I've been going through some old images this morning, so I thought I would begin 2016 with Fireworks over Shea 10 years ago:

Re: Cheese 2016

Thanks Kase - I still miss the old girl..

Another that I dug up from the archives - This is one of my favorite vacation images that I have ever shot.

We were walking out of Seaworld at closing time, and we saw Tilly aimlessly swimming around and around in the main tank. My kids just rain over to take one last look at him, and it was a picture that basically took itself.

The amazing thing about this is image is that as soon as I snapped the shutter, a horde of people came and swarmed around the windows - it was dumb luck that I was able to get Tilly alone with YoungerDGW and YoungestDGW

Re: Cheese 2016

Since we're starting off the year with retro pictures, four years ago today I took what will likely be the best picture I'll ever take. It was one of those situations where I had the right equipment, the sky was perfect and there was nobody and nothing stopping me from getting right under the Unisphere.

Part of the reason I love this so much is that I lived in Flushing when I was a baby and one of my first memories is a dream that my mother and I were inside the Unisphere. As I was taking the photos I couldn't help thinking that this is what it would have looked like if my dream had been real.

Re: Cheese 2016

I can't wait until I shoot my next game.

Finding images that I previously decided to skip over in favor of others is half the fun of going through my archives. The other half is applying updated processing techniques to see if it makes a difference in the finished product.

A few years ago, I went out to San Francisco to attend AdobeMax with a few of my co-workers.

On the last night there, they went out to dinner at the local Ruth's Chris steakhouse. I went to bed early, because I wanted to get up before dawn, and head out to see the Golden Gate Bridge, which I had never seen...

It was one of the most peaceful mornings I ever had. Wandering down the path in Golden Gate park, lit only by the flashlight app of my ipod, I made my way down to the edge of the water. It was such a peaceful experience...

I know that I've told this story here previously, and this is a different image from that morning.

It was such a relief to finally have a game to shoot this weekend. Saturday night, St. Joseph High and Trumbull High faced each other in a girls/boys doubleheader at Fairfield University with the proceeds going to breast cancer research.

Thanks JCL - I've been shooting for Hersam Acorn, which is the parent company of a group of weekly papers in the area. These shots were for their paper in Trumbull. Tonight, I'm shooting a game for their Milford paper, tomorrow is another game for their Stratford paper.

I think you should photograph them in that chair even when they're adults. If they can't fit it anymore, make 'em squeeze in anyways. If they can't squeeze in, have 'em pose with it, wear it on their heads, play tug of war with it, stand on it, jump on it like it was a trampouline. Use your imagination.

Are you using the pop up flash on the camera, or do you have an external flash? The first pair suggests that you didn't leave enough time between exposures for the flash to recycle.

yeah, pop up flash. they're not as close together as all that. (a good 2 seconds?) and it's never been a problem before. Plus, sometimes the flash goes off and it's still dark. or alternatively, washed out.

Re: Cheese 2016

There are a lot of things it could be.

Do you have your flash set to TTL?
In the case of the image being blown out, are you too close?
Make sure your flash icon in the viewfinder is solidly lit, and not blinking - if it's blinking, that means it's not ready yet.

Also, try upping your ISO to 400 or 800 when using the popup flash. They aren't that powerful.

fwiw, this happens on Auto too.

I'm not at home so I dunno. I know I set the metering to both spot and matrix and same issues.

I wasn't too close. say this one, I'm a good 6 feet away or so. Focal length 18mm. I clicked this one and it was washed out, and the very next picture was too dark. f-stop f/3.5 and exposure time 1/25 and it wasn't even a dark room.

nah, I had it on shutter priority and I had lowered it to 1/25 as a test to see if it'd let more light in than 1/60 (it didn't appear to)

This is all roughly exactly the same way I used the camera for the previous 3 months too, without issue. That the flash could go off and not illuminate the photo seemed like a big tip-off to me that something's up.

This explains it better than I could: http://www.exposureguide.com/slow-sync-flash.htm

Without actually getting my hands on your camera, I'm just making guesses.

Try setting your camera in full program mode with matrix metering, and see if you have the same problems. If you do, then there's something defective with the flash itself

Re: Cheese 2016

why would you say flash itself over the sensor? You're thinking that the flash is happening off-kilter with the shutter opening? I'll test some more tonight (plan to bring it in to where I bought it next week for warranty) or this weekend, but I'm pretty sure the ambient light in the room has been light enough that the pictures, flash or not, shouldn't be as dark as they are at times.

I don't know if I missed with the sync settings but now that I looked up which button it is, i'm pretty confident it's on normal.

If it was the sensor, it would manifest itself in shots without the flash as well.

fair point. so yeah, it's the flash then I guess.

