CPF Song of the Day 2016 presented by Pat St. John

Who (apart from JCL) has heard of this song?

I never knew the artist was Aussie, although the lyrics kinda suggest that: "How I miss December" yet bitching about the cold.

Been hooked on the Band lately. The level of musicianship of these guys is really off the charts. This one is stuck in my head today.

Watch all 4(just click play pt.2, pt.3, etc after the vid ends).
It gets a tad old by the end. I recommend a 30 minute break between pt.s 2 & 3.

Yeah, it's even Rundgren-esque how it starts, like he's coming in on the third line, somehow.

TPoH is in danger of becoming my new favorite forgotten band.

TPoH is a Canadian power pop outfit, mostly known stateside for their 1986 comic cowpunkish minor hit "I'm an Adult Now." (It was a smash in Canada!)

Lots of lineup and label changes (but always fronted by Moe Berg, and not the one who was a secret-agent catcher) kept them on the fringes, but they retain an appreciative following in power pop circles. They're fun!

Been trying to get more current and stumbled upon these guys. This is the leadoff track from their most recent album, released last year. Very melodic.

They're very REM-like. I think Peter Buck in fact plays on that rekkid.

Peter Buck played on their previous album The King is Dead, but not this one. I like The Decemberists, very creative lyrics and interesting melodies. My wife recently listed them as her favorite band. So that's two thumbs up for your recent find.

The Decembrists are a little quirky, but they have lyrics that make you think. They are one of the bands I began listening to after first learning of them from other members of the CPF.

Hot new song from Santana, with Neil Schon, Greg Rolle, Michael Carabello, and Michael Shrieve returning from their classic Nixon-era lineup. Rolle amazingly sounds pretty close to the same.

And get this. They have the moxie to call new album (due in April) Santana IV... because it's a followup to Santana III... released in 1971.

I hear about a half-dozen Klassik Rawk Klassiks in that song beginning with Oye Coma Va 4 seconds in. But it is pretty retro-cool.

BUT... the greatest Todd Rundgren song that isn't a Todd Rundgren song:

Broke up before the release of their followup single. But the two principles continued to write together and were nominated for an Academy Award for the song "Lost Stars" from the film Begin Again.

I've posted Brett Dennen before. Strange, tall, androgynous, kale-eating Northern California folkie who makes me think of Paul Simon and Van Morrison. New toon, subtly hooky.

And what better for a rockin' grandpa to write and play:

The lyrics are ridiculous on that whole Willie Nile album, it's as though he purposefully set out to make the most un-ironic, in-your-face rock album ever, and didn't care how simply it all comes off. It's so unpretentious it's almost pretentious.

Let's all come together
Let's make this bad news better
Let's all come together right now
Let's do it now or never
Let's make it last forever
Let's all come together right now.
Whoa-oh
Whoa-oh
Hey, hey
Oh yeah

Good tribute to Levon Helm on that album too:
