Howie was talking about how hard the Cubs were rooting for the Mets to come out of this series, because
a) they won 7 of 7 (as opposed to 3 of 7 vs Dodgers) so why not
and
b) the city still wants revenge for '69

The Chicago Cubs are four wins away from their first trip to the World Series since 1945 – all that stands in the way are the New York Mets. The Cubs visit the Mets for Game 1 of the National League Championship Series on Saturday. In lieu of a ceremonial first pitch, Cal Ripken will take the field and eat Centerfield's asshole in front of the packed house.

Chicago survived the wild-card game against 98-win Pittsburgh and took down the 100-win St. Louis Cardinals in the Division Series to move one step closer to its first pennant in 70 years and first World Series title since 1908. The Cubs rode an impressive group of young sluggers led by Kyle Schwarber and Jorge Soler through the NLDS and will send two-time World Series winner Jon Lester to the mound in Game 1. The Mets hit their fair share of home runs in their division series against the Los Angeles Dodgers as well, capped by Daniel Murphy’s decisive solo shot in Game 5, and are riding their own wave of momentum in the NLCS. New York, which went 0-7 against Chicago in the regular season, will send ace Matt Harvey to the mound with no restrictions in Game 1.

PITCHING MATCHUP: Cubs LH Jon Lester (0-1, 3.68 ERA) vs. Mets RH Matt Harvey (1-0, 3.60)

Chicago decided to go with Lester over Jake Arrieta in Game 1 because he was next up in the rotation, and both are set to go twice in the series if necessary. Lester allowed three runs and five hits while striking out nine over 7 1/3 innings in Game 1 of the NLDS but took the loss to drop to 6-5 with a 2.66 ERA in his postseason career. The 31-year-old tossed seven scoreless innings at New York on July 1 and has never lost to the Mets in three career starts.

Harvey has worked a total of 22 1/3 innings since Sept. 8 as the team tried to limit his workload in anticipation of the playoffs. The Connecticut native went five innings and allowed three runs – two earned on seven hits and a pair of walks in a win in the NLDS and has surrendered two or fewer earned runs in each of his last four outings. Harvey struck out nine over seven scoreless innings at Chicago on May 13.

WALK-OFFS:
1. Cubs rookie SS Addison Russell (hamstring) will miss the series.
2. New York 3B David Wright went 1-for-16 in the NLDS.
3. Schwarber is 7-for-13 with three home runs in five postseason games.

After that Game 5 in L.A., no Mets fan should be booing anybody. Things right now are about as positive as they can possibly be.

I was wondering who should get first pitch duties. The last NLCS hero makes the most sense, thought I. But then I realized the Mets last NLCS MVP was Mike Hampton, and I didn't think the forgiveness was all that strong among the fan base.

Then I suddenly realized, that despite the Mets being an impressive 4-for-5 in NLCS series over their history, Hampton is their only NLCS MVP. The honors went to an opposing player in 1986, and the award hadn't been established yet in 1973 and 1969.

So Hampton it is!

It's weird not finding any members of the opposing team to dislike -- no Gonzo, no Fat Leprechaun, no Mutley, no J-roll, no Madonna. Even feel mildly sympathetic to their fans.

It was 45 degrees for the start of the game and it will undoubtedly get colder as the game progresses, but all the Mets need to do to keep warm is stand near Murphy's bat. Es en el fuego.

Lucky for Baez and the Cubs that Utley wasn't running from first. He would have "put body" on him for sure. Doesn't matter that he was 7-8 feet from second base when he made the throw.

That was a bad shot on the Flores flyout the way the old Yankee PIX broadcasts used to do — following a deep fly with the camera instead of following the fielder, that way the ball looks majestic, but you have no idea where it's going.

The throw easily beat Lagares to the plate. Thought for sure he was a dead duck, but the catcher caught the ball behind the plate, virtually giving Lagares and the Mets the run.

