2015-2016 Managerial Shuffle

Edgy MD
Oct 06 2015 07:22 AM

The offseason hasn't begun with regard to rebuilding rosters, but it's certain started when it comes to coaching staves. Joining Matt Williams and his company of coachies in the search for jobs is San Diego interim manager Pat Murphy.

The heavily muscled-up Padres, held up as an embarrassing contrast with the LOLMets last off-season, actually managed to win fewer games than in 2014, and two manager heads have rolled for it.

The Philadelphia Inquirer reports today that the Marlins have interviewed Larry Bowa for their open managing job.

If he gets the gig, Terry Collins will no longer be baseball's oldest manager.

Re: 2015-2016 Managerial Shuffle

The Nats have asked for and received permission to talk to the Diamondbacks' AAA manager Phil Nevin, also coming with no big league experience, if you value that sort of thing. And indeed, if you do, there is also talk of Don Wakamatsu and Dave Martinez.

Nevin has also been interviewed for the Marlins job (last week) and the Astros job (last year, which went to A.J. Hinch). He gets around. Buzz nonetheless still hovers around Bud Black.

Probably not. Bobby V was a 5th overall. He could be the highest.

Apparently not a firing but a "mutual parting of ways".
Sounds a bit like a Torre situation, where they offer him a deal he could -- and did -- refuse.

Going into a winner-take-all game, at home, with Greinke on the mound, and then getting sunk by the Mets. Getting yelled at by at least two of his players during the game. That's not necessarily the way you wanna go out.

The Mets have really left a trail of human wreckage in their wake this season — with each of the NL East opponents throwing up their hands and turning over their team or their management at one level or another, and the Dodgers perhaps looking at a complete overhaul. It's good to see the Cubs go down with grace.

The Yanquis chose Girardi over Mattingly however many years ago and I don't think they're unhappy with Girardi so, no, I don't expect him to wind up in the Bronx anytime soon (at least not until he's an invited guest at the next number retirement ceremony which should be in a few weeks or so ... and then again a few weeks after that.)

I do suspect that he'll interview for jobs this winter, maybe a few of the ones currently open in the NL East.

Re: 2015-2016 Managerial Shuffle

The thing with the Dodgers is that they're being run now by that ex-TBR guy who inherited Mattingly but would really rather have a manager who's more comfortable with the more Sabermetric kind of stuff they're going to feed him. That as much as anything is what led to a parting of ways.
But moving forward, Dusty ain't going to be that guy, and Randolph ain't that guy (and, yes, I know that suggestion wasn't totally serious to begin with). Bud Black maybe (I heard he prefers to stay on the west coast although will almost certainly at least interview with the Nats)

He has no prior managing experience but had been working in the Angels front office over the last four years under Jerry DiPoto. DiPoto was forced out in Anaheim earlier this year but has since hooked up in Seattle.

1) it's an off day
2) nothing so far sounds like an official announcement and it's tough to legislate against leaks

Mainly the 'rule' is in there to prevent Steinbrennerian type of hires timed purposely so as to steal the back page headlines in the largest media market in the country from a Game 7 of a WS that he wasn't in.

Wow, that's a tough break. They won a tough-assed division that was totally up-for-grabs at mid-season. But man, they paid for it, and turning the burden of the Josι Reyes deal into the triple burden of the the Troy Tulowitzki package was a hell of a last-minute addition to the ongoing payroll heft.

Apparently Anthopolous was offered a five year extension but turned it down. But the writing for this has been on the wall since the Jays hired former Injun exec Mark Shapiro (the guy depicted as talking trades with Beane/Pitt in the early scenes of MONEYBALL) as team president in August.
But, yeah, after years of finishing 3rd behind the Yanx/Sawx blockade, then trying big stuff but never busting to the top of that division (the Dickey trade, the Reyes/Buehrle deal) he finally does break through this season and it turns out to be his last. And all this on the day that Anthopolous was named AL executive of the year.
I suspect he won't be out of work long.

Amid rumors of not being able to come to terms with presumed managerial hire Bud Black (lousy cheap-ass owners!) those talks ended and the team is apparently confirming the story making the rounds that they will take on Dusty Baker as their next dugout skipper.

If true, Terry would still retain his title as MLB's oldest manager as Baker clocks in at three weeks younger.

Re: 2015-2016 Managerial Shuffle

WASHINGTON -- Dusty Baker agreed to a multiyear deal to become the Nationals' new manager on Tuesday.

"We were looking for a manager to help us achieve our ultimate goal of competing for a World Series championship," said Nationals owner Ted Lerner. "During our broad search process, we met with many qualified candidates, and ultimately, it was clear that Dusty's deep experience was the best fit for our ballclub."

Last week, sources said that Bud Black was the club's choice to replace Matt Williams. But multiple reports on Monday night indicated that negotiations between Washington and Black had either cooled or broken off entirely.

Re: 2015-2016 Managerial Shuffle

I think about that also, but I was always curious how much we make assumptions about that. We get extreme results like Prior and Wood, and then we follow the breadcrumbs backward to hang their injuries on Baker. But how much of that is coincidence and how much is causality? And are we selecting data to get the result we want?

Obviously, the Mets obsess over the health of young pitchers, but here we are, with Harvey, deGrom, Matz, and Wheeler, all with surgically repaired arms. Maybe Baker is to blame, but humility suggests we need to dig further.

Here's an old point-coutnerpoint article about Baker: http://bleacherreport.com/articles/3541 ... e-pitchers

What's interesting is to look at "Well, we'll see" cases they bring up back in 2010 — Homer Bailey and such — from the 2015 perspective.

I'm all good with LolNats being the thing instead of LolMets. Hell, let's hit other points from the template. Sandy Alderson was "forced" on the Mets. Let's say Dusty Baker was forced on the Nationals. Certainly there were stories this past month about how the number of minority managers in MLB was unacceptably low.

Re: 2015-2016 Managerial Shuffle

Ventura is signed through 2016. Gibbons has had his option picked up also. Yost signed and extension through 2016 before the season — maybe a bad move in retrospect.

So I got vacancies in Los Angeles and San Diego with Fredi Gonzalez possibly still twisting in the wind in Atlanta(?).

Before Alderson collapsed he confirmed the Mets had given the Dodgers the OK to talk with Geren.

And somehow I missed (but have just now added) Andy Green being hired by the Padres to replace Bud Black (who's next, Red Schoendienst? ... Vida Blue? ... Roy White?)
This oversight is probably due to the fact that I rarely think about the San Diego Padres and have never heard of Andy Green. Apparently he was the bench coach in Arizona recently. I'll take their word for it.

That makes next year's slate complete. Or at least it does until the first firing but that probably won't happen prior to opening day.

Andy Green = 2009 Met.

Appeared in four games and apparently advanced the Mets cause in none of them. The one game in which he got a hit, it was offset by an error, as the Mets were buried 15-2.

He must have done something! He managed to earn 0.32 Schaefer points in 2009.

Anyone else think it's curious that Roberts didn't get much consideration for the internal promotion?

[list]What specifically have you told the front office you’d like that you don’t have yet?

“You’re always in need of left-handed pitching, left-handed hitting, and in need of speed. I think that’s the No. 1 thing that’s missing, I think, in the game is speed. You know, with the need for minorities, you can help yourself. You’ve got a better chance of getting some speed with Latin and African-Americans. I’m not being racist. That’s just how it is.”[/list:u]

It's a good thing it was Dusty who said that cuz most other managers uttering the same words would no longer be a manager by the end of the day.
