IGT 09/05 - Mets at Fish - Fried or Grilled?

GAME: New York Mets (74-60) at Miami Marlins (56-79)
DATE/TIME: Saturday, September 05 - 7:10 PM EST
WHERE: Marlins Park, Miami, Florida
LINE: -142, 131 TOTAL: 8
Covers Media Group Ltd

The New York Mets are trying to determine the best way to proceed down the stretch with their young pitchers, and wrapping up the National League East as soon as possible would certainly allow them to get some rest. The Mets will try to get back to the process of doing that when they visit the Marlins for the second of a three-game series on Saturday.

New York lost a game in the standings and the first contest of the series when it dropped a 6-5 decision in 11 innings to the Marlins as the Washington Nationals were beating Atlanta in extra innings on Friday. The Mets, who now own a five-game lead in the NL East, are in a public dispute with agent Scott Boras over the best way to handle right-hander Matt Harvey’s workload and have a plan for all of their young pitchers as the team anticipates a deep run into October. The Marlins have no October plans but are winners of four straight and will help decide the East with 12 more games against New York and Washington. Miami attempts to steal the series behind left-hander Brad Hand while the Mets counter with a right-hander with no workload concerns – veteran Bartolo Colon.

TV: 7:10 p.m. ET, WPIX (New York), FSN Florida (Miami)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Mets RH Bartolo Colon (12-11, 4.42 ERA) vs. Marlins LH Brad Hand (4-4, 4.54)

Colon is moving up in the rotation as New York gives rookie Noah Syndergaard some extra rest down the stretch. Colon is riding a string of 16 straight scoreless innings after striking out nine and allowing four hits in eight scoreless innings to beat Philadelphia on Monday. The hefty veteran was nearly as strong at Miami on Aug. 3, yielding one run and seven hits in eight frames to pick up the win.

Hand had a string out two straight wins come to an end at Washington on Sunday, when he was knocked around for five runs and eight hits in 4 2/3 innings. The 25-year-old had allowed a total of three runs in 14 frames over his previous two outings. Hand tossed four scoreless innings against New York on Aug. 4, scattering five hits and a walk while striking out three.

WALK-OFFS:
1. Mets 1B Daniel Murphy (quad) received a platelet-rich plasma injection on Thursday and is expected to sit at least through Saturday.
2. Miami 3B Martin Prado went 5-for-6 in the opener and is 10-for-18 with five RBIs and four runs scored in the last four games.
3. New York OF Michael Cuddyer (wrist tendinitis) sat out Friday and is day-to-day.

Prado always seems to hurt the Mets, no matter where he's played. I have no numbers to back this up, just my gut feeling, as I am incapable of gathering such arcane statistics.

If I ever decide to shut down the UMDB, it will probably be because Baseball Reference has rendered it superfluous.

Colon vs. Hand. I think we've seen this matchup before. I seem to remember a recent "battle of the body parts."

Or maybe I'm thinking of Rectum vs. Spleen.

We had Niese (knees) and Hand earlier this year, but I don't think Colon and Hand have squared off as starters this season.

Hand did take the loss out of the bullpen against Colon back in April.

No worries. Both Eric Young and Eric Campbell are in the lineup.

Juan Lagares - CF
David Wright - 3B
Yoenis Cespedes - LF
Juan Uribe - 2B
Travis d'Arnaud - C
Wilmer Flores - SS
Eric Campbell - 1B
Eric Young Jr. - RF
Bartolo Colon - RHP

By utilizing all his resources, TC is showing confidence in his entire team, yet another reason they continue to keep pulling together and winning.

Or he's a fucking idiot with this lineup. I guess we'll see.

Yeah...I'm unfortunately leaning a bit towards the latter.
I have no problem with giving people days off and using subs in the lineup; but I don't think it's a great idea to be doing that with two lineup spots in the same game.

Re: IGT 09/05 - Mets at Fish - Fried or Grilled?

Campbell reflects the idea that the 1st, 2nd, & 3rd options at 1B (Duda, Murphy, Cuddyer) are, in some fashion or another, unavailable, and that the LH starter for the other side makes Terry opt out of option #4 (Johnson)

Young in RF is part the LHP coupled w/Grandy's general ineptness against them, and also probably the idea that you can't ask a guy to hit for you if you never give him any ABs.
The oddest part about him being stuck in RF is Cespedes's unwillingness to play there. Lagares was put in RF last night after a double switch because Cespedes is reportedly uncomfortable there from never playing it. He also frustrated the BoSox last year by refusing to play there. Tough to see how RF is being treated as if a completely different animal.

Last night and today when they show the outfield shots at this
stadium I've been struck that the crazy loud green paint color
reminds me of something. It just hit me, that was the color of
our kitchen paint in the early 70's! Eeeek.

7-0 through two.

That's two straight nights that you have posted your displeasure with Ichiro. Last night he wasn't even in the game. Just curious, but what did Ichiro ever do to you (or the Mets) to invoke such hostility?

The never-winning Shelby Miller not doing us any favors down in DC. After cruising through the first two innings he gave up a bushel of two-out hits in the 3rd including another Bryce Harper HR and it's 4-0 Nationals in the 4th.

He pinch hit yesterday. And it's a longstanding thing, actually discussed here several times.

It goes back to his Mariners days, and the pukarific adoration he insisted upon, including his own store in the stadium, his refusal to ever admit that he didn't need a translator for interviews, etc.

Bartolo Colon giving the Mets a great outing and providing a much needed day of rest tfor the bullpen. Harvey may not be willing to pitch in the postseason, but Colon appears willing to do anything to help the team. While the young arms are getting skipped in the rotation to allow them some rest, Colon keeps taking his turn and even helped witha an inning out of the bullpen between starts.

Went looking for this play and I found this mostly wonderful tribute video set to a song about Staub (with perhaps too many minor chords). The catch comes around 2:10. He makes the shoestring catch in fair territory, and his momentum takes him to the rail, and into the arms of his adoring fans.

It ends with footage from Rusty Staub Day.
