GAME: New York Mets (91-72) at Los Angeles Dodgers (92-71)
DATE/TIME: Saturday, October 10 - 9:00 PM EST
WHERE: Dodger Stadium, Los Angeles, California
LINE: N/A TOTAL: N/A
Playoff Series: Divisional Playoff; NY Mets leads 1-0
Covers Media Group, Ltd.

The New York Mets defeated Los Angeles ace Clayton Kershaw in the opener and look to take a 2-0 lead when they visit the Dodgers for Game 2 of their National League Division Series on Saturday. Jacob deGrom was scintillating with 13 strikeouts in seven scoreless innings as New York recorded a 3-1 victory in Game 1.

Los Angeles standout Zack Greinke will look to even the best-of-five series and keep his club from heading to New York on the brink of elimination. The Game 1 defeat reminds the Dodgers of their postseason struggles as they have lost their last eight series in which they've dropped the opening game. Daniel Murphy's solo homer and David Wright's two-run single provided the Mets with the offense they needed on a night in which they recorded just five hits. New York manager Terry Collins, 66, won his postseason debut and sends rookie Noah Syndergaard to the mound against Greinke.

TV: 9:07 p.m. ET, TBS

PITCHING MATCHUP: Mets RH Noah Syndergaard (9-7, 3.24 ERA) vs. Dodgers RH Zack Greinke (19-3, 1.66)

Syndergaard gave the rotation a big boost with his emergence as he held opposing hitters to a .225 average. The 23-year-old was just 2-5 with a 4.23 ERA in 12 road starts, but he went 2-0 with a 2.29 ERA in his last three outings away from home. "To me, it's just all about getting comfortable out there on the mound on the road," Syndergaard said in his press conference. "I feel like in the last couple starts I had on the road, I had a lot of success, lot of comfort."

Greinke posted the lowest ERA by a starting pitcher since Atlanta's Greg Maddux (1.63) in 1995 and it was under 2.00 the entire season. He allowed two or fewer runs in 26 of his 32 starts and is one of three candidates for the NL Cy Young Award - Kershaw and Chicago's Jake Arrieta being the others. "I've probably stopped trying to trick guys as much as I used to," Greinke said, "and try to make my pitches as good as possible."

WALK-OFFS:
1. Dodgers 1B Adrian Gonzalez struck out in all three of his at-bats against deGrom before singling in the club's lone run in the eighth.
2. Mets OF Yoenis Cespedes hasn't homered since Sept. 14 and went 0-for-4 with three strikeouts in Game 1.
3. Los Angeles RF Andre Ethier struck out twice in four at-bats in the opener and is 4-for-31 with 11 strikeouts over the last three postseasons.

I'm hoping the Dodgers feel the pressure tonight. It may not be an elimination game, but it has to feel like a must-win for them.

Also, ABNS has the mojo. He needs to find a way to get to the Stadium again tonight.

You can get a seat at tonight's game on Stubhub for under $50. It might not be a great seat, but still, it's a playoff game.

Compare to Monday, where it'll cost you $350 on StubHub to get in the door, standing room only.

I had a dream last night. Flores ran into one with the head of his bat, he dropped the barrell right on it full force, and it went so far over the left field pavilion that all the fans in the stadium were crying. There was a close up of Mattingly and he was crying. Justine Turner tried to cover it up, but he was crying. Everyone was crying except Wilmer Flores.

Awwww, he's not in the line-up. Never mind.

A couple observations so far:

1) Cuddy should be a pinch hitter and little else after the Conforto-kaboom. If the kid can launch against Grienke, he and start against a lefty.

2) Justin Turner looks ridiculous.

But the logic (I'm guessing) is that if the play was "correctly" called in the first place that Utley would have touched up instead of leaving the field like he was told.
It's just another example of the fallacy that replay can retroactively fix incorrect calls to what supposed to happen.

I didn't think any of the TV angles were conclusive either. And that was no take-out slide. Utley wasn't even trying to touch the bag. He went straight for Tejada who wasn't near the bag. Ripken (clean play) and Darling (dirty play) are disagreeing without saying they are.

The thing about that play is that it could have occurred exactly as it did and been called:
- as no outs (the way it was)
- as one out (the original call)
- or as two outs (had Utley been flagged for an illegal slide and the batter/runner been thumbed on account of it)

Kelly Johnson played a little shortstop this year, but if I recall correctly, nobody hit the ball to him.

David Wright has played shortstop too, but I wouldn't want to put him there at this point in his career.

They can activate Eric Campbell. He's played 6 innings in the big leagues at shortstop.

Ronnie explained it via MLB and it was pretty much what I had guessed:
- that Tejada never touched the base which both negates the neighborhood play and ,makes Utley safe
- that the fact the umps told Utley he was out is the reason he went to the dugout. they then hypothesize that he would have touched up if the "correct" call was made
- the late slide is probably judgement and therefore not reviewable

Yes because it hurt Fan Favorite Buster Posey. I don;t think Tejada is marketable enough to pass rules to protect him but ts so obvious that play was bullshit.

He hit his head pretty good.

