Bartolo

Mets Guy in Michigan

I think I groaned a little when we first signed Colon. But I think he's done exactly what has been needed. Look at his work in the pen during this series. How many veterans would have grumbled about a 24-year-old with six career starts getting the ball in a game like last night? Instead, Colon has gone to the pen and done a great job. Heck, he'll probably log as many innings as some of the starters.

I know there probably won't be a role for him next year, but a part of me will be sad to see him go.

Re: Bartolo

If they can sign him cheaply, they should do it. Wheeler won't be pitching until after the All-Star Break, and he can slot in there. He's a good mentor to other pitchers and they can learn from his unflappable demeanor (Matz especially could use this).

I was gutted the only time I saw Bartolo as Met (as a starter) was in an AL ballpark.

I agree. Bartolo has stated that he desires to play next year. Considering that Wheeler likely won't be available the first few months of the season and how fragile (slept funny) Steven Matz has been since his call up, I think Bartolo would be an asset to the team. I think the Mets would be hard pressed to find a better 5th starter than Bartolo. If Matz stays healthy and Wheeler is able to eventually join the rotation, then I think Bartolo would be a good 7th inning reliever in the pen. This doesn't even take into account the positive influence he seems to have in the clubhouse. I believe the young pitchers could learn a great deal from Bartolo.

Re: Bartolo

Keeping him around is certainly not out of the question - which is kind of funny considering that, upon his signing, probably not even 10% of fans would have bet on him lasting the entire two years of the deal.
Hell, only 1/3 of us here at CPF guessed at the beginning of this season that he'd last the year.

My friend told me he encountered Bartolo in workout gear during a tour of Citifield. Said he's anything but fat -- just solid. His face & chin make him look fatter than he is.

Barotolo Colon es un Metro

I'm also surprised that I mentioned Jacob deGrom in that same post. I don't recall being aware of deGrom until he was called up in 2014, but I guess I was wrong.

Sure, he's fat, he's old, has a history of PEDs... and could blow up tomorrow, but so could Wheeler

Thanks a lot, jerk.

Re: Bartolo

He's been a little bit better -- and a lot more fun to have as a Met -- than I would have guessed at first ("no me gusta" was my comment) but seems like fans + media in general get carried away with his magic, considering his underwhelming ERA. But you can't just spit on 29 victories and 60 starts.

In on the ground floor, and never left.

One year deals, for as long as he wants.

I'm Bartolo Colon. I can pitch extra innings in the fucking World Series and I'm the calmest dude in the world.
