...And Whoever's Playing the Nationals

G-Fafif
Aug 26 2015 11:18 PM

Three cheers for OTOFT (our temporary other favorite team) the San Diego Padres for hanging on in their 6-5 win over the Nationals. Two home runs for Justin Upton, who is forgiven for that dinger through the raindrops four weeks ago broke our hearts beyond repair one day before the trade for Yoenis Cespedes stitched them back together just fine.

Beloved righty Andrew Cashner goes up against heathen Joe Ross (he dares to wear 41????) 7:05 Thursday night.

OTOFT becomes the Miami Marlins this weekend, but for now Let's Go Padres!

Re: ...And Whoever's Playing the Nationals

This game warrants a little more attention. The Nats were down 6-2 heading into the bottom of the 7th. They rally for 3 runs, after a huge 2 run single from Bryce Harper. That hit puts runners on first and third with one out. Yunel Escobar is up in the count 3-0. A walk puts the winning run in scoring position with Ryan Zimmerman coming up. Escobar swings 3-0 and grounds into a double play.

But wait, there's more. On a bang-bang play at first, Escobar decides not to run through the bag, but instead slide head first. Maybe he saw Roberto Alomar do it many years ago.

Well done Yunel Escobar. If the rules would allow it, I would bring you Schaefer.

So, yeah, the Pods didn't, like, win. But they did seem to rub some bad, bad mojo all around the joint on their last night in town:

Oh man. If I'm a Nats fan, which God forbid, this is the most demoralizing loss of the year. Take the lead in the seventh, and give it right back and then some with five two-out runs, get two on, nobody out with Harper up, and then a wild pitch comes right back to Molina and one of the runners is thrown out. And that was pretty much it. Metsie, Metsie, Metsie!

Re: ...And Whoever's Playing the Nationals

After the legendary penultimate series of 1985 in St. Louis, the Mets' fading hopes rested on the Chicago Cubs rising from the dead for 48 hours and beating the Cardinals (while the Mets presumably took it to Montreal). I hated the Cubs from 1984. I hated the Cubs from 1969 and 1970 and pretty much every year. But until it was no longer useful, I rooted for the Cubs. It wasn't very useful, but this was and is Do What Ya Gotta Do time.

The Mets are taking care of their end. Would be lacking in due diligence to not help them out with whatever negative energy we can send the Nationals' way.

That fine young man Matt Wisler -- his mom is Wisler's mother -- goes for OTOFT, the Atlanta Braves, a unit that's clearly been saving its strength for the task ahead. Opening the series for the Beltway Benighteds is Jordan Zimmermann and his superfluous extra 'n'.

First pitch at Nots Park, 7:05 PM. Skip Caray, Pete Van Wieren and Ernie Johnson should have the call on the Superstation...but won't.

Nats hosting Baltimore for three while we're busy with Atlanta.

Tough to figure out the Birds this year. Mostly hanging around .500 (3 games under for the year, 10-8 in Sept) and no chance of repeating last season's surprise division winner. Mostly their pitching has let them down and the Nats are hitting right now. One can only hope that Buck and his boys manage to steal at least a game or two because after that it's a steady diet of Braves (3), Reds (1) and Phils (3) for the Washingtonians en route to the final series and it's smelling like they could run that table with a minimal number of breaks.

Add it all up, and it's even more questionable-- it's a one-run ballgame, and Papelbon's their last rock-solid bullpen arm available. How likely is it that he was "sending a message," versus backing a guy off the plate who just hammered a middle-out fastball over the fence?

Frayed Knot
Sep 23 2015 08:52 PM
Re: ...And Whoever's Playing the Nationals

How likely is it that he was "sending a message,"

Look, I had just tuned in when this happened so I'm not going to claim to have had my finger on the pulse the entire time. But it was a 3-2 count when he hit him so that's not a set-up for the put-away pitch coming up. And it was the second one that AB separated only by a slider away. It was also 2-out/none-on so perhaps he feels like he can put Machado on AND take some flesh with him without putting his team in too much danger. And do remember that we're not exactly dealing with the sharpest razor in the barber shop here; probably figured that hitting him is better than pitching around him.
I was also taking my cue from the O's announcers (not Gary Thorne who usually does their games) who seem to have no doubt it was intentional although they certainly could have a bias on the topic. The ump also obviously thought so immediately and Machado himself did as well.

A pitch doesn't have to be a beanball to piss off a team. Nor does it have to be a beanball to piss them off justifiably. Sometimes, just being seemingly or demonstrably reckless or indifferent to the power you have to seriously maim an opponent is enough to be infuriating.

Had to check.

TANNER: Only three total MLBers with the given first name "Tanner." Roark, Tanner Scheppers (currently pitching for Texas), and Tanner Joe Meyer, who went by Joey while whomping home runs and striking out in the late 80's for Milwaukee.

Note: Was not actually a "future star" at all, as it turned out. Can't win 'em all, Topps.

TYLER: 26 total given first name "Tylers" in MLB history. Only three of them played in the 1900s, and all three of them post-1993 (Tyler Green, Tyler Houston, Ty Van Burkleo).

Re: ...And Whoever's Playing the Nationals

Harper ends the inning with a GIDP.

I think the Nationals hit for their starter, and if so, they're into the bullpen for the top of the 6th.

Ramos smashed a deep homer to left field to tie the game in the bottom of the 7th. 3-3.

I'm gonna have to buy Matt Williams dinner during the off season.

Nats: Lead off double in the 8th. Tries to bunt him over-OUT @3RD!

"When you throw at somebody's head on purpose first pitch, straight out the get-go, then you throw a curveball, then you throw again at the head, that's just ... ," Machado said, using a street term. "You know it's coward stuff. It's just coward."

Manny Machado, most important non-Met to the 2015 Mets.

I actually like the second-to-third bunt play with no outs, as bunt plays go.

Of course, I like it better when the Nats fail to execute it.

Some more clutch hitting by Harper ends it.

I'd like to thank the Orioles for saving the Mets' asses for the past 3 days.

Weren't they supposed to play a double header today as a result of a rainout earlier in the week?

I thought this too. Was it changed or just bad info?

Today (meaning Thursday) was going to be an off day. So they used it for the makeup game.

I miss doubleheaders.

A Cody Asche homer and the Phils are up by 8-2.

And the Mets are now up 6-0.

But 1 is the most important number on line.

I'm with you for today. I would much rather the Mets clinch the playoff spot today with a win over the Reds, than the clincher being due to the Nationals losing.

The only downside is surprise twin 2-game streaks and an off-day clinch in absentia Monday.

Re: ...And Whoever's Playing the Nationals

The game eventually ended (the Nationals clinched second-place) but I'd like to think of Washington as the Howard Jarvis character after the credits in Airplane, sitting and waiting, with the Phillies, in the back of their cab, waiting for the driver to come back and realizing he ain't gonna show.

Bryce Harper said he hopes the Mets win the World Series. His manager managed like he wished that all along.
