Disappointed that the Steelers lost, but I like Payton Manning and I don't like the Patriots, so that'll be an easy game to choose sides.

Not sure if anyone else is playing, but I've heard that those two are so it could be just a game of marbles or something.

Re: NFL PLayoffs

The Microsoft computers (yes, the announcers said the name proudly) being used on the sideline by the Patriots crapped out in the first half. The ones being used by Denver (the home team) were working ok. And Brady seemed confused by the Bronco coverages, leading to two first half interceptions.

That kind of stuff usually happens to the Patriots' opponents.
Nobody is feeling sorry for them.
They're losing in the second half as I post this, and Brady isn't throwing well. He's underthrowing his receivers, as though his arm is injured.

The difference is that baseball fans are spared the onslaught from hours-long pre-game and half-time shows which trot out 5 ex-players, 4 out of work coaches, 3 celebrities, 2 sideline reporters plus a former ref and some homeless guy they just dragged in off the street to repeat the same crap over and over again while passing it off as insight.
Just once I'd like to hear someone say that the key to the upcoming game is to outscore the other team.

I know, I watch a lot of my football with headphones on listening
to music instead the announcers and mute most of the of pre-game/

I guess they thought 'Super Bowl L' looked goofy or something.

In other news: apparently there was another "domestic incident" involving Johnny Manziel overnight; some NY Giant is being accused of attempted rape; and remember when they told us concussions were down? ... well now they're up again, even according to the league's own reporting.
So that's probably enough for one weekend, unless one wants to count the O.J. mini-series starting Tuesday.

As I recall Schultz got whacked and blacklisted for the incident even though he later said he was encouraged to take care of the pesky Stossel by Vince himself. That's a very WWF thing to do.

Well, this is pretty funny....

San Franciscans Have Declared War On Super Bowl Sculptures

The NFL sure is mighty excited to be holding the Super Bowl in the Bay Area. San Francisco residents appear less than excited to have them.

As part of the festivities, 10 one-ton sculptures hyping Super Bowl 50 have been set up around town, and, were almost immediately set upon as symbols of the NFL as occupying force.

Re: NFL PLayoffs

I like how the story is perpetuated about the SB being 'in San Francisco' even though the game is in fact close to 50 miles out of town (or, if you prefer, 'L' miles away).

Which all just serves as a reminder that neither NY team actually plays in NYC, and the Patriots are nowhere near Boston, and the Redskins don't actually play in D.C., nor are the Cowboys in Dallas, etc. - although at least the Lions did move back to Detroit after a few decades out in the exurbs.

i imagine it's not really about that. Nor is it even about the show. It's the NFL being able to say "look at all the stars we have!" and the stars getting the opportunity to promote themselves via the Super Bowl. Hell, the hallftime show went RIGHT into a Beyonce ad followed shortly by a Missy Elliot promotion/Amazon thing.

In fact, I'm not even sure any of this content matters. It's just one big name-droppinggasm. Even the non-'sponsored' commercials are getting coverage in the weeks leading up to and after the Super Bowl. It's all just a contest to see who can shout into the void the loudest and make themselves known.

And look at the #Brands falling all over themselves to tweet/make content while the game is going on. Some of it's amusing, sure, but it's all just a money grab at the piece of the pie that is group-watch television. One of the few events we really have like that.

I did enjoy MLB tweeting about the field goal that hit the upright "Home Run"! though.

We went to bed after the first half because I remarked to my husband that they were playing like it was an exhibition game, we had zero interest in halftime (I can't even remember who the acts were) and the commercials were stupid. There was one that made me laugh but I forget what it was.

The flip of that though is, how long was Stabler out of the public spotlight?

And what were the reasons for keeping him out prior to his public seclusion? Certainly old guard "he doesn't have the stats" voters still had a strong enough sway over the years.

Frayed Knot

Re: NFL PLayoffs

I didn't realize he wasn't in either until the stories of his death circulated last week. I also don't claim to have enough football knowledge to argue about it one way of the other, but I was struck by the timing of his induction coming right on the heels of his passing.

One on hand the fact that he was kept out despite all the years of eligibility indicates that at least some portion of the voting bloc considered him to be, at best, borderline for whatever reason.
But the suspicious side of me also wondered if he may have been shunted aside in more recent years due to fears about how he would look and sound at his own induction. Family statements referred to the standard 'he had good days and bad' in describing his later years and when you combine that with the very [u:3fawq1uf]Un[/u:3fawq1uf]-transparent nature of their HoF process, one could see league insiders being concerned that parading him in front of cameras and the world might serve as a (barely) walking advertisement for the sport causing body & brain damage right as Goodell is trying to sell the country on the idea that football is risky the same way sitting on your coach is.

Re: NFL PLayoffs

Only tangentially related to football but symptomatic of the craziness.

At the beginning, where the NFL has to show that they are so SuperAwesomePatriotic beyond all belief and don't criticize them because this game is being played for the Troops in Afghanistan, dammit, they had 'America the Beautiful' sung by Every Person in the Armed Forces with a Singing Voice.

And they announced that 'America the Beautiful' and the 'Star Spangled Banner' were going to be 'signed' by Marlee Matlin. (Why have just one National Anthem when you can have two?) And there's Marlee, the most beautiful deaf person in the world, apparently, because she's the go-to gal for these sort of things.

But instead of putting Marlee in the 'sign-language box' which is what they do for speeches and such, you never saw her from the front again. Saw her from the side, and back, and just in brief glimpses because they had to show Every Person in the Armed Forces with a Singing Voice. After which we had to focus on Lady Gaga (no complaint about her, she did a good job and her dress was meatless).

Of course, signing is useless if you can't see the person directly. So who was Marlee signing to exactly? A person or two in the stadium who could see her on one sideline?

A small point that got drowned out by the Blue Angels flying overhead in bone-rattling fashion, so that everyone is reminded that we're Keeping the World Safe for Stunt Flying. Marlee probably didn't flinch.
