Um, what??

Per Sherman...

Joel Sherman
@Joelsherman1
I have learned Paul DePodesta leaving #Mets to run the NFL Cleveland Browns as executive VP, answerable only to team owner/pres.

God, is working for the Wilpons so bad that you go to the dumpster fire that is the Mistake by the Lake?

Re: DePo to … the Browns?

Well, DePodesta did play college football (he isn't really built like Jonah Hill) and I suppose sports management is sports management.
The fact that the Browns are such a dysfunctional outfit means there's probably nowhere to go but up.

Isn't he also a Cleveland native? I think his 1st job was with the Injuns.

It would be funny if Jonah Hill just showed up and assumed the job. How long do you think it would take for the Browns to notice?

This news is so strange I don't know what to do with it. I feel like the Browns should give us like a draft pick or something.

Re: DePo to … the Browns?

I'm kinda hoping that the New York Giants lure Terry Collins away as their new head coach. He's probably qualified; he has the same initials as the guy who just resigned.

Yeah but the Browns routinely shit-can their front office guys and coaches pretty quickly. They'll be going on their seventh GM in 12 years, and 6th HC in 9 years (and those numbers don't include Mike Holmgren, who was a team president in those years). Job security is not guaranteed with that team.

Re: DePo to … the Browns?

Oh I realize that it's hardly a dream job among football insiders. But of course if it was it probably wouldn't be available to him, so he jumps on this opportunity hopefully with some promises of autonomy.

Sherman NY Post: The Browns began pursuing [DePodesta] shortly after the Mets lost the World Series.
Cleveland and football have always held a special place in my heart,” DePodesta said in a statement issued by the team. “It was 20 years ago this month, after pursing my first love of football and looking at every possible job in the NFL, that I got the biggest break I could imagine – a job offer from the American League Champion Cleveland Indians. As excited as I was then, I am even more excited now to return to Cleveland and to try to help the Browns".

Re: DePo to … the Browns?

Mets issue statements of praise from Jeff and Sandy but don't mention that an exhaustive search for a successor is underway. I'm tellin ya, even dumb businesses make it a point to say that when one of their guys leaves.

Hmmm, 28th round in 2014 as a SS ... I had no idea. Did he even play baseball in college??

Anyway, the Padres would no longer hold his draft rights and I'm sure the Browns would LOVE to swap him for DePo if that what was needed to complete the hire.
And, hey, he might be worth a shot. He has a good enough arm - or at least we know he can throw a good party!!! amarite folks?

Re: DePo to … the Browns?

Crazy Idea: how about Omar Minaya?

He was a terrific scout.

Just don't let him anywhere near the controls.

Re: DePo to … the Browns?

Also today the Mets said Kevin Morgan will replace Dick Scott as director of Player Development. Morgan got 1 at bat as a Met in 1997 and has worked in various organiational roles ever since under Phillips, Omar and Sandy regimes, i.e.: Wilpon.

Former Met statistician Ben Baumer on twitter raised the question of whether DePo's departure would leave any $$ to invest back in analytics saying current stat guy TJ Barra needed more staff. Said they were relatively understaffed in that department.

kinda sad.

Not that I'm necessarily doubting him or disagree that the Mets should add analytics guys, but grain of salt coming from a former employee.

Re: DePo to … the Browns?

I don't pay that much attention to who's who in the front office, so now that he's gone, can anyone tell me...

What did Paul DePodesta actually do?

Re: DePo to … the Browns?

Oversaw amateur scouting (read: draft king) and player development (read: minor-league major-domo).

Kevin Morgan will be the Mets minor-league on-field coordinator, not Player Development boss, as I understand it.

I have full faith in DePo to take the Browns to the Super Bowl. Figuratively speaking, I mean, because he's a healthy adult male w/operable digestive system. The on-field SB, though? Not so sure.

Re: DePo to … the Browns?

If Steve Schreiber is still involved in baseball (is he still alive?), I'd see if he would take the job with the Mets. IIRC he was once the Director of minor league player development and learned his organizational skills under a master of building a baseball organization - Frank Cashen.

As for DPD, he has strong organizational development skills and uses statistics as an analytical tool. Those are skills that can translate from one industry(sport) to another. It was a clever choice by the Browns and a possible indication that they want to start doing things right for a change. I hope they allow him to do his job as he learns the new sport.

Re: DePo to … the Browns?

Sandy -- “[DePodesta] was instrumental in what we’ve been able to do here over the last five years, some more public than others,” but at the same time we have a pretty strong organization, and I think we’ll be able to pick up the slack and Paul did a lot of different things, so [u:a3lg8s34]I don’t expect one person to take up the void[/u:a3lg8s34] that he creates. We will allocate his responsibilities in ways that in two people who are strong in various aspects. I am comfortable with where we are.”

Another $2 million salary expense trimmed from the budget. They'll be
swimming in cash before we know it.
