Todd Frazier

A note I saw from David Schoenfield on ESPN:

So here's an idea: Move David Wright to first base, acquire Frazier, then trade Lucas Duda for bullpen help or a center fielder. The Mets were willing to trade Zack Wheeler for a year and two months of Carlos Gomez. Would they trade Wheeler for two seasons of Frazier?

I'm uncomfortable with that.

Don't think Wright is a surefire success at 1st base offensively or defensively, much less 3rd. Not convinced that Frazier necessarily has a next 2 years that much better than Duda's next two. It's a little too best-case-scenario-ish for me.

Re: Todd Frazier

I like and want Frazier but I want to try to fit him somewhere, not move Duda and Wright.

Which probably means he's not a great fit for the Mets.

Re: Todd Frazier

He was the hot speculation trading target earlier this year, when wright's return/status wasn't known.
But I'm with JCL on this one. No incremental benefit to doing this, not even knowing who the Mets would give up.

Re: Todd Frazier

I don't know. I'm not crazy about this idea. First off, if we got Todd Frazier, couldn't he just play first base? Or OF? I thought one of the draws to Frazier was that he was versatile. If you're going Wheeler for Frazier, and then putting him in a corner OF, while platooning Granderson and Lagares, I think that's worth considering, but even then I'm not sure.

Secondly, I don't think this makes a lot of sense if you trade Duda. First off, Duda's a better hitter. Not by much, but Duda has had a higher OPS each of the last three seasons. And Lucas is pretty good with the glove at 1B too. And this is before you take into account the ballpark. If Lucas Duda played in Cincinnati, I believe he would have an OPS in the mid 900's. He would hit 85 HR's in that ballpark.

The biggest problem with Duda is that he gets insanely hot for a while, but then does dick for the next 3 weeks. Maybe Frazier is more consistent than Lucas? But his second half numbers look pretty crappy in 2015.

I guess the key to all this would be what you could get for Duda in return. Maybe get a slugging outfielder?

But if that's the case, I'd just be looking to trade Wheeler for an outfielder and leave the big Dude (and Wright) alone.

Depends on which two seasons. The early seasons of Frazier, where Niles is lusting after Daphne, are better than the later ones where everybody started working out their 'issues' and the ensemble got less funny. Although the episode where he gives a speech in Klingon at the Bar Mitzvah is hilarious.

Wait, what?

Frazier has 4+ seasons under his belt. WATPs are going to follow him around all offseason, and all next season also, whether he gets moved this winter or not. But yeah, too many parts have to move, and too many things have to break right.

Cincinnati has made it clear that they're willing to deal anyone and everyone so, yeah, their guys are going to be in the rumor mill all winter.

I was thinking how this past season was Frazier's best but, checking the stats, his power jump came with a downturn in getting on base (never his strong suit to begin with - .309 OBP in 2015 and just .321 career) and his K-rate is always high. Plus his 25 1st half HRs turned into 10 over the 2nd half. That, in its own way, is just as streaky as Lucas.
I also thought of him as around longer but he didn't break in all that young (age 25, which isn't late but it's also hardly early for a 1st round pick) which is why he has just 4+ years under his belt as he turns 30 this winter.

I've also never bought into the idea that David needs to be slid across the diamond as some NYM fans have been trying to do for about 8 years now. He will eventually and maybe even sooner than later. But he also has earned the right to prove himself over a full season before he's the one making accommodations for imported players so, while Frazier's a nice fielder, this isn't the same as the Jeter/ARod situation.

And finally, the Frazier/Duda gap is just not enough (if it even exists) to justify this kind of fantasy rearranging of the chess pieces.

Re: Todd Frazier

Purported innate streakiness and all, Duda's a superior offensive player, and Frazier isn't THAT good defensively, AND they're the same age. The only way it really makes sense is if Frazier's selling price is lower than Duda's and/or they know a guy who absolutely NEEDS him some sweet Boo Radley action, and has centerfielder/shortstop to spare.
