The Dan Warthen Slider

It's a coupla months old, but I just stumbled upon this FanGraphs article, which suggests that a big part of the success for the Mets pitching staff is that they're throwing a pitch not readily available to pitchers on other teams, a slider with a little less concern for break and a little more for power, tight spin, and location.

[list]“Dan Warthen helped me out with the grip during Spring Training. I threw it last year, but I didn’t really know how to throw a slider.” — Matt Harvey, 2012

“When I came here in September last year, Dan Warthen showed me how to throw a slider,” said a beaming Mejia, back in a major league clubhouse. “Then I threw it in winter ball. And now I throw it perfect.” — Jenrry Mejia, 2013

“[It has] small, quick, movement at the end. ... [I have] more command of it. ... [You throw it like a fastball, and] at the last point you just flick your fingers a little.” — Jeurys Famila, 2015

“I played with it a little bit to pick up the RPMs on my curveball.” — Noah Syndergaard, non-user, 2015[/list:u]

Srsly, I like Dan, although secrets don;t tend to last long in baseball as Keith likes to remind us.

Re: The Dan Warthen Slider

There have been a LOT of "Warthen slider" references in the last few months in various, analytically-minded precincts of the Met-ernet. I had wondered about the source.

Makes sense, I suppose.

Roger Craig kept the secret of the splitter to himself until after he left the Mets. He never taught it to any of the other pitchers on the 1962 Mets.

Dan Warthan's slider has broken more hearts than Bette Davis' eyes.

I've actually linked this article here before. But hey, maybe I'm biased because I like Eno.

I'm not calling for Warthen to be fired anymore, but I still don't like him and think the Mets could do better.(I don't think they necessarily would if they'd have fired him years ago either though) My complaints were never that he was useless though. He was supposedly influential in Dickey's knuckleballs changing speeds too. I just think he seems poor in getting pitchers prepared, particularly to start the season, and guys that don't fit in (i.e. don't really feel comfortable throwing a slider) aren't helped out as much as they could be.

Either way, having this set of pitchers to work with certainly helps.
