Addison Reed

An unblemished ERA after 11 innings. Thirteen strikeouts and just two walks.

I'm trying to figure out how much I believe in him. Is he a Diamondback diamond in the rough, or is he Guillermo Mota, and just waiting for the post-season to blow up?

Unlike other bullpen additions, like Clippy and O'Herlihy, Mets control him for two more years.

A non-descript hairstyle... no tatts... what kind of late-inning reliever is that?

Hey, Heilman wasn't all bad. I'm sure he struck out a guy once or something.

Addison Reed FACTS:

1. Quit dipping following Tony Gwynn's death.

2. Meet his wifey, Cady. They were married last November in Scottsdale, AZ:

3. In July, they had their first kid, a daughter, named Makena..

4. Grew up in Rancho Cucamonga CA where he rooted for the nearby Angels and Jim Edmonds.

5. Traded from Chicago to Arizona for Top 100 3rd base prospect Matt Davison, but Davidson has stalled at AAA, hitting just .203 this year.

6. Was the stud closer at San Diego State when Steven Strassburg was the stud starter.

7. Threw just 108 innings in the minors before getting called up to the White Sox. Was a 3rd round draftee in 2010.

8. Has a younger brother, Austin, who is a reliever for the Mdyrtle Beach Pelicans (Cubs - Class A Carolina League champions).

His name sounds like a kid who went to an exclusive prep school.

He was a couple of classes behind Blake DeWitt. They were up for the same role in a school production of All About Eve.

I trust him as much as Clippard right now. I think he could be a valuable tool in the pen for the next couple of years.

Tough to figure Reed [lather rinse and repeat for just about all relievers]

He was a 'Certified Closer' for two seasons with the White Sox [29 & 40 Saves] and then one w/Arizona (32 Saves) but maintained ERAs of around 4.00 during those years with WHiPs that were kind of ordinary as well. Not that those numbers tell-all with a closer but overall he seemed kind of average-ish at best.
Early this year he blew a few saves and by May they had taken his closer's ID card away from him and his K, BB, & HR numbers were all going the wrong way - although you figure that maybe the HRs are connected to the park.

He'll be merely arg-eligible this winter meaning that, with Clippard a FA, Mejia out of the picture, and Parnell iffy at best, he's at least a decent bet to think about for set-up man next year.

With that mound-punim, he looks like Heilman and Leiter had a test-tube baby, and then put him on sedatives.

Same here; that's the problem.

My worry with the pen is that, at present and collectively, they're good enough to dominate iffy hitters, but not nearly good enough to shut down good ones. (And some of them-- the bearded ones, mostly-- aren't near that good.)
