This is actually a 2015 death: Wayne Rogers, M*A*S*H's Trapper John, died on New Year's Eve at the age of 82.

This leaves the now 84 y/o Elliott Gould as the sole surviving (and original) portrayer of 'Trapper John'. Parnell Roberts, the TJ of the spinoff series, died in 2010 -- Trappers are being killed off in reverse order!!.

I kind of like it when actors or musicians (or even athletes for that matter) go into other lines of work instead of just being older versions of themselves for the rest of their lives.
In Rogers case, although he continued to act, he was already dabbling in financial management and investing when M*A*S*H was going on and that was in part of reason for his departure from the show. In recent years he could be seen on various financial shows on cable TV.
Supposedly considered first for the 'Hawkeye' role, he chose instead to be 'Trapper' but did so under the impression that the two were to be more or less co-equals. When it became apparent that his role was closer to that of a sidekick he tried to work out a deal where, instead of appearing in each week's show, his character would have a larger role only less often which would give him the occasional week off to pursue his non-acting work. When the powers at be didn't agree to his proposed arrangement he chose to leave. His last show was the one that closed out Season 3, the same as Henry Blake's last one only no one knew it at the time so he didn't get formally written out of the script. Instead Season 4 begins with Hawkeye returning from the R&R he was given after going a little nuts following Henry's death only to find that Trapper was rotated home while Hawk was away. He and Radar "just miss" Trapper's departing plane at the airport when they go to pick up replacement surgeon B. J. Hunnicut.

Rogers was in a lot of stuff although the only non-MASH role I ever saw him in was as an unnamed member of the prison/road gang in 'Cool Hand Luke'

I don't remember him from Cool Hand Luke. I do recall a show he did after M*A*S*H, called House Calls, that I watched at least a few times. I think it was based on a movie that starred Walter Matthau.

Re: Guess Who Died in 2016

His character didn't have a name (listed in the credits as simply 'gambler') but he did have speaking lines, most notably as the card dealer in the bunk house scene where Luke bluffs his way into winning the pot and his nickname: "Sometimes nothing can be a real cool hand". You'd certainly recognize him if you saw the flick again.
Harry Dean Stanton and Dennis Hopper are other recognizable bit players in that gang who were then near the beginning of what would be lengthy acting careers.

But I don't think there is a good answer for any child's death It bothers me a lot. We had a guest minister say once that death brings "glory to God" I almost got up and left but I couldn't because I was the communion assistant...

Child death (especially when violent or seemingly random) is pretty much Exhibit A in the argument against "Anything happens for a reason," isn't it?

It's amazing what dumb, dumb results can come from good-natured attempts at pithy wisdom in the wake of tragedy.

Agreed with the prior two posts, Michael Collins, Dogma, Quigley Down Under, Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves. All otherwise bad movies (to one degree or another) that were still eminently watchable thanks to his contributions.

Love, Actually, not so much. Bill Nighy (who I imagine frequently ran into Rickman at readings) almost made that bitter pill swallowable.

My grandmother. 91 years old. She more or less raised me until I was 3 years old.

Had not been well for some time, so not unexpected, and a 91 lived a great and wonderful life. It was her time.

Bad part is that she lived that live in South Korea, and so we didn't get to see each other nearly enough. My parents moving to the US has been great for the whole family, but there are obviously drawbacks. Being half a world away from loved ones is the worst of them all. Couldn't get there in time after she fell ill. Feel terrible about it.

Was, unequivocally, the greatest person in the world.

Re: Guess Who Died in 2016

The entire science fiction community is in shock to hear the death of David G. Hartwell.

Most readers probably don't know him, but fans and authors know him well. Hartwell has been editing science fiction books since the 60s. In the 80s, he founded the Timescape imprint, which published such books as Gene Wolfe's Book of the New Sun; Michael Bishop's Nebula winner No Enemy But Time; Windhaven, written by George R. R. Martin and Lisa Tuttle, as well as authors Afred Bester (though not his best work), Philip K. Dick, Jack L. Chalker, Jack Vance, David Gerrold, and Roger Zelazny.

David was also an anthologist, doing a yearly volume of best science fiction from 1996-2013 and a similar series of best fantasy for eight years. His The Dark Descent (and sequels) collected some of the best horror stories over the years; it's a must read for those interested in the history of the genre. He also did a couple of dozen stand alone anthologies.

