Re: I.G.T. 9/4/15 Mets @ Stonybrook alum

NY Mets at Miami
When: 7:10 PM ET, Friday, September 4, 2015
Where: Marlins Park, Miami, Florida
SportsDirect Inc.

The New York Mets cruise into the final month of the season with a 6 1/2-game lead in the National League East and a schedule that sets up nicely. The Mets will continue their tour of disappointing NL East rivals when they visit the Marlins for the opener of a three-game series.

New York took two of three from last-place Philadelphia to end its homestand and will sandwich series at Miami and Atlanta around a showdown at Washington on the 10-game trip. The Mets should be happy to hit the road after pounding out 73 runs while finishing off their last road trip with seven straight wins. The Marlins, who were swept in a three-game set at New York from Aug. 3-5, come in with some momentum after outscoring the Atlanta Braves 18-4 in a three-game sweep. Tom Koehler will try to keep that run of strong pitching going and end a string of seven straight losing decisions when he goes up against Mets All-Star Jacob deGrom on Friday.

TV: 7:10 p.m. ET, SNY (New York), FSN Florida (Miami)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Mets RH Jacob deGrom (12-7, 2.32 ERA) vs. Marlins RH Tom Koehler (8-13, 4.12)

DeGrom struggled through illness at Philadelphia on Aug. 24 and was lit up for six earned runs in 2 2/3 innings but bounced back with a solid start on Saturday. He struck out 10 and allowed two runs and four hits in six innings but suffered the loss to Boston in a 3-1 final. The 27-year-old deGrom is facing Miami for the second time this season and picked up a win by scattering six hits over seven scoreless innings at home against the Marlins on Apr. 18.

Koehler has been reached for at least five earned runs in four of his last seven starts. The New York native is trying to bounce back after surrendering five runs on nine hits – three home runs – in six innings at Washington on Saturday. Koehler was ripped for seven runs – six earned – on seven hits and three walks in 4 1/3 innings in a loss to the Mets on Aug. 3.

WALK-OFFS:
1. Marlins RF Giancarlo Stanton (broken hamate bone) could return to the team this weekend.
2. Mets INF Daniel Murphy left Wednesday’s game with discomfort in his left quad and is day-to-day.
3. New York rookie OF Michael Conforto is 6-for-10 in his last three games.

Re: I.G.T. 9/4/15 Mets @ Stonybrook alum

I don't want to crush him. That's no way to treat someone. We should just let him know that even if he's not very good at baseball, he's still a good person, and there are probably lots of other things he could do really well. Like, I don't know, making appliqué seahorses, or playing tuba in an oom-pah band. We'll find something.

Murph is hobbled. Cuddyer is mostly starting against lefties these days. Wilmer was expected back with the team this evening, but I expect Terry doesn't want to throw him out there right away.

So they're going with Johnson at first, who I'd probably put at number five on the depth chart over there.

Wright second and Cespedes third is a treat. Put Duda between 'em and watch the thunda.

On the positive side: efficient pitch count for deGrom. Thru the first three averaging < 12 pitches/per
Far too often lately our guys have been running up high counts even when they've been giving up very few hits & runs. deGrom, Harvey, and Syndergaard all have been guilty of this in recent starts.

Meanwhile, the Out of Town Scoreboard shows the Nat and Braves tied at 1. Atlanta has the bases loaded with one out. I'm hoping for a few Atlanta hits to break this one open.

Upon edit: Friggin infield pop up leaves the bases juiced, but now with 2 outs. Followed by a ground out to second base to end the threat. Still tied at 1.

Re: I.G.T. 9/4/15 Mets @ Stonybrook alum

I just watched the end again and I can't hang this on uh-O'Flaherty. He came in and got a big out and I thought he looked good against Prado, until Prado does what he does, which is hit well. He got him 0-2, then picked away until it was full. The payoff pitch was not a bad one.

Mex hit the nail on the head. If Johnson was guarding the line, and maybe even playing a normal first base, that's an out.

That sucks because we really needed to see a good outing from the lad. I kinda think we did. He was spotting his fastball and had some movement. He certainly didn't look as bad as he has.

Me too. What was he thinking? Terry's bullpen decisions will make me crazy if I let them. Extra-inning road games seem to be especially maddening. If the Mets are playing in October I may have to watch with my eyes closed.

What he was thinking was that the Marlins had 3 LHBs in the next 4 hitters and the winning run was already on base.
I said in the thread that I would have stuck with Goeddel but of course he was the guy who put the winning run there in the first place and gave up hits to 2 of the 6 batters he faced so it's not like that was a sure thing either. Nor was it like the rest of the pen was in shutdown mode: Gilmartin: 2 batters/2 hits; Reed: 5 batters, 2 hits/1 BB
Robles pitched a perfect 8th but it seems to me that if Terry had stuck with him after the Mets tied it up rather than go to Clippard then we'd be complaining about that.

I'd argue that the move to make would have been to bring Clippard back for a 2nd inning after his 1-hit/10-pitch 8th since you weren't forced to take him out via a PH move. Then you'd play it by ear after that.
The Nats, after mgr Williams took a bunch of heat for not using Storen & Papelbon enough or correctly, used Papelbon for two innings last night and he wound up being the winning pitcher even after giving up singles to his first two hitters. But they also had the advantage of being at home and not being burdened by that 'Save the Closer' thing. It also makes your bullpen mgmt look better when your offense scores 1 in the 9th then 3 more in the 10th.
