Re: Go Rocket Men!

Tommie Agee makes his feelings known at last.

Lol, love the Agee. Is the Gulden's card a real one? I'm honored you used my Rusty.

Hey, I want to make a card for Terry Collins from his playing days, circa 1973-77. I have found some B&W minor league pics of him but none of him in a MLB uniform (Dodgers/Pirates). Anyone know of a usable pic? Below is the best I could find, not MLB and I don't know that I want to spend time colorizing that. Great pic tho. He's so young.

Thanks. Your Staub is the best DIY of Houston Rusty I ever saw on the web. The Grote's a fake. I made it. I made three cards in that thread: the Gulden's Grote, the '72 Agee and the second Tommy Davis card, which is a stylized version of a '48 Bowman.

Look at Agee's mug there. You just know he's pissed off at something.

Didja notice Grote's cap? What's the deal with it? Is that what the rebranded '65 Astros initially intended to wear up until a last minute re-design? The Colts never wore that cap.

I got nuthin' on Collins. And it took me longer than usual just to find that manager card in the thread, which is a regional issue (Mother's Cookies).

Re: Go Rocket Men!

Thank you sir. I have that pic and Agee does look tiffed. No Idea about the Houston hat. Why Gulden's?

As a Met, Grote was a pitchman for Gulden's Mustard. Print ads and TV commercials. I once searched the web for Grote's Gulden's ads but couldn't find anything. I'll bet that if I dug out my Met programs from the early '70's, I'll come across a Gulden's ad featuring Grote.

I probably first learned about Gulden's Mustard from those Grote TV commercials. I didn't know anything about mustard and I didn't start to like mustard until around early High School. That was my father's fault. He liked this powerfully strong mustard that wasn't available in regular stores. My mom had to go to some specialty store to get him his mustard. It was the only mustard in the house and I tried it once and thought I was gonna die. Fumes were coming out of my nose and tears outta my eyes from that mustard. I figured that all mustards were like his. So I stayed away from the stuff for a good many years.

Me too! I would beg my dad to buy Gulden's mustard and I didn't even eat mustard! I'm sure he never knew why!
Remember Sharon Grote serving up those hot dogs to their daughters?

PS your mustard story reminds me of the time I pretended to smoke my dad's pipe. Gak!

Re: Go Rocket Men!

My first Gulden's hot dog was at Shea Stadium (dad never did buy me any Gulden's at home)

He went up to the concession stand and came back with this hot dog with mustard for me. He said they didn't have ketchup so he used the mustard.

I figured if Jerry Grote ate it, so could I. I've loved it ever since :)

This is a great alternative too, always have both in the fridge.

Re: Go Rocket Men!

You have to wonder what Agee thought of that trade. (that card is priceless, btw) Former Rookie of the Year and World Series hero traded for Rich Chiles.

It'd be fun to have a thread of players' assumed opinions of their trades.

Re: Go Rocket Men!

In fairness, those koala eyes were a part of Agee's makeup.

Agee would be diagnosed later with diabetes, right? In retrospect, he seems to be in reasonable shape in his action shots from his career, but his baseball card shots, often taken in the spring, seem to show him obviously carrying extra weight, with the puffy face. And looking older than his years, too.