He edited the small press magazine The Little Magazine and also The New York Review of Science Fiction. A review of mine appeared in the latter, and I still have no idea how he got it (It was written for another magazine, which went on hiatus, then showed up in the NYRoSF. I asked him how it happened, but he couldn't remember).

He was also a fan. He's been the guiding force behind the World Fantasy Convention, making it into what it is now -- a convention for professionals in the field. But he showed up at other conventions, too. He's been a regular at Albacon, appearing on panels and having a table in the dealer's room. I've shared quite a few panels with him, and one year did an interview with him as part of our writer's workshop.

He was known for his garish outfits and for singing "Teen Angel" at cons.
(That's him winning the Hugo Award.

His passing was a shock. He was in good health, but fell, which led to bleeding on the brain. The news was reported last night, and the end was swift.

This has hit the field hard. Facebook is full of tributes to him and he was always friendly and encouraging to young writers. It is a sad and shocking loss.

Edgar Mitchell - 85

A name that should be more famous than it is, but these days doing a minor thing like walking on the moon doesn't even rate you an obit in some places [NY Post, NYDN] because I guess it would take away from the space required to report on who's fucking which Kardashian this week.

Apollo 14 astronaut Mitchell was the sixth of the 12 men in history to walk on the moon as he and Alan Shepard and Stuart Roosa (all now deceased) went in the first mission after the near disaster of Apollo 13
Of the 12 moon walkers five are now deceased as are eight of the 24 men to go to the moon (walkers + orbiters) and all of the survivors are now at least 80 years old, an age where losing one or two per year from this point forward is a likely scenario.
All of which means that it's quite conceivable that in the near future we'll hit a spot where not one man who went to the moon remains alive, something that most would have found impossible to believe when the Apollo program was going on in the early 70's.

Spare a thought for Denise Katrina "Vanity" Matthews, pop starlet and Prince protégé (during his Svengali days), who quit the biz after some serious drug problems that took her a while to overcome, dead at 57.

She had messed her body up pretty bad but dying 20 years sober is a moral victory worth noting.

And fare-thee-well to Boutros Boutros-Ghali.

He was the first secretary general of the UN not to get a second term. I always had thought he attained that dubious status because before him, each secretary general had represented a different continent, and there was a lot of pressure to elect an African. But as an Egyptian, he wasn't African enough, so they replaced him with a sub-Saharan African.

Turned out I was really wrong, and he lost his seat because of US opposition, led by then-Ambassador Madeleine Albright, apparently because he was reluctant to approve NATO bombing in Bosnia.

His weird compound name was because his grandfather Boutros Ghali was such a hero to the family, as the former prime minister of Egypt who was assassinated in office, that they changed the family name from Ghali to Boutros-Ghali.

Going back a few weeks we should note the passing of Signe Anderson, an original member of Jefferson Airplane who was replaced by Grace Slick.

She died the same day as the Airplane's Paul Kantner putting them in the company of John Adams and Thomas Jefferson, two figures whose fame is related who died the same day but not in the same place. Adams and Jefferson might not appreciate Kantner and Anderson joining their club, however.

I had a vague idea, but after going through the NYP & NYDN websites (plus a couple of other places as well) yesterday one would have thought we lost one of the most important people on the planet.
Not sure which is worse, the elevating of some third-rate reality TV "actress" to such heights or the continuing idea that mob culture is something to be celebrated. Big Angs don’t do one thing except make loud, Staten Island-accented scripted reality for us to enjoy. They don’t eat up people’s "Chopped" ingredients, they don’t nest in corny, extremely-made-over cribs, they don’t do barely anything but furtively sing the praises of episode sponsors for us. That’s why it’s a sin to make fun of Big Dead Ang.

Our hero was Andy Bathgate. The best line combos on other teams had nicknames. (this was years before the Rangers had the GAG - Goal A Game) line.)There were the Uke line (Stasiuk, Bucyk, Horvath) , the Kraut line (Lindsay Lichtenberger Sloane) and others. So, we decided to give a nickname to the #1 line of the Rangers. It was the ABC line. It stood for Andy Hebenton, Bathgate, and Camile Henry.

