There is plenty of chatter surrounding the New York Mets’ offensive assault on opposing pitchers since the start of August, but strong pitching – from both the rotation and the bullpen – continues to bolster New York’s postseason chances. Jon Niese takes his turn Sunday as the Mets try to finish a four-game sweep at the Atlanta Braves, looking to continue New York’s excellence on the mound. New York’s starters own a 3.45 ERA on the season, and its bullpen had allowed only one run over an 18-inning span until Adonis Garcia’s three-run homer off Tyler Clippard tied Saturday’s contest at 4 in the eighth inning -- a game the Mets rallied to win 6-4. New York has won six straight and Yoenis Cespedes keeps hitting homers, belting his eighth in the past 11 games Saturday and his 16th in 39 games with the Mets. Atlanta, meanwhile, lost for the 23rd time in its past 26 games and has dropped 11 in a row at home, the longest home losing skid since the franchise moved to Atlanta in 1966. Andrelton Simmons has enjoyed facing New York pitching this season, hitting .463 in 15 games. TV: 1:35 p.m. ET, SNY (New York), FSN South (Atlanta) PITCHING MATCHUP: Mets LH Jon Niese (8-10, 4.36 ERA) vs. Braves RH Ryan Idontknow (0-1, 3.00) Niese needs an impressive finish to earn a spot on the Mets’ playoff rotation, and the eight-year veteran has not helped his odds with two rough showings in September. He allowed six runs on seven hits in five innings Sept. 1 in a loss to Philadelphia, and gave up five runs on seven hits against Washington on Monday -- a game New York rallied to win. Niese had posted a 2.81 ERA across eight starts from July 1 to Aug. 15, but has surrendered 23 runs on 30 hits in 19 2/3 innings in his past four starts. Weber made his major-league debut Tuesday in Philadelphia and pitched well in defeat, giving up two runs on four hits in six innings with one walk and two strikeouts. The 25-year-old went 6-5 with a 2.35 ERA between Double-A Mississippi and Triple-A Gwinnett this season. Weber won his final two starts at Gwinnett before being promoted, giving up two runs on five hits in 11 innings. WALK-OFFS: 1. The Braves turned four double plays Saturday, moving past the Pirates and into the major-league lead with 161 on the season. 2. New York RHP Jeurys Familia recorded his 40th save Saturday, tying Billy Wagner for third on the franchise’s single-season list. 3. Mets C Travis d’Arnaud is hitting .424 with eight RBIs in 10 games this month after collecting three hits Saturday.

Coming in to the Washington series, the Nats swept four from the Braves while the Mets lost two of three to Miami. After that series, vice versa. I like the symmetry of that.

This may be the first game all year (except for the game I attended at Citi Field in June) where I watched the entire game, from beginning to end, entirely in real time. I've been in the habit of recording the game on my TiVo and starting my viewing 30 to 60 minutes after the game has started. I missed being able to fast-forward through the commercials, but it was a helluva game!

It wasn't quite a classic game in that it lacked both top-shelf play and that sense of 'must have' urgency given our recently assumed big division lead - but the back and forth tug-o-war and the pulling of their collective ass out of the fire aspects of it were certainly entertaining. And, hey, when the Braves were sucking wind vs the Nats two weeks back a lot of us here moaned that they better do the same for us. Well folks, they did. Now my only question remains, if they were unable to lose this game, what kind of game is it going to take for them to lose?

Can the Mets approach MLB about the scoring in this game? Or do they just let that slide. How many errors were called hits? 4? Home team scoring can have an edge, but you can't outright cheat and call those things hits.

They can and teams sometimes do just that although scorers are not required to change their original calls. And of course pleasing one player by changing a call might piss off another. How many errors were called hits? 4? Home team scoring can have an edge, but you can't outright cheat and call those things hits. There were only two called errors: Murphy's & Uribe's. But it's tough, or at best a toss-up, to argue that the Niese to Duda play* was an 'E', or Granderson's missed slide in RF, or Tejada's bobble since they got an out anyway, or Murph's jump throw combined with Duda's failed scoop, or Tejada in the hole where he's probably not throwing the guy out anyway, or Duda's missed pop in the sun and the wind as he was never really under it. Sometimes it's just one of those days. But the good thing is that these days, even when it is one of those days, we win anyway. * and, Geez, how many cheesy hits did Markakis get today? The whole Braves team really but him especially. 13 Atlanta hits in all but all were singles: about 3 or 4 of them were in the infield plus several more bloops

Was out and just watched the 8th, 9th and 10th. Well, that was crazy. It was almost like Terry was trying to throw them a bone by sitting Wright, Cespedes, d'Arnoud, not pitching the regulars, fielding that was referred to. Keith's "analysis" during the 9th and 10th was priceless.

It's long-standing tradition, but it doesn't make sense that mis-judged flies are scored as hits.

I had a "you can't win 'em all" & "we'll start a new streak tomorrow" speech all lined up.

Anyway, if you argue for your pitcher, to get earned runs turned into unearned runs, you're also arguing that your fielder should be charged with an error. It's better not to go there.

It happens, though, usually when a team wants a pitcher to get credited with a no-hitter, or some milestone, or simply wants his record cleaned of runs that shouldn't happen to him. And really, what's one error on a player's record, compared to three runs on a pitcher's? Any decent teammate of a fielder would give that to his pitcher every time.

I was listening to the game while in my hammock (yes, that is pretty much where I live these days) and I TURNED IT OFF with 2 outs in the ninth. A friend texted me 'LOL!!', I texted back 'what?' And he told me Murphy tied it. I listened to the rest of it but DAMN this team! When is it safe to turn the friggin' game off??!!
