out my shit list

Disappointing night.
Can't get one-runned by the likes of JA Happ

Lagares not running immediately on Grandy's double may not have made a difference as he's probably not sent with no outs there, but it's still a minor brain fart.
Cespedes has three hits including the only run we had in regulation but also had his worst ABs when the game was on the line, both early (2nd & 3rd none out) and then again late (K + not running).
Not good nights for either Cuddyer & Uribe.

Really hope we have a Duda sighting maņana.

Fucking JA Happ, what did I tell you?

Mets played listlessly enough at times to take a huge, pumped up and enthusiastic crowd right out of it, as they did while wasting 2nd and 3rd, 0 out and 3-4-5 up. Cudy and Uribe were real buzzkills tonight. Clippard works way too slowly. Parnell sucks. Colon was great. WE SHOULD HAVE WON. Taiwan Night at Big Shea.

Re: I.G.T 8/14/15 Pitt & Mets Colon v Happ

Well then here's some advice for Clip-Art if he wants to go more than one inning: Don't walk the leadoff hitter ... especially when it's a .218 hitter who has been released twice in the last three weeks. Such actions have a tendency to lead towards high-stress 20-pitch innings. I mean the K of McCutcheon was nice and all but better yet not to put yourself into having to walk that tightrope and I think it's possible that Terry might have been more apt to go a 2nd frame w/Clippard had he spun a 1-2-3 12-pitch inning instead. Plus maybe the pace at which he works made Terry think he had already thrown two innings.

As for Familia, he was PH'd for in a perfectly logical move with 2 outs and the winning run on base - so unless you're going to double-switch for him in advance ...

Edgy MD
Aug 15 2015 07:27 AM
Re: I.G.T 8/14/15 Pitt & Mets Colon v Happ

Well, if the strategy going in is to try and get multiple innings out of better hitters, that pinch-hit situation doesn't come up. Either (a) you're pinch-hitting for Familia after two innings, because he's your best pitcher and you put him in first, or (b) you're pinch-hitting for Cippard and not Familia who hasn't entered the game yet, because you got two innings out of TC, or (c) you didn't quite get two innings out of Clippard, but you couldn't because of what he allegedly expended in that first inning, but you ended up relieving him with Famila, who you double-switched in that second inning.

Under any scenario, you are committed to stretching your best relievers beyond a single inning in the late (and extra) innings of a tie game, and that pinch-hitting decision doesn't come up.