The father -- "Bull" Meacham -- dies towards the end of 'The Great Santini' as the result of a fighter jet training exercise accident but, despite the book being based on him, Conroy's father was quite alive when the book was published are reportedly enjoyed the fame it brought him even though it caused both a rift in the family and the old man to tone down his ways a bit.
I suspect 'Death of Santini' is based on reflections of the author's actual father actually dying but I don't know that for sure.

The odd thing about that pair is that young Frank Jr. looked nothing like young Frank Sr., but the older Junior got the more he began to look like the older version of Senior to the point where you could almost confuse the two.

In the heyday of the NASL, the world's biggest names came over to the US (Pelé, Beckenbauer, Best), but only after their legends had far outsized their remaining skills — a foreshadowing of the remains of David Beckham joining MLS. But Cruyff was the one who came over when he was still truly the best in the world. Only... his reputation hadn't reach America's shores and none of us knew he was twice the player (at that point) that Pelé was. And he was with one of the worst teams in the league (The Washington Diplomats) with a coach who had no idea how to deploy him and teammates who were reduced nearly to spectators.

A little Garry Shandling story: My cousin worked on the Larry Sanders show for 5 seasons. The first year, he went around the lot with a camcorder to show his mom what a typical day was like. When he told Garry what he was doing, Garry said, "Let's have some fun with this", and proceeded to host this video with a guided tour, and some really funny off the cuff bits. Truly a good guy.

From the linked Hamner obit:

His father, Earl Sr., worked as a machinist at the DuPont factory in Waynesboro, Va., and lived in a boarding house before heading back to the family in Schuyler on weekends. He walked six miles home at the end of each week, and one such trek, on a snowy Christmas Eve in 1933, became the inspiration for Hamner’s beautiful 1970 novella, The Homecoming.

Back in the early 1960s -- before the town of Schuyler, VA gained a minor measure of fame as the boyhood home of Hamner/fictional setting for 'The Waltons' -- one set of grandparents retired to a big ol' farmhouse just outside of that town. That six mile walk home (from the closest train station) described above, the one Earl Sr. made at the end of each workweek and which Earl Jr. turned into a story, went through what would later be the land the g-parents owned and the place my sibs and I used to run around on for a week or two each summer.

Earl was like Betty Smith before him. Mid-century figure who never stopped writing, but nothing reached anybody like their breakthrough autobiographical novels did. Some people may or may not be particularly good writers, but they have no compelling story in them like their own. It can be true of filmmakers too.

It takes a Harper Lee to realize it about themselves and so walk away even as armies of fans and publishers and lawyers bang on their doors asking for more.

Approximate location where the body was found this morning: This is about 74 miles from the Market Street Bridge in Williamsport.

Dwayne "the Pearl" Washington. 52 years old. Brain cancer.

Not unexpected given the turn of events the past year, but still sad. I think it is tough for those who have never lived in the Syracuse area to understand how much he meant to us. As die-hard as fans are here in the city, it does not approach what Syracuse basketball means to Central New York. When Syracuse wins, the whole area has a spring in their step. When they are eliminated from the tournament, the whole area is down the next day.

Pearl really made that happen. Without him, there is no Freakin' Rutgers thread.

Elton Spitzer, the man who decided Garden City's WLIR should dare to be different, complications from Parkinson's disease, 84.

“Elton loved that little 3,000-watt station on Long Island,” said Denis McNamara, the station’s program director at the time. “And he loved the impact that it had.”

In 1982, WLIR’s album rock format had grown stale and faced increasing competition from stations throughout the area. McNamara gave Spitzer two options — a soft-rock, adult contemporary playlist, or one built on the British New Wave movement and the more melodic end of the American punk movement.

Spitzer went with the New Wave, telling McNamara, “This sounds like more fun.”

And it was.

Re: Guess Who Died in 2016

I actually liked WLIR in the time prior to them switching to the 'New Wave' format - it was a true "progressive" station with a wide mix that included stuff from the southern-rock that was popular a time (and particularly so on Long Island: Marshall Tucker, etc.) right alongside the Billy Joel/Blondie/Bruce Springsteen/Ramones stuff mentioned in the linked article that served as the station's mainstay.
But surviving on a wide format wasn't where things were trending at that time (stations were no longer broadcasting they were narrowcasting) so at least the niche they did carve out for themselves was one that set them apart remainder of the pack [WNEW, WBAB, K-Rock, Q-whatever] and allowing the DJs to tailor their set-lists to their own tastes (at least within the confines of the station's stated mission) was, even way back in their early days, a refreshing throwback.

