Geren Transferrin'

Ken Rosenthal reporting that Bob Geren is leaving his role as Mets bench coach to work in the same capacity for Dave Roberts and the Dodgers. The Dodgers were reportedly impressed by how level the Mets' bench remained last year when the dugout was bloated by the Mets 37-player roster, as well as it's ability to maintain natural wood appearance despite being constructed from recycled plastic composites. I wouldn't have said so five years ago, but I'm rooting for Wally. I, for one, will miss those beefy forearms. I heard that Wally will be the bench coach on the days when the Mets face RH starters and Teufel when they see a left-hander.

1. He's from San Diego. 2. I imagine a lot of his connections are with West Coast organizations. 3. He's been stuck behind Terry for a while, and Terry just got a new contract. 4. He interviewed for the Dodgers managerial opening, so maybe made some nice impression and riding side-saddle for a rookie with a billion-dollar roster may be a better perch for the next opening. 5. Maybe the DJs offered him mo' money. 6. Probably better not to sit still too long as a bench coach. Inertia's a bitch. The Mets get off to a bad start in 2016 and their staff gets gutted, Geren's operating out of Tuscaloosa. He's got a new honeymoon period now in LA and a whole new bunch of contacts to be made for the next job.

Dave Roberts will be on the hot seat in LA, so Geren will be the reliable backup in case anything goes sideways. Solid baseball man, yada, yada, yada. He should immediately get to work on Justin Turner's beard; it annoys me.

Reportedly having elderly parents and in-laws in southern California was a major factor in deciding to move back to the west coast. I can't fault anyone for moving to be near family.

Yeah! Apparently there's concern that Dave Roberts isn't getting to choose any of his own coaches. Plus they lost Greinke to a div rival. That's the best! As expressed in that other thread, I got the impression that our guys liked Geren despite his refusal to take an appropriate "coach" uni number, and I think it's kinda important we get an actual competent capable-of-taking-over-in-the-event-of-emergency bench coach to replace him. Let's have none of those Wilpon-style show promotions here.

I read that he was going to the West Coast because of "family matters." Which means that he's not trying to get closer to Yasiel Puig, but to Steve Urkel.

I imagine that Terry's got enough juice to get the guy he wants, and a long enough track record in multiple organizations to know who he wants, including knowing which graduates of the Mets developmental system are sharp-minded forward thinkers and which are deadwood place holders. The flip side of that coin, though, is that this opening comes with Alderson on the mend, and Terry is a good enough company man that he may roll over for a Wilpon hire. I don't think it'll break that way, but it certainly could. My prediction: Tony Peņa, currently coaching first for the Yankees.

I've never heard of him! I just Googled "Dick Scott" and the first hits are for a Chrysler dealer in Plymouth, Michigan. We may need to send MGIM to scout the place out.

Interesting choice. He succeeded Terry as minor league field coordinator, and stayed in the pipeline as director of player development. So he knows the generation of players coming up that follows the ones Terry worked with. It really departs from understanding of bench coach as in-game-strategy sounding board, usually staffed by former managers or managers in waiting. He has managed in the minors for other systems though.
