Red Bulls

I'm going to my first Red Bulls game on Saturday - I've never been to a soccer match before.

Any pointers? I don't have any Red Bulls gear - should I just wear a Rutgers shirt? And faux pas I should avoid?

Re: Red Bulls

Come early... to downtown Newark, as that's where the pregame fun is (Bello's or Al Pastor are fun and cheap, but most of the Spanish/Portuguese/rodizio places around there have game-day specials). Reports of game day brawls aside*, the vibe is all pretty convivial (if a little rough around the edges); even the Viking Army "ultras" are pretty welcoming, as long as you're not trying to front.

*My cousin the season-ticket-holder tells me the whole rigamarole began when a phalanx of beer-muscled NYCFC fans began getting cursey-shovey with some younger fans in the downstairs portion of Bello's... without realizing that there were dozens of Red Bulls supporters on the second floor.

Thanks for the tips LWFS.

What's a Viking Army "ultra"?

Re: Red Bulls

I imagine you could go to the game just wearing "street clothes." I don't dress up in costume when I go to a Mets game, and I've been okay.

Re: Red Bulls

Talk in a Scottish accent and beat the hell out of someone in the bleachers. You'll do great.

Re: Red Bulls

That probably won't do well with arena security....

I see that one of the Red Bulls is serving a two game suspension. Is he one of their better players, or a spare part?

Re: Red Bulls

The star players to watch for are Bradley Wright-Phillips and his brother Shaun, both from England. Dax McCarty and Sacha Kljestan have played for the US national team. Lloyd Sam of England is another goal-scorer.

The Red Bulls had the best record in all of MLS in 2013 (which got them an award called the Supporters Shield) but they've never won the MLS Cup.

They lost to the New England Revolution in the Eastern Conference championship last season, and are a distant 2nd place behind DC United this season.

They used to be called the Metro-Stars, which was a truly awful name.

Thanks Willets!

How do the playoffs work in MLS? Second place should be pretty good, right?

The playoffs are extremely generous, top 6 from each conference. So they should get a good seeding and a first-round bye if they hold on.

Almost as awful as Red Bulls

This is the least scenic arena in history....

Pretty much the only scenario where becoming the Red Bulls would be an improvement.

In a contest between a cheap commercial plug for a product of dubious health benefits and a moniker that sounds like a compromise born of focus group blandness, the two names are locked in a two-way tie for last place.

Re: Red Bulls

D-Dad and I had a good time at the game. The Red Bulls won 3-0, despite being down two defensemen (one due to injury, one due to suspension) and the stadium itself is quite nice. But man, you feel like you've endured Mad Max Thunderdome in order to get there - the parking lot is dirt and dust filled and the surrounding area makes Camden look vibrant. I don't think we'll be making a lot of trips up there, but we did have a good time within the confines of the arena.

Re: Red Bulls

But now that the stadium is built it's only a matter of time until the entire area is revitalized!! (lather, rise and repeat over and over until the check clears)

JUST saw this. "Ultras" are die-hard supporters of soccer/football clubs; I was using it semi-tongue-in-cheek-ily here, as the term is most commonly used to denote organized, thuggish groups of European club supporters (think English hooligans like the old Chelsea Headhunters, or the Russian/Soviet-bloc fan groups who lob in-stadium firebombs and proffer race-based chants/boycotts).

Re: Red Bulls

LOL - fortunately there was nothing that bad (except for the walk from our car to the arena - eek!).
