The ballot for this year's Rock 'n' Roll Hall of Fame is, dare I say it... deep? It includes a handful of absurd oversights from previous years and some returnees with strong cases as well.

The depth is particularly strong in the C section.

We're gonna make it hard and give you five votes from among the 15 nominees, with the option to change your votes going forward. Go to town.

Re: Vote for Induction

This is the weakest ballot I've seen in years. None seem particularly strong candidates. Most are just groups who had a very short window of good work and many years of mediocrity (e.g., Chicago and Steve Miller). I picked Yes for historical purposes, and I suppose you could make a choice for NWA, but I think the best solution would be to skip this year altogether.

Re: Vote for Induction

I went with the Klassik Rawk 5-pack, Cars, Cheap Trick, Yes, Steve Miller and Chicago.

Not realistic I know -- Miller stands almost no chance, Cheap Trick looks like the kinda band they'll keep on there to keep Dad-rockers like me interested while they elect frauds like Bon Jovi and the Cars I see getting in but maybe not first-ballot.

My elevator arguments:
Cars -- bridged old & new styles while a "war" erupted between them, hitmakers, video pioneers, short but enduring career

Cheap Trick -- authentic, did it their own way, unexpected popular breakthrough, still hanging in there, musician's musicians

Yes -- Made prog accessible, elevated the album cover, unexpected second act reached all-new audiences, great players

Steve Miller -- Turned blues into pop, long career, distinguished, midnight toker

Chicago -- Horniest of the big-horn bands, lots of hits, um, yeah.

NWA = "Niggaz with Attitude" — a rap group out of Compton most known for launching Ice Cube's career. A biopic about them is currently in release. The first thing folks realized when Soundscan came online to track sales and build Billboard charts from was that a lot more people were buying NWA and Garth Brooks albums than Whitney Houston and Gloria Estefan albums, contrary to prior understanding. The market had grown segmented in ways the programmers had been only dimly aware of.

The. J.B.'s = longtime backing band for James Brown. How they are distinct from the Famous Flames and the JB All-Stars — two other names his backing musicians have been billed as, I'm not entirely certain.

I would say this about virtually any musical career. Elvis Presley, Frank Sinatra, the Beach Boys... .

If anything, the decades of mediocrity obscures just how impressive the excellence was. Chicago's first four alba were all double-disc-length and released in two and a half years. That's a swaggering commitment to attacking the marketplace head on, while maintaining simultaneous pursuit of radio-ready tracks and longer, experimental art-rock explorations.

You don't want to throw that out just because "Hard to Say I'm Sorry" was just the worst thing ever — even though it was.

They should be inducted just for the outro to "Beginnings." My God!

Re: Vote for Induction

First glance I considered Yes and Chicago shoe ins. The Nine Inch Nails, The Smiths, and the Cars round out my list although only one of them are really worthy.
I guess some of you guys were oversaturated with Chicago's syrupy sound days. Chicago 1 to 7, all classic albums. Early Chicago was a wonder to behold.

25 or 6 to 4 got the heavy rotation in its day. I didn't mind.

This in it's entirety was too long for AM. FM would play it, and still it was chopped up into separate songs at times.
Make Me Smile was such a new sound when music was bursting with new sounds (late 60's to mid 70's)
Colour My World, like the #1 slow song at school dances when I was so young I was nervous to dance with a girl,
was really a small part of a larger suite that was heavily rotated on my turntable.
I know it's long, but listen to the whole thing. This is Chicago at one of it's peaks.

They could change sounds like a Jaguar shifting gears. They went from something like this:

Chicago's music, out of the gate, was revolutionary.

Stunned some of you guys think this is a weak ballot. I think it's one of the stronger ones in years.

And, the hall's nomination process is a mystery. How are some of these band, who have existed in the 1970s, just getting on the ballot? And why is Chic on the ballot every single year?

I also went for the Classic Rawk Five-pack.

The Cars: My second-ever concert, and somehow I was allowed to wander around Berner High with the Candy-O album cover on a t-shirt and never get an ounce of flack from a teacher. I think the band's peak was longer and stronger than some are giving them credit for, and the stuff still sounds fresh. Plus, the band shows that even the homeliest guy in any room can marry a super model. Plus-plus, the guitarist is from Massapequa.