Re: Guess Who Died in 2016

To the extent that I was into that early 80's new wave sound, it was LIR that probably first exposed me to that music. The station didn't always come in cleanly in the NYC area, but whenever my car travels took me closer to the LIR base, I'd often remember to switch the radio dial to 92.7.

About 30 years ago, I heard this remix version of U2's "Wire" on LIR:

[youtube:3aivyawx]0w9uSZgsx3E[/youtube:3aivyawx]

and have been trying to "get" that song ever since, without any luck. I never heard it again or ever saw it for sale, until a few years ago, when it was released on some deluxe version of the Unforgettable Fire album, complete with alt versions of many of the songs. But this now being the digital and internet era, I saved the cash on that album and simply downloaded the "Wire" remix from youtube and stripped out the video.

'Ceptin the Shriek of the Weak was a trademark of WLIR's successor in the 92.7 frequency slot, WDRE. WLIR brought us the Screamer of the Weak.

First-ever Screamer, September 4 1980 was Suzi Quatro, who never quite caught on in the US. She started off piggybacking on the glam rock movement, tried to find comfortable spot in pop punk. This new format straddling the end of punk and the birth of post-punk, stylistically borrowing liberally from 1950s rock'n'roll hoodlumism, should have been a natural for her. But despite being the debut Screamer she didn't find a home there, even as Joan Jett (who borrowed liberally from her presentation) scored bit.

Very sad about the death of master songwriter Guy Clark. About 20 years ago, long after 2 in the morning, in a smokey bar on the outskirts of a little northern Italian town called Sesto Callende, I was sitting at table getting seriously drunk with 3 of the great songwriters: Guy Clark, Terry Allen and Butch Hancock. Eventually we decided to flip coins, each of us betting $100 on heads or tails. In our wickedly drunken state this seemed like an excellent idea. Eventually I sobered up enough to realize I was 300 bucks down to Guy. I looked across the table at him. His eyes were cold and deadly serious like a coyote's eyes when it sees an unattended poodle dog innocently passing by. I looked at Terry and Butch and their eyes were the same hungry coyote slits. The looks on their faces sobered me up enough that I managed to evenually win back the 300 bucks before I excused myself from the table. I grabbed my guitar and walked the 2 miles back to my hotel room thinking about how I was not in Guy's league as a coin flipping gambler. It's the same for songwriting. Not many of us are in Guy Clark's league. Like Dylan or Leonard Cohen, Guy was one of the best. I will miss our sarcastic conversations and his constant inspiration. Thank you for your songs, your humor and for letting me not lose the coin game, Mr Clark.

And everyone existed almost 99% of the time in flounder-faced profile, talking to each other with wide open mouths that nearly unhinged their jaws. One of the few who would get the dignity of an occasional straight-on shot is Momma herself, occasionally turning to the reader in the last frame of the strip, with eyes begging for sympathy, silently saying, "You SEE the shit I have to put up with here?"

I met Gordie and his wife at a company sponsored breakfast about 30 years ago. (He was the spokesperson for the company I worked for at the time). I also saw him play and he was a tough customer. Many in this area remember the famous fight he had with Ranger goon "Leapin" Looie Fontanato. I asked him about it. His comment? "He tried to slice off my ear, so I broke his nose".

But hs wife was this sweet, tiny woman. And Gordie seemed to do everything she asked him to do. It was kinda' cute.

Spent the Ford and most of the Carter administrations in the WHA, but yeah.

He scored 121 goals in the WHA, playing six seasons from 45 to 51.

Around the same time, while WHA might have seemed like a great place for an old fossil to hang on for a few more paychecks, Wayne Gretzky was tearing up the ice in the same league as an 18-year-old.

And took number 99 in honor of Howe's #9. In doing so he started a trend in high numbers in the NHL (which came for a variety of reasons): Lemieux, Lindros, Bourque, Esposito, Crosby, Jagr, etc.

