I know that I had originally said that there would be no first-round tiebreakers, but now that a poll has actually ended in a tie, the big shots in Stockholm are apparently getting jittery, so word came down that there was a change in policy. This tie-breaker poll will run for three days. Our first tiebreaker pits two Newsday covers against each other. Please vote for the cover you like best.

Matz all the way. Shining Star is boring, plus I like how the Yankees is only barely present on the Matz one, like "Oh, right, we should probably stick them on there somewhere"

I went with Matz, but don't find anything boring about Shining.

Agreed. A lot of distinct choices here: Matz vs. deGrom, blue vs. gray, energy stored vs. energy released, tan glove vs. blackish glove, bleeding layout vs. boxing layout. The main things they have in common: pursed mouths and indifferent headlines.

I voted for the deGrom cover. It's a more interesting photo (I think) and a better layout. Matz is half obscured by the headline, while with deGrom, only a part of his right leg is covered.

Got him in a classic pose from the chest up and you can see NEW YORK right above the headline. IMO both are good layouts, and deGrom is higher on my Mets totem pole, but Matz gets the vote because they got most of the NEW YORK in there.

The deGrom layout is FAR better, and edges out the slightly-more-pertinent headline on the other.

Maybe we can judge these by the sports stories that got pushed off the back page by each: US Women's World Cup victory; a NY Giant having his finger amputated.
