I first noticed myself doing that in 1999. Also, when the season ended, I calculated that Citi Field would host between one and nine games. They've already played four, and it's now guaranteed to be at least five.

If I allow it, I can drive myself crazy thinking through the possibilities. With a 2-0 lead, this isn't a must-win for the Mets, but it is a must-win for the Cubs. Therefore, it's a must-win for the Mets, because we must deprive the Cubs of winning a must-win game. (In the spirit of Kill Kill Kill, of course.) I want to see this series end in four games; let's go all Brett Anderson on the next two Cubs starters. Although Lester and Arrieta proved that they're not all that scary, I'd rather not see either one of them again.

I'm still not one of those fans. But it's not unreasonable to be aware that things can go wrong, even if you don't believe in fate. Anything can happen in a single game, and the stakes are still fairly high, because there's a significant difference between being up 3-0 and 2-1.

I don;t often buy into "character" arguments like this but Mike F. Francessa of all people yesterday noted a key difference between the Mets & Cubs is our side has a lot more experience and whatever added value that Crusty Veteran Savvy provides. We got plenty of distinguished elder statesmen like Grandy, Cuddy, Colon, Uribe, Johnson & Wright. Their side only has old farts like David Ross and veteran fuckups like Fernando Rodney. I think Houston didn't hold on in part because they were just younger and dumber than Kansas City. What do you think?

So what's up with this Hendricks guy? (other than him not being a left-handed guitarist from Seattle) - 25 y/o RHP in his 2nd ML season -- 13 starts in 2014 [7-2, 2.46, 7th in ROY] and a full season this year: 8-7 (not many decisions for 32 starts), 3.95, 1 CG, 180 IP - Two lifetime appearances vs the Mets: a win on June 30 of this year: 6 shutout innings on 3 hits, 1 BB. Also won a game last season: 7 IP, 1 R, 3 H - originally an 8th round draft pick by Texas out of Dartmouth. Dealt to Cubs July 31 of 2012 for Ryan Dempster. - 6' 3" / 190 from Mission Viejo, CA (Keith, tell us about his high school) - doesn't walk many (2.2/g) or give up the long ball (< 1.0/g) very often. - Tougher on RHBs but doesn't have extreme splits. ERA rose somewhat in the 2nd half. - Started Game 2 of the series vs StL. Had a 6-1 lead heading into the 5th but, when he served up back to back HRs w/2 outs, Maddon yanked him one out short of qualifying for the 'W'. Cubs won the game, he didn't.

Hendricks has been mediocre this year, and his manager doesn't trust him at all, which explains all the no-decisions. But he was excellent when called up last year, his minor league numbers are impressive, he's still young, and he could be a good one. Let's postpone his rise to greatness for at least one game.

I think veteran leadership can help... in terms of players' long-term development, or weathering the vagaries of a long, bumpy season. But with this? Not so much. Except for Colon. Be they championships or sundae dishes, a rising Bartolo lifts all boats.

What blows my mind is that I thought the Mets would have trouble with the star pitchers. They can wear down the lesser dudes with walks and power, but the Mets strike out too much, and make too little contact and run too occasionally to steal a run when needed in a low-scoring affair. Or so I thought. That analysis has shown itself to be dead wrong. Let's chase this guy early.

As soon as the show let out people were agog over the WP K. My brother had to catch the Metro North so I walked crosstown with Howie and Josh and heard the final out just as I got to the 3rd ave. 7 stop. Drawback -- Heartland Brewery was full of clueless tourists and the TVs had bad reception, and the beer was too expensive. Bonus -- Joe had a superb band, was in good humor, covered Bowie's 'Scary Monsters'; the Beatles' 'Girl'; and Televison's 'See No Evil.'

My dad -- a.k.a. Mr. FaFiF from the Game Seven 1986 thread -- enjoyed NLCS Game Three, though probably not as much as he did NLDS Game Five (he didn't nod off during the Dodger clincher). He did think he was witnessing another clinching when it was over. "A great tradition since 1908 has been maintained," he declared. Had to break it to him that he was either prescient or 24 hours early. Also had to report three times in the five minutes that followed the last out -- because he kept asking -- that a) the game was indeed over and b) the Mets had indeed won. So he needs a little reinforcement these days. OTOH, this time, per special request, I brought pizza, and pizza makes everything championship.