A fond farewell to early Wings guitarist Henry McCullough. McCullough got an early start playing Paul McCartney material by backing the world's greatest McCartney cover artist, Joe Cocker, including at Woodstock. His most well-known contribution to the Wings canon is his solo on "My Love" which, for my money, is about as great a distorted electric guitar solo on slow ballad you'll ever hear, rivaled only by Thomas McClary's solo on the Commodores' "Easy," and George Harrison's slide solo on "Something."

He's also the guy at the end of Pink Floyd's "Money" who can be heard to say "I don't know, I was pretty drunk at the time." Oddly (and confusingly) enough, he was replaced in Wings by a guy named Jimmy McCulloch, pronounced more or less the same, but spelled differently and no relation.

Jimmy McCulloch, featured in the 1980 concert movie "Rockshow" (which is a great look in on mid-1970's Wings live), was also a talent on guitar, but died in 1979 due to complications from morphine/alcohol poisoning.

Kool thing about being young in New York: just walking walking the streets and finding some legend is playing for whatever you have in your pocket. Turned a corner one night and saw legendary P-Funk keyboardist Bernie Worrell was performing for some ridiculous single digit admission price, and Bill Laswell (who was the very busy producer of my favorite hard rock albums at the time — Iggy Pop's Instinct, the Ramones' Brain Drain — as well as his long legacy in funk) was joining him on bass. I guess a venue like that makes it back at the bar, but my ass and I never left the dance floor.

With Prince gone, Bernie may have just spent his last few months as the funkiest man alive. He's also well known for being part of the peripheral band for Talking Heads, including his part in the movie Stop Making Sense, and was in The World's Most Dangerous Band for the first year or two of The Late Show Starring David Letterman.

Bernie Worrell, Rock 'n' Roll Hall of Famer, dead at 72.

He was a haggard-looking dude, but it didn't stop him from putting on a sequined shower cap and fronting his own funk-rock hybrid unit.

Michigan state Rep. Julie Plawecki died today at 54.

If you think that last name is familiar, you are correct. At the Governor's holiday party last year, I saw a guy standing by himself so I started talking. Somehow it came up that I was a New Yorker -- the slight accent is still there -- and he said he was a Mets fan, which was nice to hear. Then he told me he was related to Kevin.

The guy was the Representative's husband, and a judge. He became a Mets fan when he was a kid, getting caught up in the excitement of 1969 and following them since.

I ran into the Representative later and mentioned that we had a good talk about baseball. "I'm sure he talked your ear off," she said. "It's his favorite subject."

She was very nice, and it's sad to see this.

Garry Marshall in his later years created this awful sub-genre of multi-narrative films built around date-night holidays, basically intending to squat these days for years to come as days when you stay at home and watch his film if you can't get a date yourself. He took his cash cow of Happy Days and turned it into un-self-conscious farce and a launching pad for his other ventures.

Preston Hubbard, blues bassist extraordinaire, has died at 63. Hubbard played for Roomful of Blues out of Rhode Island in the seventies back when they were the hottest R&B combo going, and then moved on to Austin and the Fabulous Thunderbirds in the eighties, helping launch them to stardom. He played with a bunch of blues/Americana/alt-country acts along the way (Bonnie Raitt, Big Joe Turner, Snooky Pryor, Duke Robillard, Lou Ann Barton, Nick Curran and even played for Ministry on their Filth Pig album.

He became a seriously messed up drug abuser and fell by the wayside in the nineties, but managed to cycle back into circulation even after being presumed dead and doing some time in prison. He was dead and alone in his place for a week to 10 days before being discovered, which I only know because I'm friends with a woman who used to date him. That's hit her hard and it's hitting me hard too, as I just paid a visit to my home town and found out that my oldest friend is junked up.

I was at that Town Hall Concert. During the song "Hey Li Lee Li Lee Lo" the group asked for verses from the audience.
One guy sang:
"The Limelighters sure are nifty"
(They responded Hey Li Lee Li Lee Lo)
The guy continued:
"C'mon ferllas. Twelve fifty?"*

The place went wild.

Thanks for the memory.

In the God awful Holiday Special, Anthony Daniels was creditd as C-3PO, but R2 was credited as "himself" so perhaps it was an "effort" back then. Either that or Kenny wasn't in the getup when it was filmed and it was an mechanical version.

