The Mets in the NLCS

Benjamin Grimm
Oct 16 2015 08:03 AM

The Mets are about to play in their eighth National League Championship Series.

They've won this series four times: 1969 (Braves), 1973 (Reds), 1986 (Astros) and 2000 (Cardinals) and they lost three times: 1988 (Dodgers), 1999 (Braves) and 2006 (Cardinals).

As in the NLDS thread, active Mets players are in bold, although you won't see a lot of that here. At least, not yet.

Re: The Mets in the NLCS

That was nice of them to play highlights from 1988 game 7 against the Dodgers with Ronnie in the booth.

No to mention me, I was right at the perfect age such that that series scarred me for life.

That's crazy. In one weekend Familia just tied the Mets record for career NLCS saves.

Re: The Mets in the NLCS

Pretty interesting that the Mets swept the Braves in the first-ever NLCS and got no saves from Taylor and McGraw.

How strange a pitching performance was Nolan Ryan in Game Three, taking over in the third inning and pitching the rest of the way for the win? Is there any post-season parallel?

Madison Bumgarner, last year. Took over World Series Game 7 in the fifth inning and pitched the rest of the way (albeit for a save, not a win).

Moe Drabowsky, 1966: came on in the third with one out and the bases loaded, walked a man to drive in a run but finished the game with no further scoring and got the win.

Pedro did something similar in the '99 alcs.

correction it was the alds against the Indians

6 scoreless innings in relief in Game 5. The man was a pitching god.

Re: The Mets in the NLCS

Longest postseason relief pitching appearance was Jesse Barnes of the NY Giants in the 1921 World Series.

Yankees got 3 against Fred Toney in the top of the first with 2 outs.
Barnes comes in (inheriting 1 runner) and gets out of the inning. Pitches the next 8 innings for the win.

Not just scoreless, but no hits!

It was actually Pedro's day to pitch but since he'd tweaked his back in an earlier game the Sox tried to rest him. Bret Saberhagen and Derek Lowe were unable to contain Cleveland, so Pedro had to pitch after all.

Saying that was a strange series would be an understatement -- after Bartolo Colon out-dueled Pedro in Game 1, he lasted just 1 inning in Game 4 giving up 7 ER in a 23-7 loss.

Re: The Mets in the NLCS

Through Game 3, the following Mets still have not yet appeared in the NLCS:

[list:rh3j2fo2]Steven Matz, Bartolo Colon, Sean Gilmartin, Hansel Robles

Kirk Nieuwenhuis, Kevin Plawecki, Matt Reynolds[/list:u:rh3j2fo2]

Colon, Robles, and Matz appeared in the NLDS. (And unless he "naps funny" during the day today, Matz will appear tonight.)

The other four have not appeared at all in the postseason so far.

I'd love to see Reynolds get in, just so he can be the second person to make a postseason appearance with no previous MLB games.
