Cricket

A few CPFers have asked me to teach them the ins and outs of cricket. If there's sufficient interest (say at least 5 of you) I will do it here on a collective basis over the winter.

It would also be beneficial to me to hone my teaching skills and also because cricket is not baseball and I right now I need a good distraction.

Cricket at Citi Field on Saturday.

I'd listen. I don't know how conductive posting is to learning. Feel like we need to get out to a park and watch, but I'm busy Saturday.

Re: Cricket

My cricket experience is limited to attending the Bermuda Cup Match for one afternoon back in 1993. I recall that every so often, something would happen and the crowds would go absolutely nuts. The atmosphere was great, but I had no idea what was happening. Then the players left the field for a tea break, and I decided to move on.

I've picked a basic idea of cricket over time, but much of it still baffles me so I'd be happy to get some instruction.

I have wanted to learn cricket for years. I actually got a Cricket for Dummies book out of the library back and wound up more confused than before I read it.

Baffling, incomprehensible sport. Wear a sweater. Play for a few hours, or a few days. I don't even know what the object is.

Just ask questions and it's all good. I've never met an American baseball fan who I couldn't explain cricket to.

I did not know about the Citi Field event but I just looked up who's playing -- there are 5 ICC Hall of Famers (Tendulkar, Warne, Lara, Muralitharan and Akram). Each of them in the Top 3 all-time in their respective roles. Of course, they're all in their mid-to-late 40's now. Given Tendulkar's presence I imagine the entire Indian-American population of NYC will be at Citi Field on Saturday.

Re: Cricket

Ticket prices for the cricket event range from $50-$175. Seems short-sighted to me because this is the type of event that should attract New York's cricket-loving immigrant communities who aren't necessarily able to pay those prices.

Re: Cricket

True that.

Then again Tendulkar's status in the Indian community is closer to Shiva than it is to man.

Re: Cricket

I think this will be great!

I was at a Brewer/Mets game in Milwaukee earlier this season and before the game I was filling out a scorecard to keep score. An Indian man and his friend were sitting behind me, saw the scorecard, tapped me on the shoulder and asked if I could "explain the rules of baseball" to them. Apparently, all he knew was that a player hitting the ball over the wall was a good thing. When I told him it would take a while to give him even the major points on the game, he asked me if it shared any rules with cricket. I asked him if he could "explain the rules of cricket" to me. We both laughed.

There were two home runs hit that game (one by each team). He cheered them both very enthusiastically.

Re: Cricket

I used to watch cricket matches while walking in Van Cortland Park many years ago. I didn't have time to learn the rules because I was usually on my way home from school. But it seemed fascinating and fun.
But now, if I were to hear a score like "127 runs, no out", I would think of the relentless pressure the KC lineup puts on the other team.

Thanks for the invite. Maybe I'll take an occasional peek at the thread(s).

Re: Cricket

Since cricket is played from both ends of the field (alternating every six deliveries (i.e. pitches)) , each cricket ground gives a unique name to each end. At Citi Field one end was called the "Dwight Gooden End". Anybody know what the other end was called?

Yes, they interviewed some Aussie fans on tv & on the PA system at Citi Field.

If it isn't the Tom Seaver End I may have to protest the proceedings.

Please explain "cricket ground". Is that what you call the cricket field? The catcher or team captain?

I meant the official attendance. It's normally on the official scorecard (box score) except it wasn't..

I would like to learn cricket, too. I dated a Brit for 5 1/2 years and spent a lot of time in England in that time period. He taught me the basics, but he wasn't the best teacher.

Re: Cricket

I learned a couple of things about cricket last weekend -

When you hit the ball out of the park it's 6 points. The equivalent of an inside the park home run is 4 points. And each side gets 10 outs.

Attended a test match in Sydney about 20 years ago (Sydney Cricket Grounds, where they had the Dodgers/DBacks play a few years ago to start the year).

I confess I was completely confused, but the copious amounts of Victoria Bitter consumed may not have helped.

Britain Is Introducing A Yellow Card/Red Card Disciplinary System

A trial in Britain this summer will result in the introduction of red and yellow cards for the worst offences, while lesser infractions, such as dissent, time-wasting, and excessive appealing, will bring an immediate five-run penalty.

It says something about the scoring system that five-run penalties can be levied for "lesser infractions."

That's pretty cool. Who was the opposition? FYI -- VB is like the worst shit you can drink down there -- Seo said it was the worst thing he ever tasted.
(My residence in Sydney is about the same distance from the SCG as Bobby V's (ex-)diner is from Citi Field).

I'll post my educational posts soon (apologies, but I fell way behind in my dissertation).

In the meantime, enjoy this video of Seth Efrican Dale Steyn, probably the fastest bowler currently going around, bowling at a GoPro camera.

The lessons to be taken from this video:

1. Bowlers deliver the ball at a similar speed to MLB pitchers (the fact they are allowed to take a run-up (like a javelin thrower) is offset by the fact their arm is required to be straight when delivering the ball -- try throwing a pitch without bending your elbow and see how difficult it is.

2. The fact the ball is (usually) delivered on the first bounce to hitters makes it harder to hit than a baseball because the ball not only moves through the air, but also deviates off the field (pitch). Also, batsman (hitters) don't know whether the ball is going to pass them near their head or at their feet.

3. Bowling (pitching) at a batsman's (hitter's) head is a legitimate tactic... and is the scariest thing about cricket.

4. Points (2) and (3) are the primary reason why cricket bats are wider than baseball bats.

This will never work. Unlike baseball, there are no substitutes in a cricket match (well, technically there are, but they are only allowed to field (play defense). The penalties for a time wasting are already pretty severe (captains are suspended for repeated offenses plus heavy financial penalties, everything else is a non-issue in my book.
