once a player has a somewhat streaky and ineffective season around an injury, he's basically done for his career. clearly release him.

Once a player has that much invested in him, he's impossible to move and you hope you can at least wring minimal production out of him. I expect that they will do just that, occasionally spelling Duda at first, and Conforto and Grandy in the outfield. He'll also do the post-game interviews with Steve Gelbs when he hits a sacrifice fly to drive in a run in a game once a month.

Yes, he'll be an expensive reserve player. I don't think he'll earn his salary, but I think he'll be a good guy to have on the bench and to spell Duda at first from time to time.

Juan Uribe, Kelly Johnson, Juan Lagares, and Wilmer Flores all had a lower OBP. (Also Plawecki and Nieuwenhuis and Ceciliani and Muno and Recker)

I'm not really sure I care what they're making. I care how about how much they contribute to winning, and Cuddyer, in his worst year in a long time, and marred by injury, was better than various other players last year, 2 of who, right now, might be 2016 starters. (and were for most of last year) Safe money's on Cuddyer to contribute more, at least offensively, to the offense in 2016.

From what I can gather, ceetar assigns absolutely no value to the amount of money a player makes in assessing that player's value to a team. Nor does he distinguish corner outfielders with middle infielders. In fact, from the Salary thread, it's not clear whether ceetar really understands the concept of money. I think it would be really fun to know ceetar in real life and to do lots of business with him.

NEW YORK -- New York Mets outfielder Michael Cuddyer underwent surgery Thursday to repair a core muscle injury, the team announced. The procedure took place at the Vincera Institute in Philadelphia. Cuddyer, 36, had a disappointing first season with the Mets. He hit .259 with 10 homers and 41 RBIs in 379 at-bats. Cuddyer is due to make $12.5 million next season. With Michael Conforto, Curtis Granderson and Lucas Duda all expected to be regular players next season, Cuddyer's playing time could further diminish in 2016. "Core" is abdomen, hip or pelvic, I think.

Maybe that was the issue and he has a bounceback year. It would be nice to platoon Granderson with an effective Cuddyer.

He was at one (maybe more?) of the postgame World Series press conferences, along with Terry and Curtis. And I'm still trying to figure out why. It isn't as though he was a major contributor. Did anyone ask him why he was up on the podium? If so, what was his reply? Later

I truly wanted Cuddyer to do well, but he had a injury riddled and very disappointing season. Hopefully, he wil be healthy and have a much better season. He could be very helpful as a right handed pinch hitter, DH in AL cities, spelling Duda against tough lefties, and 4th or 5th outfielder.

I'm fine with Cuddyer being a bench player, team spokesperson, club- house coach, DL vs AL... he just better not be the starting LF next year hernia or no hernia and Ceetar's needing to assess his spring.

I'm not the one assessing him. I just am capable or reading a stat sheet and trusting a LONG history of being very good when not injured. Conforto had a good month and 2 bad ones and you're all ready to hand him the job, no questions asked. But then many of you criticized me when I told you Duda was a very good player, something he's been for a long time now. So what do you know? You can joke all you want about me, your opinions based on nothing won't sway mine based on statistics..

It was a dumb signing, many people here thought so at the time. And now he gets a contractual $4 mil raise. You can joke about me in 2016 if you're right... "safe money's" on Cuddyer to be mediocre more...

I bet he's at least 12% better than average next season. also, btw, it doesn't matter if the runs are scored by the left fielder or the shortstop, as long as they're scored. Even if you have above average offense for a shortstop, it might not be enough to score more runs than the other team.

You can cite whatever stats your want, I have a computer too! Fact is he didn't earn his keep, and now they have to give him a raise when the money on this team doesn't exactly flow like Guinness on St. Pat's Day.

I think we saw from the number of plate appearances Cuddyer got in the World Series that he's in a show-me situation. If he gets a lot of starts, it probably means he's earned them, or injuries have left them without better options. My main disappointment in him last season was his declining to play third. He saw first hand that Campbell was performing like a liability. He said he wasn't comfortable. But with Wright out four months, he had ample time to make himself comfortable. His utility was, to me, part of the justification for his signing.

It's crazy. I know it doesn't matter a lick when it comes to performance but it's crazy how old he looks. I don't get that. He's 36. He's four years younger than me. But he looks older than Bob Geren. He looks like one of those guys who shows up for some reunion event where everyone says "Wow, Michael Cuddyer looks great. I bet he could still play right now." Except everyone really knows he can't.
