2016 Schedule

For what may be the first time in history, the two World Series teams will open against each other, as the Mets head to Kansas City, opening on the road, and in another league.

Hosting Phillie for the home opener, April 8.

I heard the Mets plan to pitch Harvey the first three games of the season.

Counting on MGiM for that series in Detroit.

Yes, but it means Studly McAceman gets to start games one and three.

At least it would if this was a video game.

Re: 2016 Schedule

Last time Mets neither opened nor closed a 162-game regular season at home: 1984.

These things can change along the way. In 1994, Mets opened in Chicago and prematurely closed in Philadelphia due to strike. In 1999, Mets opened in Miami and closed the scheduled portion of their regular season at Shea, but then had a tiebreaker to take care of Cincy, which was, technically, their last regular-season game. In 2001, Mets were scheduled to open and close in Atlanta, but because of the postponement of a week's worth of games after 9/11, they ended their season at Shea.

So anything can happen, but 2016 -- open in KC, close in Philly -- is shaping up as 32-year first.

I love it when Adam Rubin plays the part of troll:

#Mets probables:
April 4 at KC: deGrom
April 6 at KC: Matz
April 8 vs. PHL: Syndergaard

That'll be fun.

first time teams of ANY World Series opened a season was 1999 when the '82 loser Brewers opened in St. Louis.

This season the Phillies and Red Sox reprised 1915. (which I have to assume someone noticed right? 100 years?)

Means it's easier to keep the 5th guy down for a DH. :-D

The Mets' website (erroneously?) lists the dates against the Tigers as home games for the Mets.

wishful thinking? If they were it'd be 21 consecutive days in NY for the Mets.

Re: 2016 Schedule

I like the four game weekend series in Milwaukee...though I'm not sure that interests anyone but me.

I'm planning a trip to NYC in late August or early September, so I'm likely to see one (or more) of the divisional games during the 8/26-9/4 homestand.

I'm kinda bummed that both the White Sox and Twins go to Citi this time...I'd travel to either one of those series if the Mets were on the road.

Cleveland avoids Flushing for the twelfth consecutive regular season. Longest such streak (dating to 2004), now that Blue Jays and Red Sox have made trips.

Looks almost certain our 2016 road trip goes thru Chicago in July.

Re: 2016 Schedule

ESPN can pick a game to move to Sunday night as the season opener. I wouldn't be surprised if it's the Mets @ KC "rematch".

That was a good call in early September, Edge.

I retract this comment as it appears that Cubs/LAA has already been picked for the ESPN opener:

Now I'm told at a broadcasting board that there might be more than one game that Sunday so it could still happen.

Re: 2016 Schedule

History repeats itself because the Mets started the 2007 season playing at St. Louis. I remember the Mets winning and the narrative was "the Mets have a measure of revenge on the NLCS loss" which pissed me off because no regular season win is any manner of revenge on a post-season loss (although winning is preferable to more losing, of course).

YUP!
MLB going to Three Sunday April 3rd openers -- all to involve 2015 playoff teams and all to be televised by ESPN -- including the Mets @ Royals which will be the featured Sunday night game (meaning that our GKR fix will need to wait an extra day before being fulfilled). Cards @ Pirates at 1:00, Jays @ Rays at 4PM are the other Sunday games.
ESPN then returns to broadcast 4 more openers on Monday. The article doesn't go on to mention whether those will be the final time they mention baseball for the rest of the year or not.

Also back this year will be the synchronized final day of the regular season -- all 3 PM EDT games on Sunday Oct 2.

and game 2 moved to Tuesday.

Mets will leave Matz in Florida and carry a DH for the first two (7) games until they need him on the 12th.

Re: 2016 Schedule

I hadn't realized (mainly because I paid no attention to next year's sked until just now) that it's only a two-game series vs KC to open the season (Royals come to Citi for a 2-gamer later on).
That means, now with the Sunday start, that they play only twice over the first five days of the season: Sunday & Tuesday, but then not again until the home opener on Friday.

That kinda suxx.

Re: 2016 Schedule

Theoretically, the Mets could leave the 3d starter in Florida until six days into the season as the Opening Day starter (Sunday) can also start the home opener (Friday).

Re: 2016 Schedule

May 29 is now a night game thanks to ESPN. The Mets might lose two 1 PM starts as a result because the next day (Memorial Day) they have a scheduled 1:10 start at home. I'm thinking that they might move it to a 4 or 7 PM start.

Just really giving the full season schedule a thorough look now ... 13 Saturday home games this season: 11 night games* (including the very first week on 4/9) plus two 4 PM games
The 1 o'clock Saturday start time is officially dead, even on potentially cold weather days (early April, late September).

At least there's not the indignity, such as has happened in some years, of an off day on Memorial Day and/or Labor Day.
Both Memorial Day & July 4 (Mondays each) are home games and day games. Labor Day Monday also a day game but in Cincy.

* including (at least according to the sked I'm seeing) an 8:15 start time vs Atlanta on June 18

Re: 2016 Schedule

So all the clever folks at FOX figure that making this a 5:15 PDT start time instead of 4:00 is going to entice a whole lot more west coast dudes to plop themselves in front of a TV set, on a Saturday afternoon in June no less, for an out of town baseball game from back east.
Yeah sure, whatever.