I see the contact there with Tejada's leg and Utley, but I have to say I'm amazed he suffered a fracture from that. Remember when he got hurt doing a flip catch near the end of a season and it ended up it was his leg he broke. That's weird. Brittle legs.

Nah his leg was planted when the douchenozzle crashed into him with his legs, I don't think Tejada's particularly fragile.

Yup. An lead with the shoulder

There would have been nothing wrong with the slide had it been before the base.
IOW, the slide itself was fine, it was just the timing/placement of it.

Re: IGT - NLDS Game 2 - Mets at Dodgers, 10/10/15, 9:07 PM E

One of the things Torre said was that since the ump called him out then Utley doesn't have to touch the bag, like we all guessed.

Then he followed it up with this gem: "If a fielder who happened to have the ball had tagged Utley as he jogged back to the dugout then he's out."

Now he may have misunderstood what his lackey tried to teach him, but the fact that he didn't see that that doesn't make sense is alarming. Not surprising, but alarming.

So the baserunner is excused from touching second because he believes he was out.

According to Torre, the fielder, after Utley had been called out, could have tagged him, and he would have been out.

THIS IS FUCKING IDIOTIC.

CHASE UTLEY MADE NO ATTEMPT TO GO TO SECOND BASE. BY HIS OWN WORDS, HE WENT AFTER THE FIELDER. AFTER HAVING TAKEN OUT THE FIELDER HE LEFT THE FIELD, BECAUSE SECOND BASE WAS NOWHERE ON HIS MIND. THAT IS FUCKING INTERFERENCE AND HE SHOULD HAVE BEEN FUCKING OUT.

That Marlon Anderson bullshit call here, from August 29, 2007.

Marlon Anderson's slide kept the Mets sliding.

Anderson was called out for interference trying to break up a double play for the last out of the game, wiping out the tying run as the Mets lost to the Phillies, 3-2, last night. The loss was the Mets' fourth straight and third in this four-game series that wraps up today, allowing the Phillies to pull within three games of first place in the NL East.

The Mets went down fighting - and arguing.

Pinch-hitter Anderson's one-out single off Phillies closer Brett Myers pushed Endy Chavez, a pinch-runner for Paul Lo Duca, to third base. Shawn Green then grounded into a disputed, game-ending double play. Second base ump C.B. Bucknor ruled Anderson had gone out of the basepath to interfere with second baseman Tadahito Iguchi as he crossed the bag and prepared to throw to first. With Anderson's interlocked arms striking Iguchi in the hip, Iguchi's throw had no chance to get Green at first. Anderson and Willie Randolph argued to no avail, and the Mets lost another game off their lead.

Thing is Anderson was a lot closer to 2B (if I recall) than Utley was.

Also, fuck Utley.

So I did fall asleep during this game, although I didn't realize how much I'd missed. I woke up to hear the Dodgers scoring lots of run. At the end of the inning I heard Howie say it was a controversial inning. "Huh?" I said. And then I was wide awake and spent the rest of the game trying to catch up on what happened. Crazy, nasty shit pulled by Utley, Mattingly, the umps, and the broadcasters who defended what happened (Ripken, I'm looking at you).

Re: IGT - NLDS Game 2 - Mets at Dodgers, 10/10/15, 9:07 PM E

I'm surprised that the Mets didn't file a protest. (Or did they? It doesn't seem that they did.)

What I'd like to see happen is the play be ruled a double play and the game resumed from that point. And a magical instant healing potion applied to Ruben Tejada's leg.

But I'm afraid that both of the above are equally unlikely to happen.

Frayed Knot
Oct 11 2015 12:02 PM
Re: IGT - NLDS Game 2 - Mets at Dodgers, 10/10/15, 9:07 PM E

A protest will just get dismissed as 'judgement' under the reasoning that Utley was close enough to touch the base (even though he didn't); that his slide hit ground about even with the base (and therefore wasn't past it); that replay shows Tejada didn't touch the base therefore negating the 'neighborhood' ruling.

That the replay ruling further fucked us was as predictable as it was horrifying. The one fatal flaw in all replay rules is the idea that you can pretend to set everything 'right' based on what would have happened had the correct ruling been made in the first place. But that doesn't work and so umps have to make flawed assumptions based on what they think might have happened. In this case it's that Utley would have gotten back to 2nd (from where he wound up in short LF) if properly called safe but that Tejada (or another Met) would NOT have tagged him before he could do so.

I suspect that Utley will be disciplined somehow - fines and/or suspension -- but that it will hardly matter in the larger scheme of things. It's even possible that that play was Utley's final one in the major leagues, not because he's going to be kicked out permanently but that he hit as badly for the Dodgers as he did as a Phillie and therefore might not get an offer next season. Plus the Dodger season is ending on Tuesday.

I sure hope so! My current feeling is that this series will probably end in one of two ways: Mets in four or Dodgers in five. I don't think the Dodgers will win both games in Queens, but the Mets might. But if there's a split, it's Greinke again at Dodger Stadium for Game 5, and I suspect that the Dodgers would win that game.
