deGrom had a clunker followed by a quality start, trending in the right direction is there any real doubt he's going to sling some sort of 2-hit 8IP 12K marvel?

Re: IGT Wed 9/9 deGrom and deBrooms?

GAME: New York Mets (77-61) at Washington Nationals (71-67)
DATE/TIME: Wednesday, September 09 - 7:05 PM EST
WHERE: Nationals Park, Washington, District of Columbia
LINE: 106, -115 TOTAL: 7.5
Covers Media Group Ltd.

After overcoming a six-run deficit in stunning fashion, the New York Mets look to further dim the lights on the Washington Nationals' postseason aspirations when the National League East rivals play the finale of the three-game set on Wednesday. Winners of 13 of their last 18 contests, the Mets increased their lead over the second-place Nationals to six games with 24 remaining on the schedule.

Yoenis Cespedes, who has five homers during a seven-game hitting streak, atoned for a three-run miscue in the field with a three-run double in Tuesday's 8-7 triumph. David Wright has recorded seven multi-hit performances in 12 contests since returning from spinal stenosis surgery and is 6-for-19 in his career versus Wednesday starter Stephen Strasburg. New York has won nine of its 15 meetings with Washington this season, including five of eight at Nationals Park. Yunel Escobar is doing his best to keep Washington within shouting distance, going 16-for-34 with six runs scored in September and enters Wednesday's contest with a career 5-for-10 mark versus starter Jacob deGrom.

TV: 7:05 p.m. ET, ESPN, SNY (New York), MASN2 (Washington)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Mets RH Jacob deGrom (12-7, 2.40 ERA) vs. Nationals RH Stephen Strasburg (8-6, 4.35)

DeGrom saw his winless stretch extend to three outings despite recording a quality start in a no-decision versus Miami on Friday. The 27-year-old allowed three runs on a season-high nine hits in six innings and did not walk a batter against the Marlins. DeGrom rebounded after losing a pair of April starts versus Washington to permit two runs on three hits in a 7-2 triumph on July 21 before tossing six strong innings in a no-decision against the Nationals on Aug. 1.

Strasburg, who has been bothered by a balky back, has been given the go-ahead to start against the Mets after working through an intense bullpen session on Sunday. The 27-year-old has won five of his last six decisions, but yielded four runs on seven hits in four innings against Miami in his last start on Aug. 30. Strasburg has split a pair of outings versus New York, getting blitzed for six runs in 5 1/3 innings in a 6-3 setback on April 9 before tossing 5 1/3 strong frames in an 8-2 win three weeks later.

WALK-OFFS:
1. Washington 1B Ryan Zimmerman, who sat out Tuesday's tilt with a mild oblique injury, is batting .435 with six homers and 18 RBIs during his 11-game hitting streak.
2. New York 2B Daniel Murphy is 0-for-9 in his last three contests.
3. Nationals OF Bryce Harper is 0-for-8 with four strikeouts in the series.

How disappointing.

It's passing strange to keep in looking at the evening's lineup and think that they #3 batter isn't looking all that impressively better than the #8 batter.

But, you know, in a good way.

Instead Zimmerman gets a 2nd day off (sore oblique I believe is the culprit), Michael Taylor and his Little League HR sits down, as does Yunel Escobar who had three hits last night but also the game-ending GiDP

I think it's also Matt Williams' way of getting as many LHBs into the lineup as possible -- Robinson plus the SH Espinosa because they normally just have Harper.

Re: IGT Wed 9/9 deGrom and deBrooms?

Strasburg is pitching an absolute gem thus far. His curve is devastating, particularly in combination with his fastball. When a pitcher can spot an arsenal like that, he is almost unhittable. Someone (for the Mets) has to catch up to a fastball early in the count. Either that or we have to hope that Williams makes some totally idiotic move, which we know he is capable of doing, and pulls Strasburg for some bizarre reason.

Good inning and good outing by deGrom. It's up to the offense to step up and pull this one out.

If you're Rendon and you bunt there as the tying run with just 4 outs left in this game (if not your season) you have to be prepared to steal (IMO) right afterward.
And, if not, thankyouverymuch for your strategy seeing as how you're coming off a season with 66 XBHs

Re: IGT Wed 9/9 deGrom and deBrooms?