It seems to be going off prior to the shutter going off, regardless of the setting. I switched from normal to rear. The first time it seemed to flash longer and was a fine shot, and then the second time it flashed and then shutter noise. dark photo. The flash isn't always going off (And the lightning bolt isn't flashing at the time, solid bolt)

on Auto mode I can't seem to get the flash to go off at all and it's auto adjusting ISO to like 3200 in a dark room and the photo is dark.

it i set it to P (programmed auto) it seems to work okay on slow flash or slow rear flash but regular flash, same issues. sometimes too early, sometimes not at all. And then when I switch back to slow flash it's iffy again and not going off.

on Manual, same issues. I couldn't seem to get the flash at all, dark photos.

After shooting 7 games in 2 1/2 days in 2 arenas, I'm finally emerging from my cave.

Friday night, I headed down to Ingalls Rink at Yale to shoot the CIAC Division II State Hockey Finals. Fairfield Co-op goalie Mike Grace was unconscious, saving 35 on 36 shots on goal in the first 21/2 periods until North Branford scored 2 quick goals to tie the game, and send it into OT. The Mustangs defeated North Branford, 4-3 in overtime to claim the Division II state title.

I was back at Ingalls early Saturday morning for the Division III finals, with the Stamford - Westhill co-op team facing the SWS co-op team. Samuel New of SWS scored 2 goals against Westhill-Stamford in the CIAC Division III Ice Hockey State Championshop Final. Westhill-Stamford outlasted SWS, 5-4 to win the State title.

From there, I rushed out to Mohegan Sun for a pair of CIAC Class M Basketball Finals - Notre Dame of Fairfield Girls taking on Cromwell High, and the Notre Dame of Fairfield boys taking on Sacred Heart Academy.

In the first game, Cromwell High defeated Notre Dame of Fairfield, 43-20, in a game that wasn't even that close:

BTW, it's for these kinds of shots that I love my 18-300 lens, despite its limitations. My focus that day was getting shots of the players on the field, but I noticed the little cutie sitting nearby and was able to get those photos. I would have totally lost the moment if I had to futz around with changing lenses.

I think I goofed when I got the set with the 18-55 and the 55-200 instead of one that went up to 300. we'll see how I feel once I try it out at Citi, where I figure I'll zoom more as a rule, though I'd like to zoom up to birds 40-50 feet up my trees in the backyard too.

I probably should just pick up a nice one right?

Re: Cheese 2016

Lenses are like potato chips - you'll always want more.

Shoot with your kit lenses until you have a better sense of what you want to accomplish, and then buy a quality lens that will help you do that.

I used to have an 18-200 (I actually still have it. Sometimes I use it while traveling, if I want to go with one lens and I don't want to take along my primo gear). I explained to G-Fafif one day that it does everything pretty well, although it's not the best at what it does. G-Fafif said, "Like Daniel Murphy," so since then it's been called my Daniel Murphy Lens.

When I bought the 18-300 it was named the Super Joe, since it does what the Daniel Murphy does but with more versatility.

What's the strongest or most powerful or most zoomiest zoom lens you've been permitted to bring to Citi Field? Have you ever been denied permission to bring a certain type lens to Citi Field?

Thanks in advance.

I've not been hassled with my 18-300, but I usually travel with one camera/one lens, the camera in a cute backpack and a strong mom vibe. I've had male friends hassled about equipment at the Citi, but they have a more professional looking setup than I do when I attend games.

One of my big peeves is the lack of guidance that the Mets give about their camera policy. The Mets simply say that small digital cameras are ok and commercial grade cameras are not, ignoring the huge void in between and leaving it up to the security personnel. As opposed to the Nationals, who allow lenses that are up to 8" long and the Phillies who allow cameras so long as the bags fit through the bag template, the Mets make it difficult for fans to know what they are permitted to bring in.

You're welcome.

I much prefer venues that provide clear guidance about equipment. If I know in advance that I can't bring a camera with a detachable lens, I have a point-and-shoot for that. If I know in advance that only small point-and-shoots are allowed, I have a good small one too. But I really hate the anxiety of not knowing for sure whether I'm going to be hassled for my equipment when I get to the front of the security line.

I can work with a small point-and-shoot. I took this with a small point-and-shoot at Radio City (from the back quarter of the orchestra). Just tell me what I can bring and I'll work with it.

Re: Cheese 2016

Also, it can help to print out the camera policy for overzealous security personnel. Live Nation concerts are notorious for giving fans hassles. The PNC Bank Arts Center is specific that you can't bring in a camera with a removable lens, but I've been hassled there for having a large point-and-shoot. So far I haven't been denied admission there with my camera, but I've had to argue about it a few times.
