Chicago's signature dish

So now we have two cities with signature dishes playing October baseball. So now people are going to argue Chicago vs. New York pizza. I'm sure that will be what the politicians from the two cities will wager on the outcome.

But that's not right.

My daughter lives in Chicago. She says that no one there thinks pizza is the city's signature dish. Instead, it's the Chicago hot dog, which leads to heated arguments and condemnation if anyone strays from the traditional combination. New York, of course, has Nathan's, which are great, but are only just the starting point for a Chicago hot dog.

Chicago hot dog
An all-beef hot dog with yellow mustard, fresh relish, chopped onions, sport peppers (a mildly hot pepper packed in vinegar), tomato slices, a sprinkle of celery salt and a big dill pickle on a poppy seed bun (there aren't a lot of poppy seeds -- not like a bagel. Just a few baked into the bread.)

Asking for ketchup will get you kicked out of the restaurant.

I first had one when I visited Chicago at Petrillos, which is one of the originators of the hot dog and listed as one of the top restaurants of any kind in the city. On the east coast, you can get a pretty good one at Sonic (Petrillos uses fresh relish; Sonic uses jarred). I usually like my hot dogs with just some mustard, but this combination is definitely worth it.

Chicago style pizza is not pizza. It's quiche.

Confession: I dress up my mule in this exact same set of condiments.

I have no love for mustard, and although I like hot peppers, I leave them off my Chicago dog. But other than that, yes, they're fantastic.

And I'm a big Lou Malnati's fan, but seriously, there's no comparison on the pizza front.

As a city boy, born, raised, and matured, I'm pretty fuggin' parochial about New York-versus-YourTown food wars, in general. That said, well-assembled Chicago dogs have it on NY kraut-and-mustard (which I really like) all day, every day, and 3-4 times on snow days.

Also, Italian beef is another contender for Official Chicago Foodstuff, yeah? (You want it wet, with giardiniera, not sweet peppers.)

Shows us why Chicago is the second city. If I want a hot dog, I'll eat a hot dog. If I want a salad, I'll eat a fucking salad. When was the last time you walked into Nathans, or stood by your corner Sabrettes and wished you could order a salad to go with your hot dog? Never, I'd guess. And if you did, you should move to Chicago, you wuss.

The first time I was presented a Chicage hotdog fully dressed I thought it was absurd and crazy. Then I tried it, and I became a convert. It may look strange, but when properly executed it is amazing.

I will sometimes dress up a hot dog or two with a bunch of the stuff
pictured. Much more prefer a) chili dog, b) German mustard and
sauerkraut, c) or spicy brown mustard and Sabrett's push cart onions.

I've never been to Chicago (I'm probably the only poster here who
can say that) so I've never had an authentic hot dog or that stuff
they think is pizza.

Chicago's signature dish is "Existential-but-Joyous Progressive Rock Fusion Served with a Side of Bright, Dominating, Horn Lines."

I have also never been to Chicago.

I'm with you on the first point, also, a dog with chili and onions, or kraut and mustard is where I'm at.

I expected a totally different answer concerning what FMan puts on his 'hotdog'.

You could (can?) get a Chicago hot dog at the Shake Shack at Citi Field.

Never been to Chicago and never had Shake Shack. I need
to live more, now I'm getting depressed.
