IGT #128 Welcome Home David!

Ceetar

This is what it's all about. The captain arrives home to be greeted by an ecstatic packed house of exuberant Mets fans (And some Red Sox stragglers) He should buy us all cookies.

Red Sox rookie Henry Owens (such a Red Sox name isn't it?) versus rested Matt Harvey who I saw a graph today with evidence that he was definitely experiencing some fatigue. Time to get the pitching back on track, because even the Mets won't homer here like they did in those three band boxes on the road.

Whatever happened to Rocco Baldelli? Looked like a star in the making once but iirc beset by some bizarre injury.

Anyway, welcome back Metsies. Sox can put points on the board but that hasn't stopped us lately. Nothing has.

yeah, seems like the Sox an hit but pretty much can't pitch. Let's see if the old 'good pitching beats good hitting' thing holds true this weekend.

(Of course, the Mets will cool eventually and against a last place AL team is pretty much the best place to weather it..and then get hot again in time for Labor Day)

Re: IGT #128 Welcome Home David!

Boston at NY Mets
When: 7:10 PM ET, Friday, August 28, 2015
Where: Citi Field, New York City, New York
SportsDirect Inc.

The New York Mets will look to extend the longest active winning streak in the major leagues when they begin a three-game series against visiting Boston on Friday. A two-run double by Daniel Murphy in the top of the 13th inning helped lift the Mets past Philadelphia on Thursday and gave the first-place club its seventh straight win - all on the road.

That leaves New York - which maintained a 6 1/2-game lead over Washington in the National League East - four victories shy of the team's season-high 11-game win streak. The Red Sox are 3-0-1 in their last four series, averaging 7.2 runs during the slight surge. They give the ball to promising rookie Henry Owens, who dominated Kansas City his last time out, opposite Matt Harvey in an intriguing matchup of former first-round selections. The teams have not met since 2009 and have not played in New York since Boston visited Shea Stadium for three games in 2001.

TV: 7:10 p.m. ET, MLB Network, NESN (Boston), SNY (New York)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Red Sox LH Henry Owens (2-1, 4.50 ERA) vs. Mets RH Matt Harvey (11-7, 2.57)

Owens held the Royals to two runs (one earned) and four hits in eight innings of a 7-2 victory Friday at home. He opened his major-league career earlier this month with back-to-back road starts, allowing four runs in 10 innings. The 23-year-old has held opponents to a .239 average but 10 of their 22 hits have been for extra bases (four home runs, six doubles).

Harvey has won three straight decisions and is 2-0 with a sparkling 0.63 ERA over his last four starts while recording 25 strikeouts against one walk. He has allowed two or fewer runs in seven consecutive home outings with an ERA of 1.11 in that stretch. Only two Red Sox hitters - Pablo Sandoval and Alejandro De Aza - have faced Harvey in the past, combining to go 0-for-7 with four strikeouts.

WALK-OFFS:
1. The Mets homered three times Thursday to establish a new franchise record for home runs in a month (43).
2. Murphy was 3-for-6 on Thursday and is batting .340 with 20 RBIs in 21 games this month.
3. Red Sox DH David Ortiz, who is expected to start at first base at least twice in the series, remains one home run shy of matching Lou Gehrig (493) and Fred McGriff for 27th on the all-time list.

Re: IGT #128 Welcome Home David!

So the just-departed LHP Robbie Ross uses his Jr. designation as does Jackie Bradley Jr on the same team, as does Melvin Upton Jr. now in SD

The one connecting factor with those three is that none of their father were ML players. It seems to me that those used to be the only time you'd see a player use Jr in his playing name a la Ken Griffey or Cal Ripken (Cal Sr coached and managed) but I guess trends change.

Re: IGT #128 Welcome Home David!

2nd night in a row where we've been handed a ton of walks but no hits w/RiSP (until the very end Thursday night) and obviously tonight the GiDPs in the 9th and then in the 10th killed us. Also the first time we've been out-HR'd in a while.
Lack of bullpen depth also hasn't helped but the way to combat that might have been to have Harvey pitch the 7th and Familia pitch a second frame.

Obviously we were bound to lose a game sooner or later, just suxx to do so on a night where our starter tossed a shutout (for at least as long as they let him) and where their staff tried to hand us the game.

Bingo,boingo,boongo.

But I'm not assessing blame. They have a plan, they are sticking to it. Sucks when it burns like that. We aren't going to win 'em all, and the Nats lost. Not a good day at the office but not a bad one either.

Is there anything of interest I should look for if I fast forward through this game? Should I even fast forward through this game?

Almost certainly yes. Problem was that while Harvey was good he wasn't very efficient.

He faced 21 batters in all but required four or more pitches to dispatch with 16 of them and threw five or more to 13 of the 21. That's what pushes a pitch count to 103 in just six innings which is an only marginally efficient total if spread over seven innings and is particularly high for a guy in the midst of giving up just 2 hits and walking 1. So it's like they allowed him seven innings worth of pitches, he just used them all up in the first six.

If we wind up blowing this division lead I do hope that we schedule a CPF group ass-kicking of him.
I mean it's bad enough that he's spent the last year or more hanging out on some super-secret elitist forum talking trash about us. But if he comes back here just in time to blow the whole thing ... man, there's gonna be some hell to pay.

P.S. They've got to do something about that wall behind the wall in CF. Most of the disputed calls in that park involves balls hitting "the black" and coming back onto the field as if they're still in play.
Move it, angle it so as to produce a different bounce, smear it with super-sticky glue so there's no rebound at all, ... something!
