5th starter

If Colon wants too much money to come back, we are looking at a Montero/Verrett/Gilmartin competition in March for that last spot. Whoever wins would need to hold it down for at least two and more than likely three months until Wheeler is ready to come back.

Are you comfortable with this? I am sure that you can also pick up one or two guys who are just trying to hang on in January on minor league contracts as well (just to add a few options to the competition).

Re: 5th starter

I'd like the fifth starter, whoever he (or she) is, to be someone the Mets would feel comfortable giving 30 starts to, because it may very well turn out that we'll need those 30 starts. They should also plan on who their sixth starter will be, because one of the top four may turn out to be fully or partially unavailable before Wheeler returns. If Wheeler returns.

I mean, how confident are we that Steven Matz will start anywhere close to 30 games?

Would just like to know what the deal is with Montero. He was The Next Big Thing and just fell off the table. Is he hurt? Mentally unbalanced? Cursed? He was a control guy with a good fastball that came up and walked the ballpark, and never seems to have fully recovered.

I'd stick with what we have if Colon says no. Verrett seems to have shown fifth-starter ability; Gilmartin did a fine job as a long man, and Montero seems to have recovered from whatever was wrong with him.

It's been mostly silent on that front, which isn't comforting.

I'm not comfortable with the current roster as per 5th starter. Want one more guy. Would prefer someone better and younger than Colon. Fister maybe? I wouldn't even worry myself about the rotation getting clogged. If it happens, it happens, and you trade someone. There will be roughly 50 pitchers (that might be low) on the DL between now and then.

I'm okay with the minor-league FA shotgun approach. There is safety in numbers.

But we are getting Colon. We ARE getting Colon, right, guys?

Just read somewhere that he was about to make a start in winter ball.

Montero was injured, though no one could nail down specifically what it was. That led to some frustration in the front office. But it looks like he's fully healthy now and I think he's been playing winter ball effectively. The injury is worrisome, so Verrett and Gilmartin are currently better choices, but if he's healthy, he's a viable option.

On Mets Hot Stove, John Harper suggested that Cliff Lee or Tim Lincecum might be available on a one-year deal.

Lincecum is 31 and Lee is 37. Lincecum seems less likely to be washed up, although he's not at all what he used to be. He might serve the purpose though.

I'm afraid whatever bad magic happened to Lincecum might rub off on deGrom.

On the other hand, he could team with d'Arnaud and become what I expect would be MLB's first all-half-Filipino battery.

please, no wasting of of (apparently) significantly limited resources on a 5th starter when we've got major league-ready pitchers stacking up like planes over LaGuardia on Thanksgiving. We've still got to splurge and find a marginal improvement over Nieuhenheis!

Exactly. Gerardo Parra don't come cheap.

Somewhere, there is a blowhard Filipino uncle already bragging about this.
