Re: IGT Fri 9/18 - Take Back New York!

GAME: New York Yankees (80-65) at New York Mets (83-63)
DATE/TIME: Friday, September 18 - 7:10 PM EST
WHERE: Citi Field, New York City, New York
LINE: N/A TOTAL: N/A
Covers Media Group, Ltd.

The New York Mets continue their march toward the National League East title when they host the New York Yankees in a three-game series beginning Friday. The Mets' magic number to clinch their first division crown since 2006 sits at nine while the Yankees are a comfortable 5 1/2 games clear of a wild-card spot and 3 1/2 behind runaway leader Toronto in the American League East.

The fact that both teams appear headed to the postseason has the Big Apple excited to the core in what eventually could become the first subway World Series since 2000. "You walk around the city and you either see the pinstripes or the Mets hats, and that gets you fired up before you even get to the stadium," Mets third baseman David Wright told reporters. "The crowd gets into it. New York gets into it. It's good for the city." Yoenis Cespedes, who has 17 home runs and 42 RBIs in 43 games since joining the Mets at the trade deadline, makes his Subway Series debut. Mets rookie left-hander and nearby Long Island native Steven Matz faces the Yankees for the first time and opposes Masahiro Tanaka, who has won three straight decisions.

TV: 7:10 p.m. ET, MLB Network, YES (Yankees), WPIX (Mets)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Yankees RH Masahiro Tanaka (12-6, 3.40 ERA) vs. Mets LH Steven Matz (3-0, 1.88)

Tanaka struck out seven and allowed four hits in seven innings of a 5-0 victory over Toronto on Sunday, keeping the Yankees' faint division hopes alive as he continues to pitch with a small tear in his ulnar collateral ligament. The 26-year-old native of Japan, who makes consecutive starts on four days rest for the first time this season, is 25-11 in 42 starts. Tanaka's only appearance in the Subway Series came last season, when he pitched a four-hitter and struck out eight in a 4-0 victory at Citi Field on May 14 for the first of his four career complete games.

Matz exited his last start after five innings because of a blister, but is cleared to pitch Friday. The 24-year-old allowed one run and six hits of a 5-1 victory in Atlanta on Saturday in his second start since returning from the disabled list (torn lat). Matz, who has recorded 22 strikeouts and allowed 17 hits in 24 innings, makes his fifth career start and second at Citi Field after defeating Cincinnati 7-2 there in his major-league debut June 28.

WALK-OFFS:
1. Cespedes is 2-for-13 - two home runs - with six strikeouts in his last five games.
2. Yankees DB Alex Rodriguez has 3,061 hits, 2,052 RBIs and 1,998 runs scored and needs two runs to join Hank Aaron (3,771 hits, 2,297 RBIs, 2,174 runs) as the only players in history with at least 3,000 hits, 2,000 RBIs and 2,000 runs scored.
3. The Yankees won two of three versus the Mets in April and lead the all-time series 62-44, including 4-1 in the 2000 World Series.

Re: IGT Fri 9/18 - Take Back New York!

That was a huge hit coming so early in the game because Tanaka looked like he was headed for six outs on about 15 pitches prior to that - as opposed to Matz who needed nearly 50.
Now if we can just avoid giving up shitty hits to the Yanx we may be OK here.

Put it up there at the beginning of the AB and then get rid of it, particularly if there's nothing unusual about the alignment.

The Mets offense now puts themselves in a position to get those gift runs. Earlier in the year we infrequently had runners at third base to take advantage of balks and wild pitches. The vastly improved and much deeper offense puts far more pressure on pitchers and the defense which often leads to the mistakes that turn into runs. It's nice when the opposition helps your offense out, but the Mets now are pressuring teams into making unforced errors.

There's a little kid in a Mets cap in the first row booing ARod with all his heart as we walks by. Sweet.

Fittingly it was on a Dee Gordon Sac Fly
As least we know he isn't just picking on us.

Headed to bottom 9, still tied.

That would have been the dumbest move of the night had he run there, not just because of Cespedes's arm but the situation.

And now I think I'll have a drink!!

Re: IGT Fri 9/18 - Take Back New York!

This game feels like the first one from the last Nationals series in that winning the opener means that the series is already disaster proof and the odds of a sweep are no worse than a 2-1 series loss.
Ahh, the benefit of playing from ahead.

Still and all, that was a waste of a lot of Familia pitches in a four-run game.

Robles & Reed threw fewer pitches combined to dispose of two innings than Familia did for just one.
Bottom line: If it comes down to a close late-inning game tomorrow the Yanx pen has a big advantage with both Bettances & Miller all cleaned and pressed. And it'll be even moreso if Clippard isn't available.

That's exactly what I was thinking. Instead, Familia threw 26 pitches that he didn't need to throw.

Two things.

1- He hadn't pitched since Monday.
2- When Terry got him up it was a save situation. And Terry puts him in when he's warmed up regardless. (Rightly or wrongly, that's his M.O.)

Re: IGT Fri 9/18 - Take Back New York!

His M.O. threatens to cost the Mets games, maybe. And games are dear things.

Or maybe, warming up is the same as getting into a game nine times out of ten, and I dunno what I'm talking about.

Re: IGT Fri 9/18 - Take Back New York!

It would have made much more sense to give Addison Reed the ninth. He only threw eight pitches in the eighth inning and he was looking good. With Clippard unavailable on Friday, and I assume possibly on Saturday, Familia should have been held back. (I would have given Reed the ninth even if the score had remained 4-1, by the way.)

Terry should ditch this M.O. I can't imagine that warming up a bit and then sitting down is the same as warming up a bit and then throwing 26 pitches in a game situation.

Re: IGT Fri 9/18 - Take Back New York!

While that's certainly true, and I would have stuck with Reed — it's certainly the way I play it in computer and card games, with everybody in my bullpen getting a chance at a save now and then — I'm certain that at the time Terry made the choice, he didn't intend for Familia to throw 26 pitches.