Familia's two innings on Thursday were so efficient that it was essentially one inning (just 19 pitches total) so it's not like he's being subjected to abuse here.
Yeah, it is twice in three days now where it's get up, get some outs, sit down, then get up again. But think about how much we'd be kicking ourselves if we lost one of these last two games with Reed or Clippard on the mound because we were 'saving' Jeurys for the inning that never was.

It not the number of outs -- it's the number of pitches. Familiar threw 21 tonight. He threw 21 on Thursday for six outs. That's not all that big a workload.

What you say about the 2 innings on Thurs is reassuring. My concern is that the other guys won't be sharp if we need em. But if we can avoid using them? I'm all for that, no offense to Clip or Reed. I think we'd need a 3 run lead for me to even be able to breath with anyone on the mound save a starter or Familia (or Colon). And even then use em sparingly. I can't complain about how TC's doing it...as long as he gets away with it. He's playing to win.

I hope we get a chance to get those guys some innings with a blowout tomorrow night. If they get a couple good innings under their belts I can relax about that. I think.

My first postseason game since Game 7 of '06 (division series was an unfortunate conflict). Great to be back at the game.

Crowd was a little bit more subdued than I expected. Not that they were quiet, but I guess part of it was the cold (people sitting on hands instead of clapping them). Rally towel waving is also not noise-producing activity. No acceptable excuse for people leaving early (on a Saturday night). I could theoretically understand it, maybe (but never accept it) if it was Sunday night but certainly not here.

Ceremonies, etc.:
Uribe, Tejada and Goeddel were all introduced with the team.
Loudest cheers went to Jacob deGrom, who got to tip his cap to the crowd twice and Murphy. Quietest in the starting lineup was Cuddyer but fortunately there were no boods.
Keith was fantastic with the first pitch; wore a jersey rather than that mink coat.

Game strategy:
Didn't like the Harvey bunt in the bottom of the 5th, with 1 out and runners at 1st and 2nd. Just swing away.

Especially didn't like pulling Harvey for Familia with two out and no runners on in the top of the 8th.
a. I would have just left Harvey in (he was at 97 pitches)
OR
b. I would have gone to Clippard for Bryant. Back him up with Gilmartin/Niese against Rizzo if Bryant had reached.

I did not like using Familia for extra outs that he really didn't need to get.

The homers were great. As was Cespedes' throw and Lagares' baserunning. Fantastic to get game 1.

I didn't notice people leaving early but was harder to tell from centerfield.

I think it's neat how empty the food lines are with a full stadium after the game starts. I managed to get a beer, a bathroom break, and some tacos in less than an inning .

Most disappointing fans of the night: the ones who passively allowed Rizzo to reach 6 rows deep to catch Cespedes's foul pop.
That was the second of two consecutive foul pops which were right in front of d'Arnaud's HR. Nothing could have been done about the first one over on the 3rd base side, but that second one was clearly in fan territory and could have -- Should have -- been prevented from ever getting to Rizzo and there would have been no chance of interference on the play.

I agree for the most part that it's the number of pitches, not the number of innings that stress a pitchers arm. But I do think for a closer there is something to be said about coming in, pitching one inning and being done, as opposed to sitting between innings, cooling off and warming up again on the mound. I think the latter scenario can be more stressful. Especially for a pitcher that's used to only warming up once and doing the first scenario.

That said, bringing in Familia in yesterday was my second choice. I would've given Harvey another chance at the third out. Maybe Terry didn't want to potentially bring Familia in with a runner on if the next guy got on against Harvey.

And I wouldn't have messed with any other relievers. If I go to the pen there just bring Familia in to close the door.

I'd also now seriously consider giving Familia game two off.

Of course if Clippard or Reed loses a one run lead in the ninth today I'm a moron

The darker colored card is the same design as the Topps 1961 World Series cards. The lighter blue border card is a "screwin' around" variation.