Strasburg was really looking incredible for the bulk of the game, but I was keeping an eye on his pitch count. It remained fairly low for a while (I can't find an inning-by-inning breakdown) but it eventually creeped up to the 100-pitch mark. I was hoping it would get to 100 before the 8th inning so that we'd see the Washington bullpen all the earlier. That didn't quite happen, but the end result was what I was looking for/hoping for.

I was just about certain that Cespedes would hit a home run. I haven't had that feeling about a Mets player, I don't think, since Darryl Strawberry during some of his hotter streaks.

The world is "to," Paulie.

And I seem to remember you signing with Washington, bragging about how you were excited for the opportunity to have 18 games to make the Mets pay for their poor judgement in not re-signing you. Maybe that was someone else, you bandwagon-jumper.

Just incredible. Strasburg looked on his way to a 15-k complete game, I left for a run and they'd taken the lead before I'd gotten 10 blocks. We couldn't have demoralized that team any more than if Terry went up into the stands and banged Matt Williams wife while the game was going on.

Back in August, it struck me that the Nationals sounded a lot like the 1969 Cubs. "We're not panicking." "Just wait until that final series."

There are actually three Mrs. Matt Williamses out there.

Interesting fact: Matt Williams' grandfather played six games for the 1924 Washington Senators, the only World Series winner in DC history.

Yankees lose so we get the TH. Blue Jays don't cooperate, however.

Dodgers losing to the Angels in Anaheim. A loss puts the Mets within two games of 'em.

Victory by Texas over Houston pulls them within 3 1/2 of the Yankees. Minnesota tied with KC in extras, trying to pul within 5 1/2.

Strasburg pitches: 10, 11, 12, 17, 13, 14, 14, then 12 in his partial 8th inning.
Normally pitches would like to stay at or below 15/per which, if he threw the 'max', would put him at 90 after 6 or 105 thru 7
But Strasburg last night was not only on his way to a 15-K night but was doing so at a work load that put him about an inning below that standard, only 77 after 6 / 91 after 7, making him a prime candidate for CG territory without even hitting 120. But needing 12 pitches to get just one out in the 8th I guess spooked Williams enough to go to the pen (not that this means the pitch count was the only factor).

Re: IGT Wed 9/9 deGrom and deBrooms?

"Why not try?" - was Terry's answer as to why he put Kelly Johnson up to hit for Wilmer.

He hadn't liked how Flores had looked good in his previous ABs (pop to SS, fly to CF) vs Strasburg so he essentially 'played a hunch'. Johnson said that hitting the curve was pretty much out of the question so, after Strasburg started him off 2-0, he was sitting fastball and was reasonably sure he was going to get one.

I don't know. Cespedes is playing great. Our top player. But there's a lot going on beyond beast mode. I mean Kelly Johnson.

I just don't want to get caught up too much in the monster narrative, lest any notion permeate the culture that the team will crash as soon as Cespedes levels off.

Duda was carrying the team into the Cespedes acquisition.

A big part of September just became getting and keeping Duda, Wright, Cuddyer and Murphy healthy (and everyone else too obviously)

It's going to be fun to watch d'Arnaud and Conforto hit back to back for many years.

I just hope that this doesn't prevent the Mets from getting a middle of the order guy for next year, whether it's Cespedes or someone meant to offset him.

Re: IGT Wed 9/9 deGrom and deBrooms?

Yeah, if Cespedes vanishes they'll need to import a bopper. Conforto playing regularly will, I think, offset some of the loss of Cespedes, but I still think they'll need to bring someone in. And trading Matt Harvey may be the way to do it.

I'd rather keep Harvey and need less runs than risk trying to find a power guy. power guys are hard to find that aren't one dimensional and often marginalized by Citi Field.

Certainly, if Conforto is able to hit lefties, he could be an excellent help. When we focus on next year, it's still MI that is the priority i would think.

Yes. Someone with reasonable power would be nice.

But then they'll need another pitcher. Wheeler won't be back until the second half, barring any setbacks. So you'll have deGrom, Syndegaard, Matz, Niese (if he gets his act together) and a mystery fifth starter. Do you take the risk of bringing back Colon in his age-43 year? You get the feeling he wouldn't mind.

Still waiting for the coffee to kick in.

But you're right, so to follow up on something I said earlier.

Do we start Conforto more against lefties to see how he does the rest of the month?

I'm of the belief that Cuddyer is still a valuable and good hitter, and if he's still healthy you play him, but it'd be nice to see if you have to pull Conforto against lefties in the 6th or whatever.

If the Mets win the World Series, they should consider voting for a share of winnings to Storen.