When I was a high-schooler, my delinquent friends and I amused ourselves by going to the men's department in Sears at the Walt Whitman Mall and stealing all the "umbrella" lapel stick pins off the suits in the "Arnold Palmer" collection on display there. We got dozens.

This later devolved further into a campaign among the more depraved our crowd, which we began calling "the Umbrella Club" by defacing public property (mostly men's rooms walls) by drawing umbrellas on things in a thick black magic marker.

Progressive activist and leader Tom Hayden, 76.

During the racial unrest and antiwar protests of the ’60s and early ’70s, Mr. Hayden was one of the nation’s most visible radicals. He was a founder of Students for a Democratic Society, a defendant in the Chicago Seven trial after riots at the 1968 Democratic National Convention, and a peace activist who married Jane Fonda, went to Hanoi and escorted American prisoners of war home from Vietnam.

As a civil rights worker, he was beaten in Mississippi and jailed in Georgia. In his cell he began writing what became the Port Huron Statement, the political manifesto of S.D.S. and the New Left that envisioned an alliance of college students in a peaceful crusade to overcome what it called repressive government, corporate greed and racism. Its aim was to create a multiracial, egalitarian society.

Like his allies the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and Senator Robert F. Kennedy, who were assassinated in 1968, Mr. Hayden opposed violent protests but backed militant demonstrations, like the occupation of Columbia University campus buildings by students and the burning of draft cards. He also helped plan protests that, as it happened, turned into clashes with the Chicago police outside the Democratic convention.

Re: Guess Who Died in 2016

So while you're trying to think of the least likely R&R star to be associated with Bobby Vee, read on (from the Wash Post obit):

In the summer of 1959, as Mr. Vee’s career was beginning to take off, he hired a pianist from Minnesota who called himself Elston Gunnn. The pianist worked with Mr. Vee for little more than a month.
Unfortunately, most of the pianos at their gigs were not in tune, and neither Gunnn nor the band could spring for a more tuneful and portable electric model. However, Gunnn got some mileage out of the few gigs by telling his friends that he was Bobby Vee.
Later, in 1961, Gunnn — real name Robert Zimmerman — moved to Greenwich Village and took the stage name Bob Dylan.

It was also reportedly Dylan who suggested to Robert Velline to alter his name to the more pop-friendly Bobby Vee

A giant.

I saw his tour a few years ago at Radio City. Elvis Costello and David Byrne were fellow audience members. It was one of the most memorable concerts I've ever attended.

His songwriting is among the very best. My only carp against him was the haphazard production he often employed on his mid-career albums, filled with cheap and cheesy electronic keyboards. That, however, is overwhelmed by the majesty and grace of so many of his songs.

Also a good novelist. All I have to go on is "Beautiful Losers" but I remember it fondly.

I was thinking got it more from a perspective of how many different Presidents were in office while he was in power, which gets us back to eleven -- Eisenhower, Kennedy, Johnson, Nixon, Ford, Carter, Reagan, Bush, Clinton, Bush, Obama -- the first ten of which he managed to outlast in power if not in life.

On a side note, looking at BatMag's list, when Taft died in 1930, Calvin Coolidge, then out of office only one year, was the nation's only living ex-president, and when he died three years later, just following Franklin Roosevelt's election but before his inauguration, it created a two-month period in which there were no living ex-presidents. Prior to that you have to go back to when Grover Cleveland died during Teddy Roosevelt's final year in office to find a time (approx 9 months worth) when no ex-presidents were alive. Such situations were probably was more common prior to that but I don't have the patience to look right now.
Haven't had that situation recently as, since Coolidge, only FDR (63), JFK (46) and LBJ (64) have had shorter than average lifespans. All other exes have reached at least 75 with a whole host of them -- Hoover, Ford, Reagan, Carter, older Bush -- passing the 90 mark. Two months from now (Yikes!!) there could be five living exes.

Ford was the longest living president at 93 years + 5 and change months although GHW Bush (92y 6m) and Jimmy Carter (four months younger) are closing in. Carter already holds the record for having spent the longest time as an ex-president (passing Hoover a few years back) and also seems to be in better health these days as compared to GHWB for anyone who cares to place a bet on either one passing Ford.

oe: D'oh I screwed up ... when LBJ died in Jan of '73 (just a few weeks after Harry Truman) there were no exes alive until Nixon's resignation 19 months later!!

