Re: ALDS: TOR vs TEX

I don't really care, but I think the Jays are the best team in the AL (with my limited knowledge of the junior circuit), so I guess I look for them to succeed.

After the Cardinals, are the Jays the team left that has won a championship most recently?

What a joy to be in the meat of the post-season without the Red Sox, Giants and Yankees in attendance! Now the Cards should go fuck themselves too and give someone else a chance.

I assume you're talking World Championship, and not league pennant.

Let's see: Mets, 1986. Cardinals, 2011. Cubs, 1908. Dodgers, 1988. Blue Jays, 1993. Astros, never. Rangers, never. Royals, 1980.

Unless it's St. Louis, somebody's going to end a lengthy dry spell.

Royals are 1985, not 1980 (they lost to Philadelphia that year), but of course the point holds.

Oops, right. They lost to the Phillies in 1980, beat the Cardinals in 1985.

Self interested standpoint: Mets probably would do better against the Rangers in a hypothetical World Series matchup. Hence I would root for them.

Really though: I don't care all that much. I hold no particular animosity or particular favor towards either team, or their fanbase, or any particular players (except maybe Dickey).

My self interested standpoint is i don't want to travel back-and-forth to Dallas to watch the World Series.

Additional self interested standpoint: The Burger Priest is the second best burger i've tasted in North America (2nd only to the Burger Joint on 56th & 6th) and it's only available in the Greater Toronto Area.

Re: ALDS: TOR vs TEX

Looking at that Toronto (and, remember, you don't pronounce the second t) lineup:
On the team one year ago?
Revere - Nope
Donaldson - Nope
Tulowitski - Nope
Smoak - Nope
Martin - Nope
Goins & Pillar - yes, although in backup roles
Price - Nope

So that essentially leaves the two big boys in the middle there - Encarnacion & Bautista - as leftovers from 2014.
It seems like the Jays had their big makeover 2 or 3 years back (the Dickey deal, the big one with the Marlins) but it's really been more like one long continuous shuffle.

This game was starting to have a body count.
Donaldson & Bautista on the Toronto side and Beltre for Texas all walked off the field mid-game with some assorted owwie or another.
Beltre's (back) looked most serious. Bautista was reported as a tight hammy while Donaldson took a knee to the cranium and needed to be checked out.

Are Houston and Kansas City a bigger combined market than Toronto and Dallas/Fort Worth? I remember when postseason games were on broadcast networks, they didn't like having Toronto in the playoffs (I think I'm recalling 1985 here) because the networks weren't selling advertising time in Canada. I don't know, but I doubt that that's still a factor.

Houston is a surprisingly large city -- fourth largest in the country and nipping at Chicago's heels. That's partially to it being really spread out. Sadly, I suspect 85 percent of the city is football obsessed.

San Antonio is actually larger than Dallas -- and I would never have guessed that until I saw the list while searching for Houston's population.

It's also R.A. Rickey's first career postseason start.

Re: [IST] ALDS: TOR vs TEX

That makes RA the oldest pitcher to make a post-season debut.
But now, even with a 7-1 lead and 2 outs in the 5th (aka: one out short of qualifying for a win) he's being pulled in favor of David Price. The Jays have evidently decided that Stroman is going to be their Game 5 starter rather than Price, but it still seems like an odd move to me, both in who is relieving and also when.

Re: [IST] ALDS: TOR vs TEX

And then this whole saga somehow gets a bit weirder.

Price threw 50 pitches on Monday during a blowout in relief of a guy who didn't seem to need relief [Dickey = 1 run on 5 singles/0 BB over 4.2 IP]. So with the deciding game not until Wednesday you'd figure the Jays would make some statement as to 'well let's see how he feels' concerning Price's possible usage for that game. But no, Gibbons effectively pre-rules him out entirely saying, 48 hours ahead of time, that Price will not be available for that game.

Now of course that sets him up to pitch in Game 1 of the ALCS but you have to get there first and with no idea what kind of situation you'll have in the middle of Game 5 -- Stroman has pitched just 4 games this year after having a major leg injury during ST -- the guy who went 9-1 for you over 11 starts after the deadline deal won't be there to help because you went to him to protect a 6-run lead at a time when your team was sitting on a 97% 'Win Expectancy'.
Does anything say 'We don't want you back next year' louder than this?