Yes: I was never a huge Yes fan. I was in the school of thought that favored guitars and frowned on keyboards, so bands like ELP and Styx were not metal enough. My buddy loves prog rock and says Yes is to prog what The Ramones are to punk. I do like some of the "Owner of a Lonely Heart" era stuff. I thought "Love will Find a Way" was cool because I thought the chorus was:

"Here is my heart
Waiting for you
Here is my soul
I eat at chez you."

Chez you. Cool!

Then only recently did I learn that the lyric is actually "chez nous." Oh.

Chicago: I can't figure out why these guys have been kept out. Unique sound. Many, many hits. Many years of success. Songs are still played on radio a lot today. Sure, they got a little soft for a while, but Rod Stewart is in the hall and his "American Songbook" stuff is awful.

Steve Miller: "Greatest Hits" is one of those albums that remain huge sellers. He's got a lot of big, iconic songs. I kind of thought he was inducted years ago. I think it's one of those guys who nobody lists as their favorite artist, but everyone kind of likes. Remained relevant for a long time. "Jet Airliner" is a great song.

Cheap Trick: I like Cheap Trick. Maybe a short peak, but still successful for a really long time. Not sure what the drama with Bun. E. Carlos is really about. I can't justify why Green Day is a Hall of Fame band and Cheap Trick is not.

I don't know about that. The band says that "Hello There" was written as a means to warm up and tune up when constant gigging and a tight schedule wouldn't allow for soundchecks, that's why its got a drum and guitar solo and is only like 90 seconds long.

Re: Vote for Induction

I voted for the Smiths last year, but I couldn't pull the trigger this year. "HSIN?" is simply one of the greatest songs ever pressed to wax and would get any band 50% of the way to my vote on its own, but one thing I've noticed while searching for traxxx is that I can't find a whole lot of quality Smiths video footage. That certainly doesn't mean the band wasn't ever good live, but it would help their case to see it. Most of their other singles (and they were VERY productive in their short-ish run) were flawed in one way or another, though clever and often beautiful in their own way, and even in their flaws. Perhaps they suffer when compared to "HSIN?" Most every song ever does.

Anyhow, I just found the ballot more competitive this year, with the addition of longtime oversights like the Cars and Chicago and Cheap Trick. I certainly think the Smiths are a R&RHoF band, and it's important (at least, relatively so) to see bands who did better in Europe and Australia get their day in this US-centered institution.

Of course, nobody put on a show like James Brown. Here's 10th place act the J.B.'s backing James Brown and Bobby Byrd, sweating up a storm in Italy. In 12th place with two votes (including my own) is the inimitable Chaka Khan.

I wanted to post her tearing through "We Can Work It Out," but the best version I found of that was too grainy. But tell her something good. Tell her that you voted for her.

Coming in tied for 13th, with a single, loving vote is Nile Rodgers and Chic. This will be our second live clip from Budokan.

I'd've liked to have used an early clip from their heyday with late drummer Tony Thompson, but all the ol' clips are miming and lip-synching.

Chicago, great band from the very beginning, as attested to here in 1968, covering the Spencer Davis Group, passing the vocal around, breaking it down by having the horn section provide additional percussion — ut fully audible percussion that actually contributes to the performance. It's not like Stevie Nicks on tambourine or anything. And leavened the horns out just underscores how cool Robert Lamm's Hammond sound is, wailing even more freely than Steve Winwood's on the original. And Terry Kath's SG makes all sorts of funky roaring sounds. And it's cool that they're doing it in the round, like they're performing it for each other.

[youtube:7lmn0x86]UVLUFl6WO6E[/youtube:7lmn0x86]

Reached #49 on the US charts even though it was only released as a B-Side.

I'm absolutely shocked Steve Miller got in, not that you can't make a case for him: Respected chops from a child prodigy to veteran bluesman; credibility as a psych-rocker and figure in that scene; second-act career as a FM hitmaker; bazillion-selling Greatest Hits package. But I mean, still.

Cars I guess aren't taken seriously enough.

I'm ready to begin campaigning however for Joe Jackson Class of 2017: Diversity of styles; impeccable arranger; master executor; won mainstream fans and critics with a single album classic that still holds up after 35 years; should be recognized for pursuing alternatives to established routine -- for example, recording albums "live" to avoid artificial sounds typical of recording made in the 80s era, abandoning his angry young man pop-punk style despite hitting it right off the bat.