Actually, it is odd that an LA market paper, that had a local team at the time, would have a banner headline for a San Diego transaction like that.

I am literally pushing 40 early next year =;)

I'll give you that with the exception of Rex Ryan, the Bills haven't made a big "transcending the market" acquisition to which a one-to-one comparison with Johnny U can be made though. Not too mention that yeah, since the Bills haven't been to the postseason since before the millennium, landing one of the all-time great all-time greats (no matter where in their career they'd be in) probably would deserve front page coverage down here in Giant-Jet dominated media territory!

That's a great 'Wire' scene.

The stunning thing about the Big Mac story is that is came via a franchisee when most probably just assumed -- I certainly did -- it to be a top-down invention. But not only did this start with a single store but corporate fought him on it for a while before eventually allowing him to sell it locally and then finally adopting it as a standard menu option complete with the advertising slogan [Two all-beef patties, special sauce ...] which made the it the company's signature item.

Edgy MD
Dec 02 2016 02:40 PM
Re: Guess Who Died in 2016

Him introducing the Big Mac was the equivalent of walking into Ford in the early 1920s, and convincing them that in addition to millions of Model T's, they needed to introduce an Explorer.

The lack of diversity in the menu was the whole point with McDonald's. Production was streamlined and affordable. What corporate didn't realize that this model was a good angle to get cash poor markets hooked, but once hooked, diversification allowed their customers to grow more sophisticated within the brand loyalty they'd already established. It was evil and brilliant. And it was a move that Henry Ford himself failed to make over and over again and it near destroyed the company, and would have had he lived any longer.

Certainly knew who she was, but living to 99 helped make her the epitome of 'famous for being famous' for such a long time now that I had to go back and look up exactly what it was she was/did.
She was a movie and TV actress (to an extent), a European born socialite (sort of), and kind of pulled the opposite of your typical NFL player by having nine spouses but just one child. She out-lived the one child, a daughter with hubby #2, Conrad Hilton (which makes her sort-of related to all kinds of other 'famous for famous' types) and probably out-lived most of the other husbands although did manage to widow the last one anyway, the one 26 years her junior who claimed title of a Prince despite being the son of a German policeman.

And he's disgusted by bosses who care less about fighting crime than about kowtowing to a washed-up, rich, old prima donna like her.

And that came out in 1974!

Re: Guess Who Died in 2016

I had just started to forgive him and appreciate him for the massive talent he was. If anybody had the voice, the showmanship, and the shamelessness to step into Freddy Mercury's spot and tour with Queen, he would have been the guy, though a big chunk of US rawk audiences never would have accepted him.

I remember reading one of those de rigueur articles about the maturing superstar having allegedly put his wild years behind him — it must have been about 10 years ago, and he described his newer, cleaner life was "limiting" himself to 10 joints a day, and I thought "My God, the guy is done. He's never going to do any new music again."

He did manage one more album, one of mostly live recordings from a tour in 2012-2013, and playing a 75-date tour ain't nothing, but man, that guy did a massive amount of drugs, and they ate up a lot of years of what could have been a helluva productive career.

I dug Faith as a middle-schooler and Listen Without Prejudice is still a guilty pleasure of mine.

While the lyrics on Prejudice will never be mistaken for Dylan, I do think they show a tremendous amount of honesty and growth from someone who was chorusing "wake me up before you go-go, don't leave me hanging on like a yo-yo" just 6 years earlier.

Re: Guess Who Died in 2016

I remember seeing him lament one time about whether fans "would ever forgive him for WHAM", something which probably didn't make his WHAM partner feel all that good but I think it was more a case of acknowledging that either one of them would have a tough time living down the teeny-bopper image of those early records. In fact it would be tough to list many artists who have. Timberlake I suppose although he, like 'Marky Mark' put the early acts behind them more with acting than singing. Rickey Nelson probably had more musical talent than most in his spot yet fought for years with only limited success to get beyond his childhood image and at least occasionally got criticized for even trying. Few if any of the pop princesses over the years (Tiffany, Debbie Gibson, etc.) had any real success beyond their base of tween fans and there seems to be a current crop struggling with that now while deciding that the best path is to drug and/or tart their way out of it.

