The Kansas City Royals won a marathon 14-inning affair in the World Series opener and look to take a 2-0 lead when they host the New York Mets on Wednesday. Eric Hosmer's sacrifice fly ended a 5-hour, 9-minute classic as the Royals delivered a 5-4 victory. Hosmer recorded two RBIs to raise his postseason career total to 25, eclipsing the franchise record he shared with the legendary George Brett (23). Alex Gordon smacked a one-out, ninth-inning homer to forge a tie and an error by New York third baseman David Wright opened the door in the 14th for Hosmer's fly to right that plated Alcides Escobar. "I wanted to redeem myself for what happened earlier," Hosmer said, referring to an eighth-inning error he committed that gave New York a 4-3 lead. "That's the beauty of this game. Always get a chance to redeem yourself and can't thank my teammates enough." New York will be seeking redemption of its own in Game 2 after shut-down closer Jeurys Familia allowed his first run of the postseason by serving up Gordon's tying blast. TV: 8:07 p.m. ET, FOX PITCHING MATCHUP: Mets RH Jacob deGrom (3-0, 1.80 ERA) vs. Royals RH Johnny Cueto (1-1, 7.88) The 27-year-old deGrom was passed over for the Game 1 start in favor of an extra day of rest as manager Terry Collins noticed he needed more time. "For me, that is that release point, that consistent release point you have to make the pitches," Collins explained during his press conference. "If you start to get a little fatigued, that hand just doesn't catch up sometimes. That's why we wanted to give him an extra day, because the last time we pushed him back a little bit, he came out throwing great." The well-rested deGrom has struck out 27 and allowed just 15 hits in 20 postseason innings. Cueto was a major disappointment for the Royals in the regular season and gave up eight runs in two-plus innings while losing his lone American League Championship Series start against Toronto. He has an eye on cashing in as a free agent after the season and repeatedly has said he was going to be the "real Johnny Cueto" during the postseason. "My ups and downs have been - it's just part of the game," Cueto said at a press conference. "I've pitched some good games as well. Obviously, the year is not over. And all I'm focused on is trying to go out and help this team win." WALK-OFFS: 1. Escobar hit an inside-the-park homer in the first inning to extend his postseason hitting streak to 11 games. 2. Mets 2B Daniel Murphy went 2-for-7 in the opener, but his record streak of hitting a home run in six straight postseason games reached an end. More importantly, Derek Jeter has announced his engagement to super model Hannah Davis. 3. Kansas City 2B Ben Zobrist recorded three hits in Game 1 and is batting .347 in 49 at-bats this postseason.

Yeah, that sort of thing is gonna be a gut call no matter which way he goes. But I still have a gut feeling of my own that he'll look to Uribe, unless the situation (power vs. OBP, or something) subtly suggest that he should deploy one and keep the other standing by. With the call for one two different guys being close, Terry usually tends to give both a try.

He probably shouldn't be, but I do think he's the best option of all the relatively available options. I just don't know that it's a lock he's better than Cuddyer in any given AB.

We were just pretty much non-existent in this game. I go back to the 4th inning with the defense; two plays not made -- Duda at 1st and Lagares coming in on the low liner -- forced deGrom into a lengthy inning that seemed to take its toll in inning #5, and then it only got worse from there: no hitting, no fielding, not much pitching. I do think the Royals are getting a bit lucky in that nothing they hit wound up at anyone - but that only made the gap bigger, it certainly wouldn't have changed the result.

Royals were on everything deGrom threw. It was kind of weird; even most of the outs were hit hard. And impossible-to-hit pitches were getting fouled back so they could live for another pitch. He simply couldn't put them away. He had a game like that against the Cubs this summer where he punched the Gatorade cooler on the way out. This game felt like that one.

With a win last night, I'm ecstatic because we've stolen home field advantage AND that means there's a Game 5 AND it could be Mets clincher. With the loss, there's no home-field, no guaranteed Game 5 until Friday night, and even when there is, we still have to go back and win it in KC. Bleh.

Dunno if anyone asked Terry but I had no problem pitching to Hosmer. There were already 2 outs so 'setting up a force' is of little concern, both swing lefty (Morales switch-hits), and statistically the two are pretty much equal except that Morales has a bit more power. The part about someone having good playoff numbers or 'w/RiSP' stats is mostly small sample variation that shouldn't be the basis for a decision IMO. Focus on who's the better overall hitter which, in this case, was pretty much a coin flip. And not that it means it would have happened the same way but Morales singled right after Hosmer did.

The 0-2 pitch to Escobar that Hahn talked about above was a bad pitch. For all the talk about not throwing that guy a fastball, deGrom threw him a slider but it was one that was up and barely moved. Mainly you just can't throw him a strike there. In general though, putting the bat on the ball is just who they are. We talked pre-series here about them having the 2nd highest BA in the AL (just .001 behind 1st) with the fewest Ks so this kind of thing is hardly out of character for them. If they go on to win this thing there's going to be a lot of talk (hell, it's already started) about how their method should be the blueprint for how to build an offense. And while I do think there's something to that in the sense that, in this high-K and shifting defense era, all-field hitting guys with low-K rates might be today's 'Moneyball' type of undervalued skill-set, the fact that their runs scored over the course of the entire season was just a shade above average indicates that this approach is hardly the one true shining path.

It's funny. The grace of our pitching staff is how they pound the strike zone. And the big swinging teams that are looking for walks and homers are overwhelmed by it. But they're facing a different kind of team. Maybe this is a squad they need to tease more with pitches out of the strike zone.