Possible points off for pomposity, weird look, disdain for establishment, seeming preference for weird German cabaret songs over real American rock and/or roll.

JJ is certainly in my top 20 of artists on the outside. He gives you 75% of what Costello gives you (and Elvis was a no-brainer), and a not a small bit that Elvis doesn't, but wasn't as clever in marketing his latter-day experimental aloofness as superiority. Costello has given a lot more output in the last 20 years, but a lot of it stuff that people buy and never play.

I'm not shocked because I think the standards for induction into the R&R HOF are vague and nebulous. There's a sort of anything goes approach to this thing, as far as I'm concerned. Miller's got the longevity, staying power, big hits and record sales worthy of what I think is a R&R HOF'er. But I'm not so sure that Miller ever did anything musically original, or that was never done before, many times over. FWIW, I bought his stuff on vinyl, and then on CD.

Apparently, before being co-members of the 2016 Rock 'n' Roll HoF class of inductees, the awful "Look Away" was something Chicago and Cheap Trick had in common.

"Tom Petersson rejoined in 1988, and then the vice president at Epic Records told us he had these two songs and they're both gonna be #1. He goes, 'We got one for you and one for the group Chicago, but you can have first choice.' He said, 'I think the one 'The Flame' would be good for you guys.' The other one was 'Look Away,' and it sounded like some girl singing on the demo. We really didn't like that song anyway, so 'Sure, we'll do 'The Flame.' We're game.'"
— Bun E. F. Carlos

So there you go. Two ugly little songs that were gonna be #1 no matter what, because the payola was already taken care of before they were recorded or even matched with a band.

I just watched the "You're the Inspiration" video. You know... for research. I'd become so fixated on Peter Cetera's bauhaus tee-shirt that I didn't notice:

(1) the deployment of the band (Cetera on vocals and bass, a drummer, two guys sitting around, and four [!!] keyboard players);

(2) Cetera is playing a left-handed bass guitar right-handed, like he's some sort of bizarro Jimmy Hendrix or something; and

(3) a PiL tee-shirt also makes a cameo. Somebody connected to this thing was a closet punk.

Re: Vote for Induction

That video is crazy. I do miss that kinda 80s girl with the big hair. But Kurt Loder busts in with the scoop:

NEW YORK, Dec. 23 (UPI) -- Peter Cetera is reportedly not rejoining Chicago for its April Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction.

The group's keyboardist Robert Lamm previously reported Cetera, a successful solo artist and former bandmate, would sing with the band at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn on April 8. But after an alleged e-mail conversation with Cetera, Lamm retracted his Radio.com announcement, saying exchanges were "misinterpreted by me."

"I've mistakenly said Cetera would be playing," Lamm wrote to Billboard in an an e-mail. "He has emphatically declined...I've apologized to him, and likewise apologize to the music press community and fans."

Despite the mix-up, Cetera announced on his website Wednesday he will release a big announcement after New Year's Day. In a brief statement, the singer said it has to do with the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

"Tell all your friends, tell the press, tell radio, TV, newspapers, why you can even tell the Pres, Hillary, Trump, everyone," Cetera said. "I will make an important announcement on this site after the New Year that will shock the WOOORRLLDD...regarding my participation in The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame."

"Until then, have a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year and Ill speak to you shortly after New Year's day with my earthshaking announcement," he added.

Cetera used to be the lead singer of Chicago, lending his vocals to the songs "25 or 6 to 4," "Feelin Stronger Every Day," and "Just You 'n' Me." He left the band in 1985 to pursue a solo career.

Re: Vote for Induction

That is one amazing announcement to make an announcement. What in the world could Peter Cetera do at this point that's dramatic? More dramatic than rejoining Chicago? Is he joining the Jackson 5? Will he be pulling a Jenner and performing as a woman?

Shock the WOOORRLLDD? How do you even pronounce the double terminal D at the end of that word? Is he an alien? That would explain a lot.

And what the devil is an "alleged e-mail conversation"?

Peter Cetera Trivia: His easily recognizable singing style supposedly developed as a result of getting into a brawl at a Los Angeles Dodgers game in 1969, and then having to go on the road and sing with his jaw wired shut.

Cetera's version involves four marines—who took exception to a long-haired rock 'n' roller rooting for the Cubs. But I'm calling bull on that part, at least. I mean, why is it always four marines?