Careless Whisper sold me on Wham! No problem there.

With the birthday thing and the fact that he backed up Elton on some of his most beautiful work made me a fan of George Michael. Could be I didn't even realize how much so until now.

You don't know what you got til it's gone.

Glad he died peacefully.

Going ten minutes without breathing was never going to have a happy outcome, unfortunately.

Boy, at this point celebrities must be praying they make it to 2017.

That's what I thought when I heard she'd been out for 10 minutes.

And when it was the other way around it wasn't too bad either. His recording of a live performance of "Don't Let The Sun Go Down on Me" with Elton John backing him up on vocals and piano is one of my favorites.

The first Broadway show that I ever saw was Irene, starring Debbie Reynolds. It was mesmerizing seeing such a great actress in action.

RIP Miss Reynolds - may you and your daughter be at peace together always.

Some Irene trivia: Check your Playbill if that's your Playbill and not just some photo from the internet. Carrie Fisher was part of the Irene cast, too.

Also, Irene was the inaugural production for the Minskoff Theater.

It is indeed my Playbill.

Carrie Fisher wasn't at the performance I attended (perhaps because it was a Wednesday matinee?), but Ruth Warrick and the very recently departed George S. Irving were.

Debbie Reynolds passing is so, so sad. If you ever saw Carrie Fisher's one-woman show Wishful Drinking, you got a sense of just how close they were. They lived next door to each other in Beverly Hills, for one thing.

She had a great line about how Debbie Reynolds would start each call with "Carrie, this is your mother, Debbie."

She would ask "I wonder how many mothers she thought I had that she felt the need to clarify."

In point of fact, I looked up Irene on IBDB.com. Carrie Fisher is listed in my Playbill! I didn't realize that the Debutantes and the Ninth Avenue Fellas were listed on a different page from the principal cast.

Longtime WFUV host Rich Conaty, a big band maven for all eras, leaves the air at 62. Also worked at the late WNEW-AM and its successor WQEW.

Geez, don't sleep on 2016, not even at its end.

And yet Rene Auberjonois (movie Mulcahy) lives on at age 76.

Updating the M*A*S*H scorecard:

* Benjamin Franklin 'Hawkeye' Pierce
Donald Sutherland (movie Hawkeye) alive at age 81
Alan Alda (TV Hawkeye) alive at 80

* Trapper John McIntyre
Elliot Gould (M) 78
Wayne Rogers (TV) died on New Year's Eve 2015 - one year to the day before William Christopher

* Henry Blake
Roger Bowen (M) - died Feb 16, 1996
McLean Stevenson (TV) - died Feb 15, 1996

* Margaret 'Hot Lips' Houlihan
Sally Kellerman (M) 79
Loretta Swit (TV) 79

* Frank Burns (eats worms)
Robert Duvall (M) turns 86 later this week
Larry Linville (TV) died 2000

* Walter Eugene 'Radar' O'Reilly
Gary Burghoff (M + TV) and remarkably both are still living at age 63

Conaty was a true anomaly, a middle of the baby boom generation kid who decided, essentially right from the beginning, that the music in his wheelhouse was not that of his teenage years but of the era which preceded his birth by up to a full generation. So despite rarely straying into music recorded after WWII, Conaty was actually younger than his longtime Rock & Roll colleagues at WFUV such as the late Pete Fornatale & the now retired Vin Scelca, and still no older than many of the current ones who took over for them.
My father was a regular listener, both at FUV and at earlier stops, an even an occasional caller into the show (say wasn't that Perry Como tune you just played done by Crosby years earlier ...? ) to the point of becoming a friend of sorts with Conaty who turned out to be a comic book fan and invited him on the show once or twice. Good radio still fosters a kind of intimacy not found in other mediums and, given that particular era of music, it's unlikely those remaining Conaty listeners will find that kind of connection again.

Lots of last minute thoughts in the Dead thread for me here - but I see where HBO is rerunning the filmed version of Carrie Fisher's one woman show WISHFUL DRINKING tonight at 9:00 (and again a midnight)
Originally done back in 2010, there's some truly funny shit amongst her angst and troubles especially if you're into comedy as a means of family and mental and professional therapy.
