Odd Memories from Year's Ago

I have no idea what made me think of this...
In middle school we had a bus driver named Marvin. He had greased-
back hair and Elvis-esque sideburns. Marvin was by far the youngest
and coolest driver/custodian in the district. He installed an 8-track in
his bus and four speakers and used to play Black Sabbath for us on our
morning commute. Sometimes some Zed Leppelin.
Thinking back, it's pretty comical like something you'd see in movie.

We had a school bus driver for a while who was a sax player in a ska band. That was pretty cool back then.

It's pretty cool now. It's one step beyond, is what it is

The best part about Marvin was the four-way speakers. We can forget how music sounds far worse than it used to, in part because the digital revolution led people to invest (to the extent that anybody invested) in quantity, but nobody cared anymore about good speakers or compressed data?

And we barely notice it anymore, because if we hear the first notes of "Good Times, Bad Times" or "Moving in Stereo," partly our brains fill in the gaps of how it used to sound, and partly because we've just sort of forgotten that everything used to sound so much better.

Long live Marvin and his bus-wiring ways.

Re: Odd Memories from Year's Ago

No fun bus drivers here. Buuuut my flaky-ass third-grade teacher with Pat Benatar hair once teased a "special guest" visit in class for a solid month, mentioning that the guest was an "artist," a "musician," and "will play a song with you guys." The "guest" ended up being her, accompanied by her keytar-playing boyfriend with Billy Idol hair. We were... a little disappointed.

She was let go later that school year, in May, when the aforementioned boyfriend came in to physically threaten one of the fifth-graders who had been giving her static. (Nice going, Ms. Weisbond!) My last two weeks of third grade were spent flipping baseball cards while our sub dozed in the corner. My school was weird.

Re: Odd Memories from Year's Ago

I have a school bus story.

When I was in high school my district went from one to two high schools, which were about a mile away from each other in one corner of the school district (Half Hollow Hills, for you Long Islanders). Not only was the districting of the two high schools random, but those of us who were in 10th grade at the time of the split had our choice of schools, meaning that school buses for both schools were going through all of the developments for a couple of years.

Anyway, I went to one high school, and for a time I had a boyfriend in the other school. Because of the very weird busing, I was able to grab a school bus that made one stop in my development, then picked up students for my high school in his development. However, the bus driver had no issue with picking up my boyfriend and making an extra stop in front of his school on his way to my school, thus giving us a chance to hang out together despite the fact that we attended different schools.

There was no similar arrangement after school, but since the late buses stopped at both high schools routinely we were able to ride home together without any special arrangements.

This is a great thread with some good stories so far and I hope it's a hit!

Its been so long ago that I don't have many memories of travelling to/ from school other than the horses that pulled my chariot were white.

I was in bus #2 in elementary school, but we had no buses after that. The buses served all four Valley Stream elementary schools (and as a result the start/end time of school rotated every year) the years when you were the late school the buses, despite the staggered start/end, were often late.

The Kid Inside (from "Is There Life After High School")
by Craig Carnelia

There’s a kid inside, and I have him with me always.
There’s a kid inside, walking down old high school hallways.
There’s a kid inside, at a desk, at a dance, in the halls, in the showers.
There’s a kid inside, to this very day.

And he makes a try for that high pop fly that I fumbled one September.
And he makes a fuss over some A plus that I shouldn’t still remember.
And he goes along getting hurt, getting mad, fighting fights that are over.
And unless I’m strong all my senses are carried away.

I can feel my hand (my trembling hand) on Michelle's angora sweater.
I can hear my band (that awful band), only now it sounds much better.
I can see the kid—the kid I use to be: on the stage, on the field, on the lunch line.
I can feel him tugging at me;
every time I think I don’t care, I blink
And he’s there again, he’s there again:
Fighting ancient wrongs, humming old hit songs in my head;
Singing "come along, come along, come along for the ride"
To a time and place I could not forget if I tried.

There again, he’s there again.

And I never know when the breeze’ll blow with a rush of old sensations;
Why the kid should wake and my heart should ache every time I smell carnations.
Something rings a bell (anything at all), all it takes is the slam of a locker
Or the switch from summer to fall — a change of season seems barely reason
But there he goes again, hummin’ his songs,
Fighting ancient wrongs, humming old hit songs in my head,
Singing "come along, come along, come along for the ride"
To a time and place I could not forget if I tried.

There he goes again,
Hummin’ his songs
He’s there again, there again
There’s a kid inside.
