Niese vs hard luck Shelby Miller. The Braves are 60-90 and generally suck a great big garbage bag full of dicks these days. I'm hoping my recent IGT lucky streak can once again kick in here and get this thing moving. Hopefully in the next two weeks the Mets can win four games and the Nats can lose four. That doesn't seem so unreasonable, does it?

The trick for the New York Mets this week will be finding a way to keep the momentum going with three losing teams coming up on the schedule. The Mets, who finished an emotional Subway Series against the New York Yankees on Sunday, will continue the business of wrapping up the National League East when they host the Atlanta Braves in the opener of a three-game series on Monday. The Mets enter the week six games ahead of second-place Washington with 13 games to play and would like to take care of clinching the division against the likes of Atlanta, Cincinnati and Philadelphia before closing the regular season against the Nationals. The Mets will have to recover quickly after watching the bullpen implode following an early exit by ace Matt Harvey in Sunday night’s 11-2 loss to the Yankees. Atlanta assured itself of another week out of the division basement by taking three straight 2-1 decisions from the Phillies over the weekend. The Braves will try to keep up that run of strong pitching performances behind Shelby Miller, while New York turns to Jon Niese on Monday. TV: 7:10 p.m. ET, SportSouth (Atlanta), SNY (New York) PITCHING MATCHUP: Braves RH Shelby Miller (5-15, 3.00 ERA) vs. Mets LH Jon Niese (8-10, 4.31) Miller can make an easy claim as the unluckiest pitcher in the majors at this point as he leads the league with 15 losses. The 24-year-old Texan is 0-14 with a 3.68 ERA in 22 starts since securing his last win on May 17 and finally appears to be slowing down with 13 earned runs allowed in 14 innings this month. Miller’s lone quality start in September came against the Mets on Sept. 10, when he held the club to three runs in six frames but still suffered a loss. Niese bounced back from a string of terrible outings by limiting Atlanta to three runs – two earned – and eight hits in six innings without factoring in the decision on Sept. 13. The 28-year-old was rocked for a total of 23 runs in 19 2/3 frames over his previous four outings. Niese is 8-6 with a 3.23 ERA in 21 career starts against the Braves. WALK-OFFS: 1. Mets OF Yoenis Cespedes is 1-for-19 with seven strikeouts over his last five games. 2. Braves RH Mike Foltynewicz spent the weekend hospitalized due to blood clots in his right arm and is undergoing further evaluation. 3. Atlanta’s next loss will be its 91st, marking the most for the franchise since the 1990 squad went 65-97.

Reviewing replay, it looks like Murphy forgot how many outs there were, as he never ran towards third base and instead just was standing there on the infield.

Re: what G K & R are discussing -- There's a quote floating out there somewhere about the new generation of players playing only for money, etc. It was spoken by Ty Cobb in the '20s. Which isn't to say that the topic they're discussing is meaningless, but the idea that the attitude just changed with the present crop is as old as the game itself.

I think I saw some 'get him out on a high note, get the good relievers in' notes on Niese. That might just be the public comments though.

The problem with the "assumed the DP" theory is that he saw the failed exchange and celebrated it. At the point of celebration, he seems to then have either forgotten he was on the base paths, or failed to realize that he wasn't the player who was put out. I saw Granderson double back after the failed transfer to be certain he touched home plate. So clearly he was concerned he also assumed too much and had forgot to take care of business as well. It would have been a real disaster if he actually hadn't initially touched the plate and Murphy got tagged before he doubled back.

I assumed Muffy was applauding that a run scored. My read is that he wrongly assumed he'd been forced out and momentarily stopped being a baseball player and sort of became a spectator.

I'm not surprised that he thought that, but a little surprised that he actually said it. I think, even with that thought, I would have let Niese pitch until he gave up a baserunner. If the lead was greater than two runs, I might have allowed him two baserunners. I'd want to let him keep eating up outs for as long as he could.

It's the third inning Terry ought to be worried about, not the seventh. Once Niese got out of his usual third-inning jam last night, he was fine. Strategically, I'm okay with bringing in Reed, but psychologically I don't know. Niese can't be happy, and Terry's looking a little panicky. It's a little weird how consistently Niese has been blowing up in the third. That's usually when he faces the top of the order again, which is probably a big part of it. But it hasn't been a pattern for him before this year. Maybe Terry could stash him out in right field and have Carlos Torres or somebody pitch just that inning.

Yeah, it's not the number of the inning that's the problem, it's that small things seem to turn into big things and that one big inning -- whichever one it is -- is enough to ruin an otherwise good day for him. Last night it certainly looked like it would be the 3rd after his 8 straight groundouts were followed by an inexplicable 4-pitch/2-out walk to a sub-.100 hitting pitcher. That was then followed by a ground single by Bourn which was different than all the previous grounders only in that it became a 'tweener', and then by the error by Flores at which point Freeman is suddenly up with the bases loaded even though none of the first 12 batters hit the ball even remotely hard. That Freddie's knuckling liner to CF found Cespedes's glove was as fortunate as the previous three batters had been unfortunate but that hasn't been the way things have gone for Niese lately.

The thing is, if he starts to unravel early in the game, there's a temptation to try to get him to work through it, because you don't want to go to the bullpen in the third inning. But if it's the seventh or eighth inning, you can pull him before things get too nasty.