Oct 13 2015 07:17 AM
Re: [IST] ALDS: TOR vs TEX

Somebody on Mike and Mike this morning suggested that Gibbons preemptively went to Price in relief in game four so he wouldn't have to make a hard choice between starting Price or Stroman--both on full rest--in game 5. If you're into conspiracy theories, that's not a bad one, particularly since Price did not seem to know ahead of time that he might be called on yesterday.

GAME FIVE WEIRDNESS UPDATE:

Tie game in the Ranger seventh, two outs, Odor on third with Choo batting. Russell Martin hits Choo's bat on a throw back to the pitcher-- initially erroneously ruled dead by the ump-- and a hyperalert Odor scampers home with the go-ahead run.

Fans at the Rogers Centre are filling the field with debris in response. Just another black eye for those embarrassing, subhuman New York fa-- wait, this is in Toronto? Never mind.

Crazy play lets Texas take 3-2 lead in 7th. Russell Martin's return throw to mound inadvertently hits Choo bat and rolls away letting runner score from 3rd. Made controversial by the fact that initial call on field was no run. Fans are throwing shit onto the field.

To review: three straight Ranger infield errors load the bases with none out, followed by a Ben Revere grounder to first which Mitch Moreland fires home, ostensibly in hopes of the 3-2-3 DP... only Dalton Pompey ankle-whips the catcher Gimenez (a play reviewed and upheld as legal).

Then, after Hamels is given the hook (after not allowing a ball out of the infield this inning), Josh Donaldson's pop-force-out at second off reliever Sam Dyson scores the tying run on what might have been the third out... and a Jose Bautista moonshot-- the first hit of the inning for the Jays-- gives the home team a 6-3 lead.

Did I get it all so far? Also, is this the weirdest inning, top to bottom, in ALDS history? In postseason history?

Man, the Rangers are building a rough post-season history.

Three times a AL West winner over a four year span in the '90s, they got wiped out by the Yanx each time winning just one game (1-9)
Then they lost back to back World Series in 2010 & '11 including that Game 6 crusher to StL where they were one strike from winning several times.
And since then they've tacked on a WC game loss, and now this.

That's a lot of soul-crushing defeats in less than a 20 year span.

They traded for Cole Hamels. Had it coming.

Here's hoping for a similar fate for the team that traded for Chase Utley.

The umpires were faced with a difficult play? They gathered to discuss it, and then checked the rule to make absolutely sure they had it right?

Wow. What a fucking concept.

That bat flip was epic. Lucky he didn't come up again in the game, though.

Sam Dyson is catching heat for having said Bautista "disrespected the game" but I think what he really meant was that that act disrespected Sam Dyson and the Rangers, which it did.

Get off my lawn if you must but the erosion of sportsmanship in sports exhibited here troubles me inasmuch as it sort of condones this culture of ugly narcissists we've become.

In general I agree, although I'm willing to cut Bautista some slack due to the YUGE-ness of the HR and the genuine emotion it triggered. Far different from the over-celebrating that sometimes goes on after more routine plays. Fine, you finally sacked the QB after trying to get after him for 47 straight plays. Now end your fucking dance and get ready for the next play you idiot.

I remember Deion Sanders in his early days with the Falcons intercepting a pass late in the 4th quarter and taking in when he team was down something like 35-0 and doing his high-stepping / check-me-out dance all the way. I would think that kind of thing would make his teammates want to pummel him but apparently the opposite was true and a sign, I think, of how ingrained (and this was what, 20 years ago?) that kind of narcissistic culture is in the NFL and how much I'd like to keep it out of baseball. But big plays call for big emotion and I'd like to apply different standards for the equivalent of Bautista's shot vs some Tuesday night HR in June.

I dunno. Here's some unbelieveable footage from Bautista's young Japanese cousin (stick with it, it's worth it):

In NPB, KBO and Latin America, bat flipping is no big deal. These unwritten rules in baseball are bupkis. They're what fucking landed Tejada in hospital and cost the Mets Game 2. They're from a bygone era, inhabited by twats like Billy Wagner, Chase Utley and Jonathan Paplebon.

There's a case for and against tolerance for pimping homers and strikeouts, but I'm not sure that connects to Tejada's injury.

They just shouldn't allow bat flips. And by "they," I mean relievers, or pitchers in general. Learn a sinker, maybe, Mr. Dyson.

A century and a half of Hal Chase, spikes-up "play the right way," collusion, wage depression, "get off the field, nigger," and no-homo... and this is the signpost for the coarsening of the game? C'mon.
